  1. And the Cowardly Lion threw on some furry bellbottoms and hit the road to find himself. Beast is one of my favorite X-Men but they’ve really struggled to find a place for him since Morrison’s run (and even that was wonky.) THe Science Team was fun, but obviously that’s not going anywhere. That said… I’m curious to see where this goes after Utopia.

  2. "One of the original X-Men makes his exit! …CLASSIFIED…"

My guess, based on the cover…Iceman.

  3. While looking at that cover, White Snake’s "Here I Go Again" keeps playing in my head.  🙂

I’d like to think that they have plans for Beast, but I’m not sure how or why he would leave the science team that he started.  I can’t imagine that the scientist in him would allow him to abandon his goal because he is mad with Emma and Scott.  That’s pretty childish.  Have to wait and see I suppose.

  4. @drake THe thing that kills me is that in over 45 years of X-Men, this like the least devious thing Scott or Emma have done to better the team and Hank didn’t quit then. 😉

  5. @Prax-Seriously!!  Maybe all he really neededwas another call from The Avengers and he woulda jumped ship ages ago.

  6. Isn’t he going to shake up with Agent Brand for her spin off series?

  7. @Prax: I agree completely. It’s weird how the X-writers have been giving the characters selective memories lately. Cyclops bails on Xavier because of some questionable things he did in the past ("Y’know what, for no reason…right…NOW I’ve got a problem with you"), then sets up X-Force, which is worse than what Xavier was doing lately…But Cyke’s X-Force isn’t really as bad as Cable’s X-Force, which was a staunch aly of the X-Men through the ’90s. There must be some new mutant at work whose power is to disrupt everyone’s moral compass or something. Then throw in the fact that Emma did way worse things than Xavier and Cyclops combined, but everyone forgives her, even though–based on how Cyke was confused by how she acted during Utopia–he doesn’t really completely trust her to remain good, at all, but he still sleeps with her. At least in the past, when the X-Men accepted Magneto into the fold in the ’80s, they did so while keeping full in mind who the guy was, what his sins were. These days it’s like any given issue can bitterly demonize any X-character’s sins at the drop of a hat while pretty much ignoring everyone else’s.

All that said, yeah, I’m looking forward to this issue. 😀

  8. I have serious problems with paying for a Greg Land comic, but considering how perfect the direction of the x-verse has been lately… I just can’t help it.

  9. damnit I was really hoping Land wasn’t coming back :-

  10. I am buying this and if I don’t like the direction I think I am done with Uncanny.

  11. Spoilers deleted.

  12. @flapjaxx-When was Scott confused by Emma’s actions in Utopia?  They were working together the whole time.

Either way, I always thought it was stupid to shun Xavier.  Especially when he got his powers back.  That is someone you want on your team, at least for strategic reasons.  Scottie should be smart enough to know that.

  13. I’d say it’s possible Charles Xavier, at the moment, is the only person whose powers and strategic value can not eclipse personal differences to Scott.  From the X-Men Legacy annual last week, it looks like he’s hanging around though.

unless I’m mistaken, it’s still the secret team that was sent to Krakoa and disappearing after House of M that Cyclops is holding against him.

  14. @zeppo

I’m glad I’m not the only one who can recognize Iceman in his Beast costume.

  15. Greg Land = pass.  Greg Land drawing Beast = pass with extreme prejudice.

  16. Inter-species erotica.

  17. Did this comic come with a CD with the "Bruce Banner Sadly Leaving Town Piano Theme" from the old TV series on it? Because that’s exactly what I’m hearing while looking at this cover.

  18. This was actually quite good. I was determined to give it a 1/5, knowing in advance how much I would hate the Greg Land "art."  And I did hate the "art" that much– the poses drove me crazy as usual, and the characters’ "acting" was laughably bad.

BUT, Matt Fraction wrote the hell out of this issue.  It was actually terrific, despite the art.

  19. OK Land, you win this round; I’ll end my boycott of your comics for now…

  20. I couldn’t tell who the chick in black was in the first few pages.  I could have sworn it was the girl from the Sisterhood a few arcs back.  Damn you Land for your confusion.

A decent issue.   Same complaints about the art, but overall the story was only somewhat good.  I don’t like the idea of now Scott all of a sudden being completely lost.  He has been ahead of the game so far and the Fraction could have put more thought and care into his reasoning for being shaky now.  Still, it was entertaining.

  21. Wow… I was actually really up on Utopia despite the flaws. This issue… wow. I want to preface this by saying Cyclops is one of my favorite X-Men. The original team of X-Factor from 86 through 91 is one of my favorite runs in comics. That said…

If I didn’t know any better, after reading this issue I would assume that 1) Cyclops has never lead the X-Men before now. 2) Cyclops is an 18 year old leading a group of people significantly older than him. 3) Cyclops is a terrible leader and everyone on the team feels the need to let him now this all the time. This is a man who has been in charge of the X-Men, on-and-off since (Uncanny) X-Men #23. He doesn’t have a plan?!?! The man has come up with more complex plans for beating Arcade and I’m supposed to believe this character is now ineffective. Sigh. It’s really hard for me to reconcile Fraction’s spot-on writing on Iron Man with the hit-or-miss writing on this series. I’m intrigued by the last page, though. 2/5 for me. And I didn’t think Land’s art was as bad as here.

  22. I thought this issue was pretty good, especially the end.

  23. @Prax-Yeah, that whole time Scott was talking, I just kept shaking my head.  It’s just so off.  He had this whole plan to bring up Astroid M…but then had no plan for what to do after that?  Bull

  24. Seriously "he" comes back? Really? … I swear to god I saw this coming but not this soon. I think Fraction’s finally rushing, it’s really too soon for "that" appearance.

  25. I thought this issue of Uncanny was the best in many months. Probably my favorite since sometime before the Sisterhood arc. A lot of plot-points of various characters were moved forward…and Mags is back.

  26. @Magnaman-Well…the cover for the next issue has been out for months now.  Plus he appeared in #500.  Plus Fraction has been talking about his return since the beginning of Utopia at least, and he specifically pointed to #516 as his "return".

  27. I’ve no idea what that cover (or that synopsis) has to do with anything, but the actual issue was good. I really dig all-talking issues sometimes. 🙂

  28. …and it was my POW because it was the only book where I remembered *everything* from the previous issues. I never once had a WTF moment.

  29. @PraxJarvin Don’t you think the reason Scott’s acting weird’s because its the first time no one’s messing with his head? With Emma in Diamond form, Xavier’s problems and Jean… gone!?! I think that’s what Fraction’s trying to write into Scott. What do you think?

  30. Or maybe someone new is messing with his head???

  31. @rockingeek I have to be honest, that really never crossed my mind and it seems a bit ridiculous. There have been times with  Scott leading the team, effectively, with none of the telepaths around (and both Jean and Xavier dead or off-planet on more than one occasion). It seems really weird to me to suddenly go "Oh, you know what, he was lied to a lot by Xavier." That’s essentially the argument that was being thrown around in Ultimate X-Men before I stopped reading that. I mean, it could come off really well and I could be eating my hat, but I really just don’t get where this is coming from. I’m waiting for him to be killed off-screen and done away with like in the X-Men films.

  32. @PraxJarvin I didn’t read everything X-men(Before Morrison’s run, I’m pretty much clueless) so I can’t talk for all the stories ever told, I’m just trying to understand why Scott’s so different.

I’m sure the Cuckoos are behind this. Those girls freaks me out.

  33. So I know that the pic above is the wrong cover, but is it the wrong synopsis too?  It doesn’t actually connect to the events of the book?!  I’m confused.  Is the info above for 516?

  34. @rockingeek-It doesn’t make any sense that Scott is acting that way because of a psychic character.

  35. @drake Why?

  36. @rockingeek-because there is nothing at all to base that on and it sounds ridiculous.  And Prax already pointed out that he has already been shown to be an effective leader without the presence of a psychic character around.

  37. @drake So you have no idea why and you’re not making any sense.

I was messing around asking a question to Prax and trying to understand why Scott’s acting like he never led the X-men before.

But I know the real anwser to that: Fraction suck at writing the X-men.

  38. You are really weird

  39. I know!

  40. What did I miss? Why is Emma suddenly always in diamond form, and what’s the lil squiggly thing on her forehead?

  41. @Whitespyder I believe both those questions are answered – however brusquely – in the issue, but anyway… Emma fought the Sentry and tapped into his mind, making him fly off into space to cry. However, part of the Void – the Sentry’s Id – lashed out at her and started to attack her mind. She immediately shifts into diamond form and traps a tiny bit of the Void in her diamond casing/shell/skin, manifesting itself as the squiggle on her head.

  42. I really like this issue.  the basic premise was this very minor character died and they held the funeral.  but look at how much more story was being told in and around that very basic plot. plus, Danger is in charge of the X-villains, who were that villain team in the beginning.  what happens when Emma finally does let the Void out??? and all of that is sub-plot, as clearly the driving element for the next few issues is Magneto’s return.  this is good X-Men comics here.

  43. My favorite part of this book was when Beast put that backpack on and made a dramatic exit.  Wait, what?

Does anyone know what the "Nation X" branding means?  I’d just assume it was this arc of Uncanny, but I saw one of the passport-style Nation X ads referencing an upcoming issue of Deadpool.  Is this a mini-event or something?

  44. Loved it, hated the art.

  45. Inconsistent writing. The stuff with Scott unsure and Emma bitching seemed really oddly out of character. Scene of Scott and Xavier was amazing. "It will be all right in the end." "This is far from all right." "Then I guess this isn’t the end." To paraphrase. I just hope Danger picks up on Pierce’s nonsense, as I just hate that guy.
