   I’d like to give Savage Dragon a try, I’ve heard some pretty good stuff about this. Whats a good starting point? Should I try to pick up the archives, or is there a recent jumping-on ish that would be a good start point?

    Larsen is planning on making #145 a good place to jump on.  Savage Dragon is a really fun comic, and I’d really recommend looking into it around that time rather than now, since he’s wrapping up some long running stories at the moment.
