CASANOVA: AVARITIA #4 (OF 4)

One of the most critically acclaimed series of the year comes to its catastrophic conclusion. CASANOVA: AVARITIA #4 answers every question (almost), solves every riddle (kind of), and explains absolutely everything you ever wanted to know about the world of CASANOVA (in a way). Casanova Quinn, hated on all sides by tyrant and hero alike, must flee from time and space, aim one batch of enemies at the other, kill everybody and save everything simultaneously. Don’t be afraid: you are an apocalypse dreaming of butterflies + the first part of reincarnation is dying…

By the Eisner-laden team of MATT FRACTION (AvX, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN, THE MIGHTY THOR, FEAR ITSELF) and GABRIEL BÁ (UMBRELLA ACADEMY, DAYTRIPPER).

  1. Honestly I have so lost track of where this story is going or coming from this could be almost anything and I wouldn’t know if it actually wrapped up the series. This book has been fun in a “just let it wash over you” kind of way.

    • I’m in the same boat. I’ve been just enjoying the experience with each issue, which — given the delays — was probably the smart approach. It’s been a fun read in that manner, hopefully it stays that way when I read the whole thing.

    • Yeah once I’ve read this I’ll probably go back and read all of Casanova start to finish to see if it actually makes sense!

Is this the final issue to wrap everything up or is Fraction planning more minis?

    • I’ve re-read the issues, and other times skimmed them over, again a few times. There’s a solid story at the core, but yeah, this ending could go any which way. And I have a feeling those “negative exposure” panels with the strange narration are gonna mean something. At least, I hope so – cuz I can’t make heads or tails of ’em.

@USPUNX, I’m pretty sure there will be more… Fraction’s previously talked about Moon doing art on the next arc – & while it’s been forever since he first started the series, in the beginning he said it was meant to be 7 arcs total (one for each of the deadly sins). Fraction did say in a recent WordBalloon interview that this was the end of what he sees as a 3 act story – so they could feasibly call it quits after this, but I haven’t heard anything to that extent.

    • @jason: I didn’t know he planned one volume for each deadly sin. That’s cool. So if you’re a bit forgiving with the Spanish/Portuguese spellings you have:

      Vol 1: Luxuria (lust)
      Vol 2: Gula (gluttony)
      Vol 3: Avaritia (avarice/greed)

So I wonder what’s next — sloth, pride, envy, or wrath?

    • @KenOchalek Yeah, I wondered that too. It doesn’t seem like the titles are too directly tied to the plots (unless I’m just missing it). I’d be okay with 4 more volumes of Cass though.

    • Interesting. I would definitely read more volmes of this, no question.

  2. This is a series I simply have to save up until its complete, it’s been a long old wait but what it does mean is effectively I have four issue to enjoy this weekend.

    Cant wait

  3. This is the first Fraction-written series I read, back with the original Casanova, and now the only one I still read. How can this be so continuously awesome and his other work so uneven?

    • Nobody’s perfect.

    • I dropped Iron Man about a year ago for budgetary reasons but up until then I thought his whole run wad really enjoyable.

    • Fraction plays the Long Game.

Plus, I think that Casanova is his Venture Bros., the satire of what he loved that became a thing in and of itself.

It’s kind of the song he’s best at singing, his own material.

But his Marvel stuff can really reward if you read it in large enough chunks.

Or at least it does for me.

  4. FInally got around to reading the whole volume last night. I totally dug it. Lots of fun action with some clever (but not “oh look how clever I am”) storytelling techniques. It’s been a while since I read volumes 1 and 2, but I think this might have been the most straight-forward and accessible volume to date. I’m down for another volume!
