100,000 years before the time of John Carter! Barsoom is a dying world: its once mighty oceans are receding and its atmosphere grows more tenuous by the day. The Orovars, who have dominated for a million years, are on the verge of extinction at the hands of the Green Hordes and the emerging Red Martians. 1. I’ve been getting WoM and WoM: Dejah Thoris, so I guess I’ll try this too. With Marvel doing a series this fall, and a major movie coming out next year, I guess John Carter is finally getting his due.

  2. My only complaint about this book is the weird mix of styles regarding clothing and technology. Most of the characters in the book, no matter what race, are shown wearing typical Barsoomian attire and armed with swords and firearms like the other Mars books. However, our main scientist character is dressed like some modern anime character, wearing a scuba tank and driving a jeep. That just didn’t seem to mesh well together for me.

Otherwise, this sets up a good story. The art was really good. Loved the two-page spread of the green martian army (best depiction of them since the old Marvel books). The pulpy Francavilla cover is a thing of beauty, and he’ll be doing alternate coveres for every issue of this series!

If you like Dynamite’s other Mars books, check this out. So far, I like it better than the Deja Thoris title.
