Want to Try Some More Image Comics? Mage by Matt Wagner and more for $1

It seems that all the major publishers have been working to expose their comics to new audiences by offering super cheap reprints for people to check out, which in this reporter's opinion is a great thing.  Image Comics had a wave of first issues for only $1 dollar this past April and May, and today they've announced that they're back for more this fall!

Starting September 1, 2010 Image will be offering 5 more of their hits first issues for just one dollar!  The list of books and release dates are as follows:

IMAGE FIRSTS: THE DARKNESS #1
story GARTH ENNIS
art & cover MARC SILVESTRI
SEPTEMBER 1

IMAGE FIRSTS: LIBERTY MEADOWS #1
story FRANK CHO
art & cover FRANK CHO
SEPTEMBER 8

IMAGE FIRSTS: WANTED #1
story MARK MILLAR
art & cover J.G. JONES
SEPTEMBER 15

IMAGE FIRSTS: I KILL GIANTS #1
story JOE KELLY
art & cover J.M. KEN NIIMURA
SEPTEMBER 22

IMAGE FIRSTS: MAGE #1
story MATT WAGNER
art & cover MATT WAGNER
SEPTEMBER 29

This is an interesting grouping, since besides The Darkness, none of those books are by any of the Image Founders.  The Image Firsts program seems to be expanding deeper into their library to expose people to the work of Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) and Joe Kelly (I Kill Giants) as well as giving readers a chance to try The Darkness or Wanted.

The title I'm most curious about is Mage #1 by Matt Wagner.  Best known for his Grendel series, Matt Wagner's Mage is one of my personal favorite indie comics, with the original series being published in the 1980s and the second series published by Image in the 1990s.  Could this mean that another Mage series could be coming soon? We can only hope.

Either way, for a dollar, you can't go wrong with the likes of Matt Wagner and the rest of the creators involved.  Let's hope Image continues this program and pulls in some new readers along the way

Comments

  1. Wagner is one of my favorite creators, mostly for Grendel, but I love Mage so much. He had intended for mage to have three books (I think I read the third was at some point going to be titled The Hero Denied?), I really hope this is an indication that he is gonna be doing it.

  2. Color me stoked about the possibilities of a 3rd Mage series.  I do believe I’ve heard him speak about his intention that it would be a trilogy, but it’s been long enough since I heard it that I can’t be sure.

  3. I met Wagner at Heroescon a couple of years ago.  While I was in line, it seemed like about every other person asked him when Mage 3 is happening.  You could tell he was REALLY sick of that question, so maybe he’s finally decided to get people to stop asking.

Fun Fact: The inks on the first Mage series were one of Sam Kieth’s very first works.

  4. Who did the colors on the original Mage run?  Whoever it was, they deserved an Eisner Award.  Of course, there was no Eisner Award in 1986, but you get my drift.

  5. I would love to see Image reprint the Mage comics.  It’s impossible to find completely collected.

Wagner did his own colors for the original Comico series.  Later, Image reprinted the series with Jeromy Cox and James Rochelle re-coloring it to match the coloring in Hero Defined, which had been colored by Cox. (via ComicBookDB)

  7. Matt Wagner has done some really good Batman
