Tradewaiters Gonna Wait: NEAR DEATH Vol. 1

Welcome to the inaugural post of a new feature here at iFanboy, Tradewaiters Gonna Wait!  With so many comic fans dismissing a new series or a a run on an existing series with the simple line, “I’m going to wait for the trade on that one…”  we thought it would be good to take a moment a remind you of some of the comics that you may have forgotten about, as you waited for the trade and remind you why you should give them a shot.

NEAR DEATH VOLUME 1

written by JAY FAERBER
art by SIMONE GUGLIELMINI

Collects issues #1 through #5

Image Comics
120 PAGES / $9.99

WHAT IS IT?
Near Death is a crime fiction/action comic that tells the story of Markham, a professional killer who has a near death experience and gets a glimpse of what awaits him in Hell. After surviving that, he vows to do whatever he can to avoid returning to Hell and facing those who he killed, he turns over a new leaf to start saving a life for every life that he’s taken.

WHY SHOULD YOU READ IT?
Writer Jay Faerber has been best known for his super hero work, writing at Marvel and then doing Noble Causes and Dynamo5 at Image Comics. This is some of Faerber’s strongest comic work to date.  Teaming up with artist Simone Guglielmini, Near Death is a great crime/action comic that tells single, episodic stories that  feel like a 1980s action TV show (in a good way).  Image Comics publisher Eric Stephenson recently talked about how great Near Death is, and both Ed Brubaker and Brian K. Vaughan have raved about the series.

IF YOU LIKE…
If you’re a fan of the crime fiction genre such as Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Criminal series, the Parker graphic novels by Darwyn Cooke, Gotham Central from DC Comics or you miss Fell from Image Comics, then Near Death is right up your alley.

WHAT DOES THE COMMUNITY THINK?
Ed Brubaker and Brian K. Vaughan not enough for you? See what your compatriots at iFanboy thought.

iFanboy users who have pulled & rated the the first 5 issues of Near Death has averaged 4 stars (out of 5)

  1. Great price and looks awesome! May have to check it out.

  2. Also, the title of this column is just begging to be on a t-shirt. I would buy one. Get on it!

  3. i really love the idea of this as a new recurring column. There is so much emphasis on wednesday new issues and SO MUCH STUFF constantly coming out that can be easily missed or forgotten, it seems very needed. You can buy comics on the other 6 days of the week! =)

  4. Great topic for a new article Ron! There is no guarantee that something good might be collected in a trade so its good to let people what they could be missing out on.

  5. As a trade-waiter who sometimes gets lost along the way, I appreciate this new feature.

  6. Great idea for a column – hope all the iFanboy’s (Ron, Conor and Josh) participate.

  7. Really happy to see this new feature. Something more focused on trades was needed. Well done!
