The Best of the Week in Covers – 10.26.2011

Don’t go breaking my heart
You take the weight off me
Covers, when you knocked on my door
I gave you my key

Scalped #53 cover by Jock

This is what they mean when they say, “A block off the old chip.” Stop throwing rancid produce at me!

In all seriousness, what better visual metaphor for the Rez than a community set atop an uneven stack of poker chips?

The Infinite Horizon #5, cover by Phil Noto

This totally mod cover in its warm, geometric presentation has seduced me with more than just it’s ginger siren song. The clean presentation of this asymmetrical design makes for an alluring composition.

Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest #2 cover by Dave Johnson

I really hope Abe doesn’t decide to try and hide that. Don’t be a hero, Abe. Go to a doctor or an ichthyologist right away and check off ‘suspicious rainbow colored tumor’ on the paperwork.

Green Wake #6 cover by Riley Rossmo

It always comes back to the frogs. We’ve long enjoyed Rossmo’s work on horror and science fiction titles, but this might be his boldest image yet. It’s like a sinister, Lovecraftian deviation of the caduceus symbol.

Comments

  1. That Abe Sapien cover is a beauty.

  2. That Green Wake one looks awesome, thought the guy was in a superhero uniform initially. What’s it about?

  3. Good call on Scalped.

  4. That scalped cover works as an incredibly poignant editorial illustration….the sad state of affairs of Native American life these days. I just love how those poker chips work as a mesa.

  5. That Scalped cover is absolutely incredible, but it’s Jock, so that’s obviously not a surprise. I also encourage everyone to check out the cover for Spider Island: Cloak and Dagger #3. Gorgeous.

  6. Anyone reading Infinite Horizon? Somehow I totally missed the boat on that one, didn’t even hear about it till a few weeks ago and def didn’t know it had Phil Noto on art

  7. If Jock isn’t nominated for an Eisner for best cover artist, I’m quitting.

  8. This is a solid, solid list. I have the Red Skull cover as my cover of the week.

  9. That Scalped cover is brilliant. I almost bought Green Wake of the cover alone.

  10. I remember when I was at the store this week, the Infinate Horizon cover caught my eyes. Might have picked it up & flipped through it, but I already had to put back books, so . . .
