Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney is unimpressed, but we’re not nearly as critical. Here are some of our favorite covers this week.
It Girl! And the Atomics #1
By Mike Allred
The only thing better than this playful magazine mock-up is the It Girl! symbol itself.
Resurrection Man #12
By Francesco Francavilla
If you’ve gotta go out, go out big. I hope this isn’t the last we see of ol’ Mitch, and knowing him, he’ll emerge again another day with even more power and potential. A wonderful color scheme here, with a bit of cantaloupe and honeydew.
Buffy the Vampire Slayers Season 9 #12
By Phil Noto
As with that last one, this is all about color. Contrasting color. Sometimes all it takes is a slam dunk pinup, executed with striking panache.
Space Punisher #2
By Mark Texeira
It’s the cape.
Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #2
By Jae Lee
Can we just talk about the shoes? In all seriousness, that warm yellow is such a rich choice for negative space. For an image so kinky, it’s positively deluxe. I’m reminded of the legendary Purple Orchid ’round the block, before it became a fried chicken joint.
I bought It Girl simply because of the text “Does Wearing Fur Make You A Villain?”
Because yes, it really does.
Now I have to read all of Resurrection Man.
Jae Lee: Still can’t draw feet apparently!
What’s wrong with the feet? They’re just very extreme shoes.
Actually I think he drew the only full feet in this week’s batch.
The (unproven) anachronism of the shoes still bothers me. Maybe it’s because stilletto’d platforms are now mainstream, but it feels like a shoe that wouldn’t have existed 20+ years ago.
of course, now that i think about it, the boy-cut shorts probably wouldn’t have been, either. 🙂
But those aren’t shorts, they are underwear. It makes sense in the context of the actual story.
boy-cut shorts are the name for a type of women’s underwear.
Apparently platform pumps didn’t appear in high fashion until the early 90’s. Not sure how long the existed in the fetish community or whatever before then.
And yes, I did look that up!
I heart Phil Noto.
Regarding that Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #2 cover; “Are you my mommy?” indeed!
I think I’m the only person in the world that doesn’t like Allred’s art.
That’s how I feel about Jae Lee.
So sad that I can’t keep up with Buffy because it’s not on comixology. I know I can buy it digitally on DH but I want it in my “library” in comixology T-T…
