  1. I’m giving this a shot. Seriously ONE shot, if I don’t like it and I continue buying it, someone here please smack me and set me straight

  2. @deezer: I’m in the same boat. I’ve loved Checkmate this far, but Jones scares the crap out of me. I keep having flashbacks to his Nightwing run…..it’ll be a damn shame if I have to drop this because of him.

  3. I’m giving it a few issues, I don’t think 1 is enough. The guy’s building a new arc so we can’t expect thunderbolts straight away. I say give him a chance to put his mark on the series. Of course if that mark sucks then I’m dropping it, but give it a chance people. 🙂

  4. I accidentally clicked the ‘Pull’ button, then had to go and remove it.  I’ve been so used to clicking ‘Pull’ for Checkmate, that it almost slipped-by me this time.

  5. Bruce Jones?  Damn….just damn.

    Pass.

  6. I’m giving it a chance, but like everyone else I fear the worst……

  7. I think I’m sitting this one out.  I can’t imagine the sales justifying keeping this one going after Rucka leaves.  A clean break is what’s called for.

If I heard good things after the fact, I may pick it up on ebay…but I’ve been burned one time too many with Bruce Jones.  Although, this sounds like in theory it should be a good fit for him, so I’m torn.

  9. What did Bruce Jones do to scare everybody so much?  The only thing that I really know him from is his run on Hulk, and I remember enjoying that.

  10. His run on The Incredible Hulk started out great, but pretty soon meandered so much with only the briefest glimpses of the Hulk to whet one’s appetite while trying to sort out just what the point of his whole run was.  He also took over Nightwing OYL and, while I didn’t read past the first issue, got pretty dismal reviews across the board.  Likewise his relaunch of Warlord really missed the mark according to the few people I’ve talked to who were actually fans of the original series.

  11. @Kwertee

Jones had a horrid run on Nightwing OYL, I suffered through it just for my love of Nightwing. And then everything TomO said.

That being said, this issue wasn’t horrible, but not great either. Didn’t really feel like a "Checkmate" issue, but I suppose I’ll give another ish or two to see where hes going with Chimera. Its an semi-interesting concept.

  12.  I’m getting much stricter with the books on my pull list nowadays. I will give this 1-2 issues to see if it pans out. Ntpmcrtp is right, something about the issue felt "off".

  13. I read 1-25 last month and it was like a big, complete book of goodness.  This simply did not feel like Checkmate.
