The Best of the Week in Covers – 06.29.2011

Covers. They do a body good.

The Lone Ranger: The Death of  Zorro #5

Cover by Francesco Francavilla

Francavilla knocked each and every one of these covers out of the park. He brings a great sense of dignity to these pulp icons.

Avengers: The Children's Crusade #6

Cover by Jim Cheung

We refer to this book as a kind of fringe event, but Cheung lends a summer blockbuster quality to the proceedings. Sometimes you really want your cover to look like a cinematic one-sheet poster, and this one looks better than most of the stuff hanging in the lobby of your multiplex. Perfect.

Sonic The Hedgehog #226

Cover by Patrick Spaziante

This, ladies and gentlefunk, is my childhood in a rectangle. I can practically hear the MIDI files of the Casino levels. No better way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the sapphire speedster than with an homage to the Sega Genesis game box of yore.

Batman Inc. #7

Cover by Chris Burnham

Sadly, this scene does not feature in the interior pages, though Batman does ride a horse and we do get glimpses of the buffalo steed. But what a wild and woolly image! This is likely my favorite cover for this series so far, and part of that has to do with juxtaposition. The other part is Chris Burnham's sensational rendering of the rugged western landscape. America's answer to Frank Quitely, and he's a damn fine one.

  3. Someday, I hope they release a collection of Francavilla’s coverwork.  These Lone Ranger/Zorro covers have been gorgeous.

  4. Sonic Genesis is rad! yeah thats my childhood too…i’ve been chasing disappointing ports ever since.

  5. In the last 6 months Francavilla has really become a name I will watch and whose work I want to buy. That cover is compelling, beautiful and has a style that sets it apart.

  6. Those Francavilla covers have been crazy good.  I’ve been able to nab every one of them so far.

  7. That batman Inc cover was so ludicrous that I was worried about the issue. Thankfully the issue was incredible.

  8. Star Light Zone music will be in my head all day. Awesome.
