The Best of the Week in Covers – 06.15.2011

Covers are cool.

Doctor Who #6

Cover by Tommy Lee Edwards

The Doctor probably has really no business looking that composed atop a horse, but by golly, Stetsons are cool. I also have no idea nor care how he did it, but that is one finely rendered horse. There's a glue joke there. But we're gonna soldier on.

Ruse #4

Cover by Butch Guice, Mike Perkins & Laura Martin

This one's not so much in the final execution, but in the original concept. This is maybe the perfect visualization of the series' core relationship. Simon remains austere and coolly confident, but it's Emma who saves the day. Simon probably thinks they have a Pinky and the Brain dynamic. But it's more like…well, I don't know if there're any comparable right now. Emma's saving Victorian England one case at a time. More, please.

Flashpoint: Deadman & The Flying Graysons #1

Cover by Cliff Chiang

You're killing me with this banner. But if you scroll the page so you're just looking at Chiang's work: thing of beauty. This reminds me of those glorious circus and carnival tapestries that used to hang in the Willow Grove mall just outside Philadelphia. A real slice of childhood wonder and awe for me.

Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliaths #1

Cover by Geof Darrow

If you pried open my skull at age 11, this is what you'd find. Open it now and it's still in there, but there'd be some other stuff cluttering it all up. What I love about this is that it reveals itself to you slowly, rewarding keen attention. It's not just a monster brawl between Godzilla and Anguirus. Rodan's in there. King Ghidorah. Swarms of pterosaurs and crocodiles. Some kind of skull. And a bunch of really dumb gangsters. Walking towards it all.

Comments

  1. Some terrific covers, Deadman’s my favourite – wonderful concept, perfectly executed.

But yeah, andindeed, yeeeurgh, that banner ad.

  2. Cliff Chiang’s cover is one of my favorite covers of all time.  Everything works.

  3. The Deadman cover would have been frameable if not for the banner ad. I’m really glad DC put that banner on there, because even though the movie is being advertised 30589 other times in the comic itself and everywhere i go online and even during the NBA Finals, i basically forgot its coming out. #sarcasm

  4. if i can find a banerless version somewhere online im phone backgrounding it.  Go Chiang!

  5. That Deadman cover is one of the best covers I have seen in years.
Its so special, I had to create my first post to the Ifanboy.com. Love the website, the videos, the podcasts, and the community. Any chance that your video casts will make it back to the TIVO?

  6. Every time I see a Geof Darrow illustration I melt.

  7. It may be shallow of me to say- but time for CrossGen to update their logo.

If you didn’t know better and saw this cover in the store you would think it belonged in the
    back issue bin from 1994.

  8. Monster Island is always inside my skull.  It’s my Happy Place.

  9. The new Doctor Who series has been great. Just finished the Ripper storyline and loved it.

  10. Ruse was my choice for cover of the week as well.  Nice to see it get spotlighted (spotlit?).  I’m really happy that they have the original art team doing the covers for the series.
