BATMAN #705

Batman joins forces with a new hero who’s as dangerous as she is beautiful. When members of a secret order turn up dead and tortured in Gotham City’s Chinatown district, I-Ching informs Batman that he fears an ancient relic is the target. Batman connects this case to that of a missing satellite architect. With few clues to go by and the stakes getting higher, Batman races to locate the surviving members of the order before it’s too late.

  1. This makes me want to cry. Tony Daniel is writing one of the worst comics in the last ten years.

  2. Really? Wow. I’m just jumping on here.

  3. I don’t know. I’ve read way worse comics than the ones Daneil’s written AFTER Battle for the Cowl. It’s kind of bland at times, but I like that he tries to bring an ensemble cast in, and I quite like how he’s always changing his art style to try for different effects. He doesn’t always succeed–in fact, he might succeed only half of the time, and to a modest extent at that–but I appreciate what Daneil does. At least there’s an element of auteurism, a singular creative force behind the comic, which keeps things interesting. As much as people say they really like Batgirl or Red Robin–I just don’t care about those characters. At least with Daniel I can track one creator as he tries to grow, learn and change his style. That’s somewhat interesting to me, even if he’ll never become a great.

  4. I swear, when I picked up #704 it was like I just put down #699 mere moments ago. It was like Daniels didn’t even take a break in between!

I don’t get why everybody has such a big problem with Daniel’s writing.  I feel as if his stuff is pretty solid most of the time.  I have an easier time getting into stuff then some people though, always have.

  5. @froggulper
Interesting. If you want to write more about this, please do.

  6. I dont like how muscular daniels draws Batman. He looks like Ronnie Coleman for crying out loud. Yeah, no one would ever put together that a billionaire pro bodybuilder could be batman…

  7. So is this Bruce Wayne Batman or Dick Grayson Batman?

  8. @supertrackmonkey  – It’s Dick…

  9. @supertrackmonkey  Bruce has the yellow oval on his chest and the new Batman costume.

  10. I really have not found the Tony Daniel writing to be that bad. Is he Morrison? No, but neither are many other decent writers. Is this as crappy as Shadowland? Not by a long shot. I’m in for the foreseeable future.

  11. I will not drop the main Bat book nor Superman for that matter but I sure hope they get better soon. I have Action and Detective to
    hold me over.

  12. @dkpwv like it or not, the “main” Bat book is the one that says “Morrison” on the cover

  13. @FausticCaust: with “main” you mean quality, or flagship? Because I still believe this is the flagship book.

  14. @NathanNicdao I mean flagship. The one with Morrison on it is going to be the agenda setter, just because he’s the one with muscle, as far as editorial is concerned. For example, the status quo is upended w/ all this Incorporated stuff in a Morrison title, while Tony Daniels will never be allowed to drop a bomb like that here.

  15. I agree. Flagships can change with the talent. Look at Aston Martin, whos flagship used to be the Vanquish, now it’s the DBS. Not to mention Bruce is the main character in Inc. He started it all.

  16. Dear lord was this bad. Between the painful diologue and incomprehensible plot, along with yet another villain having a brand new teenage sidekick, the writting is plumbing a pit of awfulness not seen since Chuck Austen assaulted X-Men fans with ‘The Draco’ story line. And the art was sloppy and boring. I wish I could say I haven’t read a comic this bad in years, but sadly I also bought Jurassic Park: Redemption. It’s amazing how two of the worst runs I’ve ever read in my ten years of being a comic fan were in 2010, and sadly this crap sandwich shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

  17. Okay, I’ve definitely given this junk enough damn chances to pick up steam!!  Instead of getting better, it just went off and got three times worse!!  I don’t even feel like writing a review because I won’t be able to think of anything to say but, “what a waste of $!!?!!” (I kinda like writing reviews about titles I enjoyed much more)…

This is so dropped until somebody else picks it up.  I love Daniels on art, but his stories are just so f#*king DULL!!  I almost wasn’t able to finish this issue either.  That would be the second issue I bought this week that I couldn’t even finish reading  (GL/Plastic Man: Weapons Of Mass Desruction)

  18. I guess I am the only one here who likes the story and the art. I have always been a fan of Tony Daniel. I can understand how everyone else doesn’t like him, but his comics work for me. I am just puting it out there.

  19. The writing on this was laughably bad (literally for me).

After a year of no (real) Batman comics, Bruce Wayne finally comes back & this is what DC is serving up in the main Batman book?

With all the actual writers out there, why are they letting an artist write (very poorly) one of the biggest titles in all of comics? It makes no sense to me.

  20. @FausticCaust I’m grabbing anything with Morrison but I am having a hard time with the direction of this title. Riding the storm out until it Bruce is back as THE Batman…it’s going to happen eventually after all this Inc. nonsense blows over.

  21. I thought this was actually good. The art is solid, but Daniel tends to overwrite the narrations and the dialogues. Not as crisp, just enough.

I think Alfred was a bit out of character with his dialogue.

  22. @dkpwv  “Riding the storm out until it Bruce is back as THE Batman” <– I’ve been doing this for a year! lol & now we have longer to wait … & I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks Batman INC is a terrible idea 🙂

  23. @WadeWilson: It’s so Tony Stark for me.

  24. C-3PO writin Batman?????

  25. So what’s up with the Riddler? Is he a bad guy or what?
