Make that 2 people now. I didn’t buy the first batch of Marvel Classics (might pick up one or two of the HCs) but I have been picking up the recent ones. I haven’t read through my issues of The Illiad yet (life and a contract job keep interrupting, perhaps over coffee tomorrow), but so far The Picture of Dorian Gray mini is good, and I really liked the first issue in the Moby Dick series. Roy Thomas as an old school comic writer knows how to pack a lot of story into one issue, so each is a solid adaptation of the original, although some of the major themes, sub-texts, allusions, etc do get glossed over (obviously). If you’re looking for an analogy–imagine some poor English major (easy, as I’m a former one myself) taking a mid-term having read only the Marvel Classic adaptation, I’d wager he/she would probably do pretty well on the multiple-choice section but flounder on the essay portion.
As a side note, there’s a really great Classics Illustrated version of Moby Dick from the early 90s with mind-blowing art by Bill Sienkiewicz–it’s easily one of my all-time favorite one-shot books.
I see one person pulled this. Are they any good?
