  1. anyone heard of these artists?

    • Hadn’t heard of them before. I saw some preview art and it looked quite good. A little too pretty maybe….

    • Timothy Green II did art on Swamp Thing during Dysarts run, also Annihilators for Marvel & the odd Iron Fist issue with Swierczynski!
      Silver don’t know him!

  2. I’ve been reading this every issue digital, but I love it so much I picked up the trade.

Really excited for this annual, kicking off the Rotworld/Deadworld crossover. I’ve not read Swamp Thing but I know Lemire and Snyder will deliver.

    • Dude, start reading Swamp Thing. The reveal in 7 or 8 is well worth it. It’s one of my favorite floppies right now.

  3. I like the way they are handling this so far. Plus It’s cool to have a crossover for two great books that I already read.

  4. Feels like they have been taking about this cross-over for ever. Should be good

    • It seems like Animal Man is just waiting for the current Swamp Thing arc to finish. It was an interesting change when they made Maxine the avatar of the Red and Buddy just her protector but that was what? Issue 2? They’ve just been spinning the wheels since. Lemire really should have just had Buddy kill one of the Hunters 3, had the other 2 vow revenge and run away, then moved on to another storyline for 4 or 5 issues.

    • this story line is really starting to wear on me, it was no more evident than with this annual. Even “Sweet Tooth” seems to contain very little story content from issue to issue. I really like Jeff Lemire but please finish this by #12. I miss the original artist for Animal Man also, it was quite unique.

    • yep way too long

    • Lemire is all about atmosphere and terrible with plot. When he does do plot, it’s Quintin Tarantino-esque homages to other people’s work. Seriously, he used the storyline from Apocalypse Now twice in less than 6 months. Really overrated writer. They keep giving him my favorite characters though.

  5. I can nor wait to see some more Timothy Green II art!

  6. I wondered who would win my Potw nod, with Animal Man and Batman facing off this week. I loved Batman but had to give Animal Man the win. It was very reminisant of an issue of Lemire’s Superboy run. This was a lot of fun. I got very worried for the main character when the hunters 2 appeared, so who becomes the third?

  7. finally the green will meet the red.

  8. A good annual (and i love that lemire set it in manitoba) but it did feel very straight ahead, wish there had been a surprise somewhere along the way.

  9. While I really enjoyed this read, I had to give Batman my POTW. This was a nice sort of “flashback” story that reminded me of the sort of annuals I remember reading as a kid, but Batman seemed to have a bit more weight to it that pushed that titles story forward. This is easily my number 2 pick this week.

  10. Haven’t read Batman yet so waiting to give my PotW (American Vampire was great too, btw) but this was fantastic. Just the kind of book I want to read. And I couldn’t be more excited for the War that’s coming.

I really loved the device of Socks telling Maxine the story behind everything, very nicely done. Also thought that the panel where the earth is destroyed with all the heroes dead was pretty powerful (silent graveyard panel was also great). All around great book and is a solid 5/5 for me and I can’t wait for more.

  11. I’m kind of tired about hearing about the Rot. I want to like it but something has to go down soon.

The new artist was really good though

  12. I did enjoy the book, but was a bit disappointed that it was all a flashback to a previous animal man and swamp thing (from the cover I was expecting the current books to collide in the annuals, but I guess that is coming up in the next few issues of the respective titles)- still, solid story that adds to the current runs on both books.

  13. This was great, the art was beautiful. The continuity geek in me wishes they would tie the rot into Nekron somehow, Is Death or Nekron related to the rot in any way? Not to distract from the story but maybe a little nod.

loving this and sweet tooth, I look forward to the underwater engineer too – how is the new Justice League Dark with Jeff Lemire?

    • The story seems less important/vital than the first 1-8 issues. Like there isn’t the fate of the world riding in the balance of success and failure.

I liked the lack of group cohesion and various characters in 1-8. So far it seems like it will be an adventure to find a magical source. Something that maybe an Uncharted game would have you do, not exactly something that the JLD would do. Does that make sense?

Plus, Shade the Changing Man isn’t present and I hate that. I love Shade and the art his abilities create. Instead we get a vampire and some girl/pawn of SHADE/new character I don’t care about yet.

I’m not sure if I’m losing stuff I care about. Stuff I really enjoyed in 1-8, but I know that Lemire will write a decent adventure. But 1-8 was a dark twisted journey, not just another adventure.

    • That “some girl/pawn of SHADE” (actually you mean pawn of ARGUS) is Black Orchid. As her name suggests, she’s a plant based superhero. She probably will play some role in the Green.

Additionally, the old Animal Man artist is now on Birds of Prey. At first that seemed kind of random but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Poison Ivy is also plant based. I wonder if that book will crossover with this storyline as well.

  14. Animal Man has been superb and Swamp Thing has been good…..BUT CAN WE JUST FUCKING GET ON WITH IT NOW…. SERIOUSLY!!

  15. Why did I purchase this mess?? I kept asking my self as I tried desperately to make it through this whole issue. Eventually, I ended up putting this down and then putting it away and never finished reading it and this was about only a quarter of the way thru. I have really grown tired of all of this rot, green and the rest as I have mentioned before several times. It is just getting so boring and the artwork really just looks like slop and I have become so anoyed by this title and Swampy that this is the last time I will purchase anything related to these two titles unless there are drastic changes. Gave this a 1 more like a 0 since I could not even finish this issue and I am officially done;

Animal Man you have been dropped and Swampy!!
