Want to Make Comics? Learn How with Comics Experience

I spend a lot of time talking about making comics, and I know there are a lot of prospective comic creators out there. It's a long and lonely road, but there is help out there. IDW editor Andy Schmidt asked me to remind people and let them know about some of his upcoming Comics Experience classes in the coming months, and there are limited slots, so now's the time if you've been thinking about it.

Ever thought of what it would take to be a comic book colorist? Andy and colorist Chris Sotomayor are teaching a six week course, starting on 3/7, meeting at night for six weeks.

Want to write? Starting on 3/10, Andy will be starting the comic book writing class online, also for six weeks. It might be just the push you need to get you started in actually doing something. Don't think it can work for you? Nick Spencer took the class not too long ago, and now the guy is juggling more regular series than most people can handle. Sure, he brought something of his own to the table, but learning tips and tricks directly from people who know will yield something you can't get anywhere else.

There are more classes in comic art, as well as lettering in production in the future, but if you're not down with taking the whole class, make sure to check out the Comic Creators Workshop which meets once a month for critiques, as well as the month Book Club Live Discussion, where you can get your work critiqued by Andy, as well as professional guest reviewers. It offers a slightly less structured and less expensive way to make some strides towards a comic book career. Scheduled guests in March will include Jason Aaron and Jim Cheung.

Andy will be showing up on our Talksplode podcast before too long, but make sure to check out some of our past conversations in the meantime.

  1. There’s a coloring class?! That’s awesome.

  2. I’ve been kinda thinking about the Lettering/Production class for a while.  I think I’d just be wasting time in any of the coloring/penciling/inking ones.

  3. Er… wasting time because of my lack of drawing talent. I’m sure they’re great courses.

  4. Pfeh… I learned everything I needed from “How To Draw Comics: The Marvel Way.”

  5. sounds good, i think we could do the writing one–just to be sure, 3/10 is the 10th of March yes? will you let us know how to apply please?

  6. Lettering! Want!

  7. @fabyoni You can pay for admission on the course list page or on the Writing Workshop page specifically: http://www.comicsexperience.com/intro-comic-book-writing-course.html

@itsbecca If you’re ever seriously going to do the lettering course, let me know, would be cool to know someone doing it too

  8.  $500— too pricy for one who has to pay rent and food also
but that writing class is what i need.
BRAINFLASH!! Idea: iFanboy should do sponsorships, scholarships to help people get the lessons they can’t afford. you could offset the costs by advertisers, sweepstakes, and/or raffles
then you could have a stable of writers and artists who owe you.

I want to take the writing course in the next cycle or two.

  10. anyone who’s interested in lettering needs to take several classes in formal typography. That area is seriously lacking in comics today and it shows in the work on a weekly basis.
