‘Young Justice’ – S02E14 – “Runaways”

Youn Justice_Runaways

As sad as it is that the show is ending, this season does kind of seem to be wrapping up the story, unlike with Green Lantern: The Animated Series.

Here’s how “Runaways” is described:

Nightwing tasks Blue Beetle with chasing down a group of potentially dangerous super-powered teenage runaways. But Blue Beetle is not the only one hunting them….

I look forward to your thoughts, opinions, gripes, live-blogging, etc.

  1. This show is fun and loved that teen heroes were the main characters but they made it clear they were part of a much bigger picture with the Justice League and always bringing in good cameos from the DCU canon. Really hate to see this one go and what is to become of DC Nation when it’s just the cg Batman cartoon? I know many animated series are short lived and on to the next audience but that’s not always the case and this one had the most potential to grow and expand with the generations of heroes element. They jumped the gun on canceling this one.

  2. Yeah, what JSAkid said.

But still excited for the remaining 7 episodes, and seeing this whole thing wrap up. It’s been an amazing season!

SO excited to see Apache Chief! Oh man…takes me back to some of my favorite Super Friends episodes.

    • Not just Apache Chief. All the teens were an homage to the “made for TV” Superfriends characters: Apache Chief, Samurai, El Dorado and Black Vulcan. I picked up on the Apache Chief reference immediately but had to wiki the others because I couldn’t remember their powers. Loved the updates to the powers by the way, Apache Chief’s growing updated to a giant astral projection with Samurai’s wind powers updated to cool energy rings. El Dorado’s teleportation is the same but they chose to include Static from “Static Shock” in the Black Vulcan pastiche. Overall…excellent episode from a series that will be missed.

    • Kind of. Virgil Hawkins is Static Shock.

    • Oops… missed your second to last last sentence.

    • Have any of these characters (Other than Static) appeared in the comics? I don’t know why, but I’ve liked Apache Chief since his first appearance when he was just Jaime’s angsty friend.

    • If you mean these teen versions, I don’t believe so. If you mean the originals, I think they may have popped up in the old Superfriends comic as well as the animated series. But I don’t think they’ve shown up in the comics in their original incarnations. The closest thing to Apache Chief was Manitou Raven in the Justice League. He even used to yell “Eenukchuck” or something close to that before using various powers including growing.

    • There was an homage to the Superfriends heroes in a Justice League TAS episode, including a Power Twins with similar powers.

  3. Whoa. Did not see that coming. Can’t trust any of those Beetles.

  4. This show is fantastic! It’s a crime that this is the last season.

  5. Damn, the one white kid had to be a snitch and sound the alarm.

  6. what’s with el dorado looking like spike spiegal from cowboy bebop?

  7. Is there any chance of an Animation Brain Trust episode, for the entire series, when it wraps up?

  8. Apache Chief = Awesome

  9. Finally caught up all the way on this series. Man, these last few episodes have been pretty great. I’ve had very little experience with the Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle in the comics, so this plot line opened my eyes to that character. Good stuff.

  10. is there a trailer for next weeks episode?

  11. I enjoyed this episode tremendously. I liked the Super friends up date, and the ending with the Beetles was exiting and has me looking forward to next week. it is a shame this show won’t be back next year.

  12. Love this show, am so going to miss it! This was just another awesome episode. These writers are so great at showcasing the depth and breadth of the DCU… it’s like they can make any character twice as cool as he/she usually seems in the comic books. What a treat it was, to see a bunch of throwaway C-list characters like El Dorado, Samurai, Apache Chief, and Black Vulcan (Static Shock) dusted off here, and tweaked into such cool new personae who can fill an entire episode. And “Young Justice” keeps making me love the new Blue Beetle – that alone is quite a feat.

I accept how the politics of TV production sometimes kills wonderful stuff like this. I just hope that the talents behind YJ get placed on other good projects, asap. They deserve it.

    • I agree with your whole post, Black Vulcan is just a cool name too. Jamie Reyes Blue Beetle is interesting with the Peter Parker personality and how the scarab/suit can take over his body kinda like how Venom can his hosts. This show is a treat and will definitely tune in to the Teen Titans, hope everyone behind YG is onto other DC animated projects.
