‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ – S01E04 – “Venom”

Right now I think that Ultimate Spider-Man is mostly enjoyable but if I had two criticisms it would be that it’s not really a Spider-Man show as it is a new Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends type show. Also, it’s just really exhausting. The pace is relentless.

Here’s how “Venom” is described:

Doctor Octopus’ newest creation Venom shows up at one of Harry’s parties and attacks Spider-Man and the other trainees.

I look forward to your thoughts, opinions, gripes, live-blogging, etc.

Comments

  1. I think this cartoon is actually the beginnings of a new genre called ‘nerd-quirk’

  2. Wow, episode 4 of the first season, they already have introduced Venom. I guess by the end of the series we may get Carnage and Toxin. Which would be cool.

    • i really like carnage, but this show is so kid-friendly that i don’t think he would work well. if he does show up it will probably be a very watered down version of carnage.

    • Sure he could. They have Heath leadger’s Joker on kids lunchboxes, they don’t care about kids seeing violence

    • i just don’t think it’d fit the tone of the series. but it’d be cool if it did. i would love to see carnage turn towards the camera and have a zach-from-saved-by-the-bell-esque aside where he just starts talking about how he’s going to mutilate a whole bunch of kids. but i don’t see it happening.

    • dude, if it would make they money to put Carnage in there somewhere, they would do it. It’s not a Jane Austin adaptation

    • yes, that’s my point exactly. the best way to lose money would be to introduce a character that will piss of parents who will make sure their kids don’t watch the show. since carnage (at least, the carnage that i’m used to from the comic) doesn’t fit with the audience that the show they’re reaching out to, they’ll either make a version that does fit the audience (a watered-down version) or they’ll leave him out entirely. this show is definitely not reaching out to the same audience that dark knight was reaching out to.

    • Well, your point was about the tone of the show, not the finance, so I don’t know what we’re doing here

    • Carnage appeared in the 90s Spider-man cartoon. They did make some pretty major changes to him though. He drained life energy from people instead of chopping them up, but he looked the same, it was still Kasady in the suit and he was pretty crazy. He could easily be worked into this show with similar changes.

  3. It should be called Ultimate Spider-Man and His S.H.I.E.L.D. Friends.

  4. I love the touch of having Flash possessed by Venom.

  5. I didn’t like how Venom was introduced as already a part of Peter. Saying that it was his anger and aggression.

  6. The thing I like the most about the show is that it’s a Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends show. Hah!

  7. When I heard the new Spider-Man cartoon was to be Ultimate Spider-Man and Bendis would be involved I was insanely excited and anxious for this show. I know this is not exactly geared towards adults and i may be in the minority but I can not stand this show. The bits where Nova turns into a whiny little baby(literally) and other such annoying bits and asides just detract from where they could actually have time to tell a decent story. I have already removed it from my DVR.

  8. I don’t hate this show, but I recognize that it’s not for me. It’s comedy isn’t for me, it’s character designs aren’t all for me, and the issues it deals with aren’t for me. I’ll probably keep watching it in case something that is for me comes into it, but it’ll usually just be on in the background while I do other things.

I do, however, greatly enjoy the Marvel Mashup shorts.

  9. Starting to grow on me… Damn you Spider-Man!

  10. I loved this episode it showed a little seriousness and with harry now with part of the venom symbiote it will be awesome to see it play out , i really like the direction of that plot being a spidey fan it is something that puts my mind in a twist i hope other plots and subplots will come along the way and give it this edgy feel… so long spectacular spidey show i enjoyed watching you yesterday but you put me to sleep after 5 minutes.

  11. I agree that this show isn’t for me, which is OK because there need to be shows out there geared toward kids — that’s how I got into Batman, Spider-Man and the X-Men during the 90s.

What I will say is that my favorite part of this show are the “Amazing friends.” It’s great to see Luke Cage and Iron Fist up front and center, even if these versions are very different than the Heroes for Hire.
