TIMELINE: The Marvel Studios Movies Broken Down Chronologically

There was a brief span of time wherein I looked at milestones in terms of BBY and ABY. I refer of course to the Galactic Standard Calendar, in which events are cataloged by their relation to the Battle of Yavin, the militaty epoch which saw the destruction of the first Death Star, the awakening of Luke Skywalker's Jedi pubescence, and his accidentally addressing Leia as "Carrie" in the hangar bay. All things existed in a temporal slot measured in years or months before the Battle of Yavin (BBY) or after (ABY). As an example, Admiral Ackbar famously barked "It's a trap!" on the Home One frigate during the Battle of Endor in the year 4 ABY. Chewbacca was allegedly crushed by Sernpidal's moon Dobido in 25 ABY. In the opposite direction, Cloud City's eventual chief administrative aide the the Baron Administrator–Lobot–was born around 37 BBY.

But I digress. Only because it's fun. To wit, a new timeline for a new fictional universe.

The Marvel Studios universe.

FilmBuffOnline has compiled a timeline of events in Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man II, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and soon enough The Avengers.

There's no epoch yet, unless you count BC and AD. At some point maybe we can look at things in terms of BCT and ACT (Before and After Cap Thaws) or something tailored to the battles seen in next year's Avenger's movie. No matter. It's still fun to look at these movies and stories as not just episodic nuggets in a shared world, but as overlapping narratives in which big things happen for Jane Foster, Tony Stark, and Betty Ross in the month of May.

Neat? Nerdy? Problematic? Insightful? Whatdya think?

Comments

  1. Somebody is going to take the time to create the “super cut” off all the films in one really long ass movie. (For a film student it might be an interesting experiment.)

  2. Cool.

  3. Wow. They did a pretty good job. Can’t wait to see it after Cap info gets inserted.

  4. All summer, I’ve been pondering whether an eventual marathon of all these movies in order will be an epic afternoon or an unendurable slog. I kinda want to attempt it this fall, but then I realize that means third screenings of Hulk and Iron Man 2 and am given pause.

  5. After looking over the timeline, it appears that Ang Lee’s Hulk film isn’t part of it but The Incredible Hulk is. That’s too bad. I liked certain parts of Lee’s Hulk. Perhaps a rewatching of both films is in order.

  6. Chewbacca was crushed by a moon?

  7. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@Bryce31  Vector Prime, yo. Mind, I said allegedly. What happens in the EU can stay in the EU.

  8. @PaulMontgomery – I remember that book as the moment when I discounted the EU entirely.

No mere moon can defeat Chewbacca.

This timeline is the best time-waster ever! Can’t wait until Cap is plugged in.

  9. As a science nerd I was annoyed by the idea that Stark could have been using his involvement in the Manhattan project as a cover for the Super Soldier Project.

The Manhattan project was also secret and primarily took place in Los Alamos, NM.

“Hey Stark! What are you doing here in Brooklyn? I thought you was out of town?”
“Oh nothing, I’m just on my way to Manhattan. *wink*”

No wonder a spy got into the Erskine’s lab.

  10. @JeffR  Well, one isn’t a Marvel Studios movie that exists in the same world as the other Marvel Studios movies and one isn’t.

  11. very nerdy but also a lot of fun i wonder if in the avengers movie there will be the infinity gauntlet any thoughts on who the villain or villains would be ??

  12. @HolyiFanboyBatman: Looking at the Thor after-the-credits scene and the Captain America movie, I’m going to speculate that the Cosmic Cube (OK, Tessaract) will play a moajor role in the film, and that the villains will include Loki and possibly Red Skull, Arnim Zola and/or Baron Zemo. Hoping the Avengers are Iron Man, Thor, Cap, Black Widow and Hawkeye, with cameos by Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Agent 13 and the Hulk.

  13. @player1  What makes you say arnim zola and i think maby the winter soldier may come into it as well as red skull loki and hopefully maridian from the ironman but without the rings more like a very good martial artist

  14. @HolyiFanboyBatman I would think they would save winter soldier for the cap sequel

  15. it’s gonna be cap, thor, iron man, hulk, hawkeye, & black widow, with cameos by nick fury, agent coulson, and maria hill.
loki is definately coming back as the villian.

rumor has it that he captures the cosmic cube and (get this) summons The Skrulls. full-out army scale ivasion.

  16. @thehangman  i hope galactus comes but not as a cloud that was a very very poor idea

  17. Cool!  Yeah, it will be neat to see when it is updated with the Cap movie.
