Tuesday Showdown: The Flash vs. Spider-Man on the Court

Flash vs. Spider-Man

“Well this is a mess.” Barry Allen muttered to himself as he approached the crime scene. The high profile murder of Senator Snart had made it to the media faster than the police, thus the fastest man alive found himself fighting the photographers to get inside the court.

It was a classic closed-door murder but with a comic twist: it had happened in a racquetball court. Glass walls made a solution that much harder to find, anything happening inside would have been clearly visible to all in the gym. The bruises on the body appeared to be the only clue; could this have merely been a game of high speed racquetball gone horribly wrong? Barry knew the evidence and his experience were the only ways to know for sure.

“Notice anything, Mr. Allen?” Peter Parker queried from the edge of the police tape.

“Nothing yet, Peter. I only just got here.” Barry replied wearily. He knew Peter was smart enough to be with him on the other side of the line, but it wasn’t Barry’s place to offer favoritism to a member of the press. Nor would he care to even if he had the capability.

“Oh c’mon Barry, we both know you’re a quick study!” Peter retorted adopting the informality Barry had just initiated. Barry cursed himself under his breath. Protocol be damned, Peter might actually be useful. Barry marched to the assembled press corps and grabbed Peter by the elbow faster than the photographer could flinch.

“Alright! Come over here and have a look, but leave the camera.” Barry demanded beneath the din of the crowd. Peter discarded the camera quickly, as if leaving a piece of expensive equipment on the sidelines was normal.

Barry shared his first and only observation, “It looks like he was battered to death with racquetballs, which seems impossible because of their high elasticity–“

“– unless whoever was holding the other racquet hit the ball with metahuman speed!”

“Exactly! But even racquetballs can crack in half when hit too hard dead on, the killer would have also need amazing precision in addition to sensational strength and speed.”

Peter gave Barry a knowing look. “Are you suggesting this may be a learn-by-doing situation?”

Barry quickly flashed an uncharacteristic grin. “There’s another court without glass walls upstairs. Meet ya there in five?”

Peter’s face betrayed obvious excitement. He always had to hold back with Flash and Harry, but he knew Barry could keep up with the pace he preferred to play. “Good thing I brought my gear.” Peter replied as he deftly hopped back over the police tape.

Comments

  1. First? Flash by a nose.

  2. Peter is a scientific genius and i could see him putting his knowledge of physics to good use here. it would be close i think but probably Barry.

  3. There’s no place Spidey could hit it that the Flash couldn’t get to quickly enough.  Flash in a rout.

  4. After several volleys, Barry notices that Peter is really starting to lay into the ball.  His superhuman strength is sufficient to deform the ball as it strikes the paddle.  Based on this they decide the murder weapon just couldn’t have been a racquetball because even a very fast ball would store most of the kinetic energy by compressing itself when striking the target.

“Barry,” Peter asks “off the top of your head, do you know the glass transition temperature of polyisoprene?”

“Sure,” Barry’s face lit up “I was just reading up on common synthetic rubbers in Journal of Forensic Science last night.  It’s vitrifies at -94 F.  I guess at that temperature, the ball wouldn’t compress at all.  The elastic modulus would go way up and almost 100% of the kinetic energy would be transferred to the target.”

Peter’s brow furrowed.  “It’s an interesting idea, but to get the ball that cold, you’d need to keep it on dry ice.  Also, if you hit a glassy ball with your raquet, it would probably just shatter.  That is, unless you can think of anyone who can drop the temperature of a rapidly moving object with pinpoint accuracy…”

“You know,” said Barry, “I think its time we check into Senator Snart’s insurance policy, and who are the beneficiaries in Senator Snart’s will.”

  5. @Aalbatr0ss  “And didn’t Senator Snart used to be… ” GASP!!

  6. The actual winner is Peter’s advisor because when they publish “The case of Captain Cold and the Cryogenic Court” in Journal of Forensic Science, he gets listed as a co-author without doing any work.

  7. @Haupt  Oh, I thought he was a relative.  Wait, it was suicide!!??

  8. @Aalbatr0ss  I don’t know, it’s all made up.

  9. My comment vanished?!

I think Flash would win hands down.

  10. @stuclach  Yes and no. We had a technical problem with the article and had to delete the original and replicate it. So your comment went away with the original article.

  11. @conor  Ok.  No problem.

  12. Knowing he was out-classed in speed, Peter really lays into the racquet ball with all the spider strength at his disposal… Tearing a smouldering hole in the back on the court roughly the size of a manhole cover. He has only a second to recognize the smell of a ruptured gas line before his spider sense practically knocks him into a coma. His body finds itself snapped like a wet shower towel and by the time he regains his senses he finds himself on the street with several dozen other confused health club patrons. Then the blast wave hits them all, knocking them off their feet with its super-heated breath.

Flash now stands there in full scarlet garb, staring back up at the remains of the 24Fitness.

“Great Googly Moogly! Thanks for getting me out of there, B- er, The Flash. You get everyobdoy out, ok?”

Flash turns and gives him a long, hard look, then turns back to the fire and its dancing red luminescence.

    “No. Not everybody.”

    Damn that Parker luck!

  13. Hands down its gonna be the Flash

  14. @JimBilly4  Wait wait wait… are you saying Spidey just got an innocent bystander killed? Wow, Parker Luck nothing…. wait till you see Parker Guilt.

…as to the original question, I’m a huge Spider-man fan, but even with his agility I can’t see him beating The Flash’s speed and reflexes. If the ball was on FIRE or something and triggered his Spidey-sense, he might be able to prevent a shut out.

  15. I love this!!

  16. Flash by a………….”point” te he he 🙂

  17. So if Barry and Peter get together it turns into an episode of Psych?

  18. flash wins, they solve the case together, but then mephisto makes it so that it never ever happened… Awwwwww, not AGAIN!

  19. The Flash in one shot before SM even finishes the word “go.” SM has spidey-sense but not superhuman reaction time like the Flash. However, the displacement on air from the Flash moving so quickly creates an enormous amount of high pressure in the enclosed space, blowing the room up.

  20. Spidey webs flashes feet to the ground, and wins. Flash says, “haha very funny, lets try it again.”

They play another game where flash keeps moving in a blur and, spidey being outclassed in speed only scores a couple points thanks to spider sense.

  21. Peter closes his eyes, relying only on spider-sense and after an hour Barry just gives up and tells Peter that the whole game gave him “the creeps.” They go out for White Castle and discuss various ways to beat the snot out of their respective rogues galleries.

  22. Ooh! >.< This is a tough one. My fave fictional character (Peter) vs. my fave DC character. I’d say Spidey uses his Spider-sense, but that’s more of a danger thing. Let’s face it, Flash has this one wrapped up.

  23. @oopsxlandmine  FWI Flash could sooooooo get out of his webs and even if we were to asume you are correct the flash could just vibrate his body through it.

  24. @FoeApple I know.. i just can’t admit that Spidey could be so brutally outdone at anything… even when i know its true.

If they had to make their own rackets…. spidey wins ;P

  25. Are you kidding me? There is no question by my avatar that The Flash is my favorite character in the world and Spidey is one of my favorites from Marvel. It would be an intresting event however; Barry being Barry would play it to the hip while working on the case at the same time. Being a police scientist which is Barry’s line of work to begin with it would not take him long to solve the case fight and defeat the super villan and then finish the game with Spidey. Winning the game at the end of course and then sharing is years of wisdom and knowledge on police science and all of his years in being a super hero! Peter being the hero that he is would enjoy every moment with eyes of admiration and thank Barry for everything and then of course challenge him at another sport that he thinks he could beat him at. This would be a very good cross over; meaning the two of them. Thanks for the set up this was very cool!!!!!

The next one should be like Iron man vs Batman or Green Lantern Guy Gardner vs The Punisher or even Hal Jordan GL vs Thor ok one more Lex Luthor vs Beast….Ahh????

    Thanks again,
