GODZILLA KINGDOM OF MONSTERS #1

The King of the Monsters rises again, and for the first time in comics, he’s bringing lots of other beloved Toho monsters with him in one destructive saga, and The Goon’s Eric Powell is sounding the alarm. Powell will also paint covers for each issue of this new ongoing series, including a wraparound cover to kick things off! Acclaimed artist Phil Hester signs on for the first storyline, and Alex Ross supplies a painted 50/50 variant cover! This is the Big G storyline you’ve been waiting for!

  1. GAAAAAAAAAAAH I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS I CAN’T EVEN TELL YOU GUYS!!! XD

LOL THE BIG G’S DARK HORSE BOOKS FROM THE LATE 80’S AND 90’S ARE A HUGE PART OF THE REASON I’M A BIG COMIC BOOK GUY TODAY, AND THE GREAT BUZZ I’VE BEEN HEARING REGARDING THIS FIRST SERIES HAS GOT ME SUPER-EXCITED!!! XD

ERIC POWELL ON SCRIPT, WITH PHIL HESTER ON ART, DRAWING GIANT KAIJU AWESOMENESS???!!!
    I’M THERE!!! ^^ 😀

    XD GODZILLA FTW!!! ^^

  2. Wow, with the all caps it was like I was in a Manga Monster movie.

Also, that is a big, big eyeball.

  3. LOL Yeah I agree; that’s a pretty humongous eye, even by Godzilla standards XD

BUT YOU KNOW, MY ALL-CAPS TEXT SURE DOES SEEM TO FIT THE COMICS’ SUBJECT MATTER WELL, DON’T YOU THINK? XD

And although this isn’t a Japanese comic book, I guess in a way we are getting our own “Manga Monster movie” with this series in that it’s something akin to a “Monster Movie in Manga-form”, despite the fact that it’s created by Americans and is set to be published here in the United States. “Manga” is just the Japanese word for comic book, and outside of Japan, it’s usually the term used to denote comics published originally in Japan. 🙂

  4. Anyone else’s LCS crazyy enough to order enough copies to get their own cover?

  5. @DarthDuck  my store did. It’s fun and I am buying it just for the cover, but I’m sure I’ll enjoy the story. I really can’t wait for it.

  6. @DarthDuck: My LCS did and it is actually pretty well done.

    Here is a pic : http://www.collectorscornermd.com/blog/godzilla-king-of-monsters

  7. My only $4 book but I have been a Godzilla fan since I was 6 or 7 years old so I have no choice.  I hope it is much better than those Dark Horse Godzilla comics from back in the mid 1990s!!  Those were the reason I LEFT comics and didn’t come back for 15 years.

  8. I’M DOWN TOO!!!

My mom used to punish me when I was bad by not letting me watch the Godzilla movies on TV when I was a kid, that was pure torture.

  9. This and the Planet of the Apes series from Boom have me equally excited… hope they both rock.

  10. I’ma buy it. Read it.  Bag it.  Sleep with it.  Feed it breakfast.  Dress it up.  Tell it how pretty it looks…

I can’t wait for this book.  I’ma love it.  ::looove it::

  11. @WoodenSpoonVersusShiv:

LOL Amen, manh!!! 😀 I know how you feel!
I hope you enjoyed it! 😀 I thought it was a pretty fun read 😀 Well worth the wait, if you ask me

  12. Was great to see Phil Hester’s work again, and was like pleasantly shocked to see him chomping on children and stomping on old women, but I thought the story shoulda been more of a return of Godzilla rather than his introduction to Tokyo.  Monster Island is like a Japanese tradition, thought it woulda been better if they continued that in this.

  13. That last panel = panel of the week.

  14. Mixed feelings about this … the story was perhaps an interesting opening scene, but it certainly wasn’t memorable in any way. The art was competent, but felt too cartoonish to me. I wonder how this book would have felt with grittier artwork.

  15. This issue was too damned short!  Now I hafta wait another month to get more?  Unacceptable!

Also, I am super-stoked for Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliaths.  Love that Darrow promo artwork!

  16. hester should have wrote this and powell should have drawd it….

  17. “Are you $&@#ing kidding me?” The joke is on me I guess. This book was terrible. Granted I’ve not read a lot of Goon, but I was under the impression that Eric Powell was good. I liked the Phil Hester art, but this book was just bad.

  18. I’m so much more excited for the Planet of the Apes book having read this. I too thought it pretty much stunk. The Planet of the Apes concept has far more potential.

  19. Problem with a Giant Monster comic book today. The artist is compelled to fill it with one and two page spreads of giant monsters. That in itself is not a bad thing, but it means we get about 5-10 seconds of story per issue. I will wait and see it the collected trade is any fun. Issue by issue will just drive me crazy.
