UNWRITTEN #17

Special guest artist Ryan Kelly provides finishes over Peter Gross’s art for “The Lives of Lizzie Hexam: A Choose-a-Story adventure.” Enter the mind of Lizzie Hexam, Tom Taylor’s fervent but enigmatic guardian, and explore the contradictory, impossible events that made her what she is. Is she a victim or champion? A madwoman or a saint? That’s for you and fate to decide as you pick the story’s path. The multiple Eisner-nominated series tells its most ambitious stand-alone story to date in an oversized, interactive issue!

  1. I am beyond excited for this!!

  2. I am really psyched for this issue as well. I loved reading Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid, and Unwritten has consistenly been a 5-star book for me every issue. Really good stuff.

  3. I love that cover and this format.  I’m really looking forward to this.

  4. Ryan Kelly finishes looked great in the preview

  5. Ryan Kelly?!  I didn’t even realize until now that he’s doing art on this!  I want to call pick of the week already but it’s only Monday! This will be the first book I read on Wednesday.

  6. This could be awesome or a silly gimick. Considering we are due for another mind-blowingly awesome book (we get one every 5-6 issues) my expectations are high.

  7. if this follows the format to date this issue will blow my sock off and be the reason i buy this book when i have my doubts at time

  8. glad i have this on my pull list cuz it’s likely to be sold out if you don’t.  Never read an interactive book.

  9. One of the few books I regret not pre-ordering from DCBS.  Hope I can find one at the shop in a few weeks.

On a side note, if anyone is looking for a terrific choose your own adventure comic, Jason Shiga’s "Meanwhile" from earlier this year is the best comic I’ve read all year.  Terrific fun!

  10. It’s books like this that make me wish I didn’t preorder from DCBS. The wait is going to slay me. My wallet and impatience are at odds. Money’s a cruel mistress.

  11. Oh man I haven’t anticipated a single issue of anything as much as this one in a long while.  I hope it lives up to the super high expectations, but Carey and Gross haven’t let me down yet.

  12. Could have easily been a let down, but what a fun issue!

  13. Excellent! Did you start over after you finished?
    I didn’t, but I will.

  14. @stuchlach I did of course I will be the first one to admit I read it wrong at first and was lost lol

  15. Hope you enjoyed it more the second time.

  16. I think there needs to be a 6th star just this once for this book.

  17. @stuchlach I did fortunately I caught before I got too far! All the different paths were fun

  18. I really enjoyed this story and the previous Unwritten story, but I did find this type of book more trouble than it was worth.  While I do think this was an interesting way to tell a story, I hope the next issue just tells the story from start to finish — instead of having me hold and read the book in a strange and unfamiliar way.
