Top 5: Comic Book Half-Humans

The rules are simple, but they are strict:

  1. DNA must be ½ human (Homo sapiens sapiens) and ½ non-human.
  1. Character must have been made via procreation; no clones, elective gene-swapping, etc.
  2. No deities, they may like making it with humans but they don’t fit in the evolutionary tree so who knows how to classify the kids?

5. Spock

While not originally from comics Spock has to be considered one of the greatest hybrids in fiction. His heritage defines so much of his character. Will he maitain his calm, cool logic, or give into all too human emotion? Also, he has green blood.

4. Zatanna

I’m really hoping to shock some folks with this one because it turns out that Zatanna is the daughter of the human man Zatara, and a woman named Sindella of the race Homo magi. The Silver Age was a weird time, many new species of hominid were discovered. And don't even get me started on Iris Allen…

3. Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch

I fully expect this choice to cause some controversy but see the above rules and consider the fact that their father, Magneto, is Homo superior (therefore a non-human) and their mother was a gypsy named Magda, very much human. Therefore I argue that they qualify, but in anticipation of dissenting opinions, my column tomorrow deals with the issue in greater depth.

2. Invincible

While he's by far the most recent creation on the list, Invicible gets the #2 spot because Viltrumite DNA is almost 100% compatible with human DNA. It's a nice line, but it's been stuck in my head since I first read it. There will be a column about that concept down the line.

1. Aquaman

Much as Josh may seem to refute it, people from Maine are Homo sapiens. People from Atlantis are not. If you’re looking for the nitty gritty behind the origin of our top hybrid, then you should get caught up on Tom vs. Aquaman.

Comments

  1. I would have thought Blade would have been on the list somewhere.

  2. Zatanna’s mother’s name is Sindella (just for your well placed “blank”).

  3. Hmm some mutants as Hybrids. Under the parentage rules that you have set forth Ryan, I would argue that Magneto is all Human because both of his parents are human, therefore Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver could be considered human. It begs the question however, and I am not current on this topic, but is mutancy a DNA thing or a gene thing? if a DNA thing, then I can see your argument, but if a gene thing, wouldn’t that make people with blue eyes human and people with brown eyes different? (i may be reaching).

And I am very happy you picked arthur number 1!

@JesTr i would say no to Blade only because he was not concieved by a woman and a vampite, but his mother was bitten by a vampire, changing his DNA in the process. At least that’s what’s happened in the movie, not sure about comics.

  4. @WeaklyRoll  That happened in the comics too but in the comics it just made him immune to vampire bites

  5. @roi, yes that’s right, thanks!

  6. Does Raven count? You said no gods, but you didn’t mention demons. Judges?

  7. I had no idea about Zatanna.

  8. Surely Hellboy should be here. The truth about his human lineage was pretty awe-inspiring.

  9. Aquaman may be half-human, but he’s 100% awesome.

  10. If someone had told me that Zatanna and Scarlet Witch would be on a top 5 list, my first guess wouldn’t have been it would be due to their lineage.

  11. Peter Quill (Starlord) is half human half Spartoi
Superboy is half human half Kryptonian

  12. @wulf Superboy doesn’t meet the criteria at the top of the post

    Quill’s an awesome choice though!

  13. @JesTr  Blade wasn’t made half vampire by procreation. That came later. Which is what she said 😉

  14. Huh, so Zatanna is half human.  Did not know that.

  15. @flakbait  Good point.

  16. Isn’t Namor a half human/atlantian too? If so Namor always trumps Aquaman.

  17. @PotatoPope  Only on opposite world!

  18. Definitely agree with Blade, Hellboy and Raven needing to be there. I will call foul on Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch, though. If you have an X gene, you’re a mutant. There’s no half-X gene (as far as I can tell) and their powers aren’t dulled by being half-human…

  19. @wulfstone  Superboy is a clone – see rule 2.

@MisterJ  Zatana – half human, all hot.

  20. The 8th Doctor, and only the 8th because it was retconned out really quickly, was half human and had comics.

  21. I would definitely put Namor on this list.

  22. Aquaman > Namor everytime.

  23. Not only is Namor > Aquaman, but he’s also a much better example of a half-mutant than Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

Whether someone is a mutant isn’t determined by their parentage, it’s determined by whether they have the X-gene. The gene appears able to appear spontaneously (true mutation in the classical sense) or to be passed on. A half-human, half-mutant with the X gene is a mutant. One without it is human.

My nominations to go on this list would include Star Lord, Namor, and Hellboy. Good calls on Zatanna, Spock, and Invincible though.

  24. i have seaid it before and i will say it again. i hate aquaman and i hate namor. they are just weak sauce characters.
