The Best of the Week in Covers – 08.28.2013

Yes we are. But we’re like a real family. Opinionated, argumentative, holding grudges, challenging each other. We push each other to be better than we are. That kind of thing doesn’t happen at barbecues or ball games. It happens on the job where it’s supposed to. Putting down a murder. The work itself is the most important thing. What we do is important. We speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves and you’re not gonna ever find anything like that anywhere, not in LA, or patrolling the grounds at Disneyland.

Thor_God of Thunder_12

Thor: God of Thunder #12
Cover by Esad Ribic

A glorious depiction of flight to turn skyscrapers horizontal. A wonderful sense of weight and weightlessness here as Thor allows Mjolnir to tow him to his destination.

Lazarus_3

Lazarus #3
Cover by Michael Lark

Nothing says culpability like a reflection in a pool of blood. The end of one story and the beginning of another, all in a single, white frame sullied by carnage.

FBP_Federal Bureau of Physics_2_Full

FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics #2
Cover by Nathan Fox

Cheeky.

Gambit_16

Gambit #16
Cover by Clay Mann & Rachelle Rosenberg

This is practically an Eisner style Spirit title page. Not entirely sure how I feel about the letters in red rather than formed by protruding or recessed stones.

The Massive_15

The Massive #15
Cover by John Paul Leon

Fraught and frantic, all driven by the intensity of our man at the wheel and the rain of torpedoes.

Young Avengers_9

Young Avengers #9
Cover by Jamie McKelvie & Matthew Wilson

Loss. An excellent use of white-space as both a void and an immense weight.

Secret_3

Secret #3
Cover by Hickman, probably?

The ominous unknown.

Uncanny_X-Men_11

Uncanny X-Men #11
Cover by Phil Noto

Bonus points for Scott Summers in Peril.

Comments

  1. Personally, mine was Batman / Superman 3 because it has possibly my favourite rendition of Darkseid ever on it.

  2. I didn’t even know there was a Gambit series being published. Let me say to that: “Really?”

  3. Oh my. That Thor is gorgeous.

While it wasn’t doing anything new by any stretch of the imagination, I enjoy a good Justice League #1 homage cover and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #10 was one. Also, Bruce Timm did the cover to Adventures of Superman #4 and while I liked his Superman work, the background color was oddly off putting.

  4. Secret #3: “the ominous unknown.”

Or “the ominous Unknown Pleasures” perhaps?

  5. The Gambit cover really caught my eye in my LCS. Not enough to pick it up, but still.

I stared at that Lazarus cover for a while. It’s like you can just reach in and pick up that gun. But why would you? Lesson #1: Don’t fuck with Forever Carlyle even a little bit.

The “Bonus Points For Scott Summers In Peril” thing is never not funny. And Phil Noto is never not awesome.

    But Thor wins. Because Thor.

  6. Whoa…. a Joy Division reference?

Paul’s coolness factor just went up by 100% 😉

  7. Like that X-Men cover. Cyclops is such a douche.

  8. That Thor cover had me turning my comic in various angles, trying to absorb all manners of perspective. Beautiful stuff.

And personally, this week’s FF #11 gets a top spot because I could feel it messing with my mild case of colorblindness.

  9. Paul hates Cyclops and that inspires me to like Paul (even though I disagree with his movie reviews).
