Raph: you know, it’s funny, I read some Star Wars books when they had their last major line revamp, said, “Hey, this isn’t bad,” and then never really went back.
I used to hate New Year’s Eve, just hate it… but the last few years the right people have been throwing the right parties and I find myself really looking forward to it. Like with most things, it’s really all about who you’re with.
I say yay to New Years Eve’s Parties, but alas, I’ve been an account for the last 15 years and usually have to work that day as it’s the last day of the year. This year is no exception. The wife and I usually just celebrate it some other time, like in April.

On a completely unrelated note, decided to try again and read Preacher. Managed to almost make it through it this time. Garth Ennis is one sick dewd. I should be able to finish it up in the next couple of days, but wow. I think all of Preacher in roughly seven days is about all of the twisted I can take. I’m going to have read something really wholesome after this.

A hedge knight is one who has no lord and moves from place to place, usually sleeping under hedges. The story in question is based on a short story by George R. R. Martin and is set in the world of his fantasy epic “A Song of Ice and Fire.” I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a well-written, complex, and engaging story that never fails to surprise and satisfy. Don’t be dismayed by the fantasy genre, this is truly an excellent read.

I read the synopsis of ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #37 and have never felt so glad to have dropped a book. I thought the whole purpose of doing the Ultimate line was to make the world more realistic and relatable. Now they’re on slave planet Pyx? And introducing Ultimate Thanos? Yeah, I can relate to that.
Also, I’m loving JUSTICE, but I agree that it comes out so rarely, the story loses momentum.
My wife and I are having a quiet New Year’s with a couple friends, although I do also enjoy a good party.

How much is DC screwing up if almost none of us is buying a title called Superman/Batman? I should LOVE that book, but it has been crap since at least the first Supergirl arc.
Those of you buying the Boys… worth consideration in ordering the trade? I’m not a HUGE Ennis fan (I’m in the middle of Preacher now and love it, but other than that I only like Hitman), but I love Darrick Robertson from Transmetropolitan.

I’ve got this thing working where odd numbered years it’s a yay for parties, and even numbered is nay. So this year we’re laying low – and since they just moved the Bears game to primetime, we’ll prolly eat too much while we watch it. Yay.

I like it, but I really like Ennis a lot. Many people will disagree with me. A lot of people are put off by the amount of graphic language and sex. It doesn’t bother me. Sometimes a book needs a good orgy with superheroes and prostitutes

Why am I (and Josh, I guess, from his podcast comments) the only one that loves this book? I don’t get it. I look forward to it, as the characterizations seem dead on. They remind me of my childhood, but it at the same time seem quite modern. Ah well, to each their own.
I guess I’m not crazy about Benes, but I don’t think he’s terrible. It does the job.
Fred – you so sold me on a Boys trade. You love Ennis that much? I am enjoying Preacher to no end, but the “Welcome Back Frank” story in Punisher didn’t work for me. I had an Enemy Ace book I thought was so-so, too.

The last batch of What If? comics has sucked pretty badly, so I’m kinda wary, but I’ll flip through ’em and see if they’re worthwhile.

The Ennis of The Boys is similar to the Ennis of Preacher.
Now before I get my ration of shit….
I mean it’s stylistically more similar to Preacher than say his Punisher work. That’s not to say it’s as good as Preacher. It isn’t yet. It may well be ultimately though as Preacher kind of built until it was as it was.
The initial problems that it has had finding an audience relate to Ennis and Robertson running around town saying that it would ‘out-Preacher Preacher’ which was a astonishingly retarded thing to do because Preacher is a beloved book to many people and they kind of set themselves up for failure.
BTW – Read Project X Challengers: Cup Noodle (got it for it for x-mas, hehe), and it did indeed rock. Being the first manga I’ve ever read, though, made it difficult for a little bit. REALLY looking forward to 7-11.
Dustin, you and Josh are not alone in your views on the new JLA. I’m really enjoying it and based on the comments from the group here I’ve also been slowly working my way through the Morrison JLA in trade and it’s really good.
Also, if you like Preacher, you should enjoy the Boys. I was only able to get through Preacher after having been desinsitised by reading the Boys.
DarrOn, I also recently read the Project X book and it was great. The only problem I had, other than finding it, was getting used to reading from right to left.

Scott – enjoy the Morrison JLA trades. If you like that Morrison, try Animal Man and the current All-Star Superman book. He’s dialed into the DCU much more than any of his Marvel work.

I read the first 3 issues of the Boys before I ever read Preacher so I was hooked because of the shock value, then there was a little bit too much shit in it (Superhero orgy) but after the last issue I’m sure that this book will take off now, the only thing thats missing is some action and I we’re gonna get it on this issue, I dont think The Boys will be the POW but I think it shoulg get Ron and Connor and all of you who have stoped reading the comic to give it a shot.

Still don’t know if i’m picking up Ultimate Power #3 or not, the last two issues haven’t exactly impressed me much.
Dustin, I’m already reading All Star Superman and you’re right, Morrison is really dialed in.
On Antman, are you referring to Morrison’s run or the current run by Kirkman?
AnIMAL Man, not Ant-Man. Animal Man is an obscure DC super-hero that Morrison did a ground-breaking 26 issue run on in the late 80s. It’s collected in 3 trades. For me, it’s quintessential Morrison: crazy ideas, meta-commentary about writing and the medium, but at the same time has a ton of heart (heart that is lacking in books like The Filth and, arguably, X-Men).
As for Ant-Man, can’t say. I’m the one guy that doesn’t get the Kirkman bit. There is always one guy that everyone loves that I don’t see the big deal about. I’m also that way with Will Farrell.
Astonishly Retarded is actually a new ongoing from Chris Claremont and Rob Liefeld. It’s about the alternate-dimension love children of Cable and Domino. Issue #1, which is part 1 of 3 of an arc called Cap’s Tits goes on sale in February. Look for the special 1:75 Michael Turner sketch variant. Issues 2-7 will feature variant covers by the artists soon to be known as the Young Guns Retarded(Stefano Caselli,Yanick Paquette,Humberto Ramos,Pablo Raimondi,Mark Texeira and Chris Bachalo).

Old School was good but I don’t know I’m just not really that into him, or at least nowhere near as much as everyone seems to be.

I used to hate Will Ferrell, I think mostly because that wasn’t MY SNL he was on. And the cheerleader sketches were awful. The he did the bits in Austin Powers, and I laughed, and then he did Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and I laughed at him. But then Old School owned me entirely. “Big Cat.”
And of course, if you listen to the show, about every other sentence out of my mouth has some Ron Burgundy inflection, because I think it’s ridiculously funny.

Not to say he’s ALWAYS funny. I didn’t really like Talladega Nights all that much.
I thought the first 20 or so minutes of Talladega Nights was pretty good, but it kind of goes downhill after he has his accident. Loved his kids Walker and Texas Ranger. They stole the show.

Old School = funnest movie of the past 10 years, IMO. I LOVE me so Anchorman (HEY-OH!!!!!) but Old School is just tits.
that slow talking bit from the trailer was the only thing that convinced me to go see it. I thought I would hate that movie when I saw the poster. So not the case.
Oh god, that’s still just as funny, years later. But you’re right. I think it is a classic already.

Oh and Elf was pretty funny too
