Pick of the Week #121 – Zorro #1

Show Notes

We’re in San Francisco for WonderCon, and we’re talking comic books — no emails or voicemails. Just comic books.

Running Time: 00:54:44

(Thanks to g0ofgnewt for covering the show notes for us!)

Pick of the Week:
00:02:20 – Conor had a tough month with his books. The best of the stack for the resident Batman fan was Zorro#1 by Dynamite Entertainment. Problems ensue with Street Fighter characters

Comics:
00:12:13 – Sergio Aragones takes over The Spirit and the boys find it difficult not to compare to Cooke’s.
00:15:21 – There is a bittersweet reaction to Checkmate #25. Josh feels like a jilted lover.
00:18:42 – Batman Confidential #13 starts a new story arc and had Conor questioning continuity.
00:20:52 – The Mighty Avengers cracked Ron up.
00:24:46 – Superman/Batman #46 has some trippy connotations for Supes.
00:27:56 – Poster child for the worst comics revealed! The Flash #237 which has a guest creative team but with the same problems.
00:31:18 – Ron tries to talk Invincible #48 without being accosted in a hotel. Continuity freaks unite around this issue. The entire Image universe turns up in issue. Awesomeness is around the corner with #50.
00:32:58 – Clint B. gets rectified with the boys talking about (Red) Hulk #2. Get your insurance as car wreaks may nearer than you think. And who is Maria Hill?
00:37:32 – Josh likes Ultimate Human #2. He doesn’t know anything about this Hulk and it must be why he likes it.
00:39:07 – Justice League of America #18 was enjoyable this week. But the back up story was more enjoyable. And they ruin Disney for Gordon the Intern.
00:41:50 – Rumors abound around which ultimate book is on the chopping block. Ultimate X-Men may be it, in #91 see the X-Men get their asses handed to them and the whole Ultimate universe joins in.
00:44:57 – Image Comics is now publishing Perhapanaughts. Ron read the second annual and liked the mix of B.P.R.D. and Proof.
00:46:47 – Josh thumbed through Youngblood #2 and had a surprising result. Ron agreed that it was a good issue.

  1. Hey, Alan Alda’s back on the show! *cackle*

Bring on the Street Fighter video podcast.
    I’m not joking.

  2. Mike Carey is indeed still writing Ultimate Fantastic Four, but they just started the big return of Thanos arc which his entire run has basically been leading up to, so I don’t know how if he’s sticking around after that.

  4. Great show!

  5. Great, because I really needed "Maps" stuck in my head before I go to sleep.

  6. Great show guys, despite being tired.

What was it with the super-action double-page spreads this month at Marvel?  4 in New Avengers, 3 in Hulk, then 1 each in Runaways, Iron Man and Ultimates 3.  Am I just noticing them more because of New Avengers?  And most of these had no dialog.  I feel like I’m paying for poster books sometimes.

  7. On pipeline this week Augie mentioned the controversial ridiculousness of Mighty Avengers, so I knew something was coming. When I saw the second double page spread I groaned. The Art was great, but I was so mad about the 6 pages that I flipped through the rest of the issue, and had to go back like 2 hours later to finish it.

  8. @g0ofgnewt, thanks for the show notes!

  9. Aww no Mention of Cable & Deadpool #50..  That was a great run.

  10. Great show, as per usual — particularly good points about Ultimate X-Men.  Ironically, the X-men probably could have benefited the most from the ‘ultimate’-verse reinvention, but they got off on the wrong foot with Millar, IMHO — too many characters, starting too late in the story — and since he left, the subsequent, universally talented, writing teams have been on a salvage operation.   I’ve probably read a longer continuous run on this title than anything else Marvel is still putting out; there have always been just enough interesting points to keep me coming back.  But particularly since the end of the Cable arc, and the attempt at making an all-new, all-different team, this title has been completely unfocused.

It definitely seems like the prime contender for cancellation, though do wonder what is going to happen next.  I can’t imagine they are going to get rid of all of these characters.  Ultimate X-Force, maybe?  Ultimate Wolverine, with guest appearances from whoever they feel like?  I’d read an Ultimate Phoenix book with Jean Grey as the main character, but I don’t see that happening.

  11. Okay, so were the jokes about replacing Josh with Tom Katers foreshadowing something?  Now that Around Comics is on an indefinite hiatus…I’m just sayin’, Josh–watch your back.

Just kidding.  Another great show.  You make my Monday drive to work not just tolerable, but enjoyable.

Oh, and follow me on Twitter, dangit!   I need friends!

  12. Who chose to play the new Bob Mould as your intro/outro music?  Bravo!

I must confess that I didn’t start listening him until WAY after Husker Du, but I think he’s great.  Friday is payday, which means I’m getting the new album.

  13. Great show and I have to agree The Flash blows.  I am still really upset that they killed Bart after making that book so good.  I dropped that book pretty quickly when Waid came back.

It’s dissapointing to me how many flagship books from Marvel or DC just suck overall.  Can’t Stand Batman, Wonder Woman, Amazing Spiderman, Most of marvel in general, and JLA (which I wish they would just let McDuffie write).  Action Comics is the first time I’ve been excited about Superman in a while and that’s mostly because I’ve read a lot of the old school Legion stuff.

  14. I’m suprised no one read michael green’s run on Batman Confidential.  It started out kind of slow, but ended up being, in my opinion, a great joker origin with some intruiging art by denys cowan and john floyd and excellent writting to boot!  If you liked Green’s superman/batman story at all give this one a shot!

I’m pretty new to your podcast and really enjoy it thanks for putting it together.
