The Best of the Week in Covers – 05.18.2011

Covers. It's what's for dinner.

Zatanna #13

Cover by Adam Hughes

Here's a terrific homage to vintage magic posters made famous by great illusionists like Carter and Kellar. The cowled devil and the little red-hot demons were a fixture in poster art at the turn of the 20th century.

Flash Omnibus Volume One by Geoff Johns

Cover by Scott Kolins

Oh, Wally. Running up the side of a building. You scamp. If this is, in fact, a Scott Kolins piece, it's easily the best thing he's done since switching styles from the method seen inside this collection.

Rocketeer Adventures #1

Cover by Alex Ross

File this under "Excellent Use of Alex Ross." You can smell the leather.

Batman and Robin #23 (shown with #1 at left)

Cover by Guillem March

March does a really nice job aping Frank Quitely's style for this sendup of the series' very first cover. While Red Hood doesn't appear in costume in this issue, the gag totally plays as a harbinger of things to come in this Jason Todd story line.

The Spirit #14

Cover by Ladronn

This makes me want to rush up to my walls and hug my original art pieces. There's something so inherently tragic about this image, especially given the fate of the First Wave project. Even still, another terrific Spirit cover brimming with more story and rich detail than the rest of the stack combined.

Comments

  1. wow, that rocketeer cover looks great. i like the noire look. I love the batman and robi but i like seeing falllen heroes.

  2. i like that spirit cover, but that side boob seems a bit too large.  geez, did i actually just say that?

  3. Thought the Zatanna was great. It’s rare Alex Ross does something I love, but that Rocketeer one was terrific. Didn’t really care for the Flash one and I don’t even know why. I usually really like Kollins, but that one just didn’t do it for me. Spirit one was really cool. I love seeing a cover that depicts an actual scene and not just a pin-up of the character. Unless the pin-up of the character is as cool as that Batman & Robin cover.

  4. Rocketeer wins for me. Great cover!

  5. I love the Batman and Robin cover almost as much as Mr. Quitely’s original.

Every once and a while Alex Ross comes along and reminds you just how incredible he can be.

  6. Zatanna always makes a good cover girl, but I think the Rocketeer is my favorite this week

  7. Is the Spirit dressed as Indy Jones & the girl as Tomb Raider. Yeah, tons of story hinted in Ladronn’s covers. And yeah, @MikefromGotham, that’s a little crazy. Wait, this is comics. Sorry.

  8. Oh, good Scott Kolins. Aww.

  9. How do we convince Scott Kolins to go back to this original style?

  10. It would be worth a fiver if we get the pot going to get some really good retro Kolins.  Who else wants to go in?

  11. I now want to run out to the comic shop on lunch break and buy that Batman & Robin book!

  12. great selections. I think Zatana is my favorite though. I saw that thing from across the shop.

and WHOA..thats what Scott Kollins art used to look like!?!! “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?”

  13. Nice covers, I especially liked the inclusion of the Flash Omnibus cover. My favorite was the Uncanny X-Force cover. Also, the originally soclicited cover for Batman: Gates of Gotham was sublime.

  14. Dick and Damian … I just can’t quit you! Dammit … I’ve been trying to jump off this title since Grant Morrison left …

  15. @cahubble09  I seriously regret doing just THAT!

  16. that’s it. im picking the rocketeer.

  17. LOL! I got sucked into Red Robin and for financial reasons try to limit my purchases to just one book from each publisher (I know, a fool’s errand). The fill-in story arcs have been OK, but the current arc looks interesting and I love the covers!

  18. I really hope that isn’t going to be the new Red Hood costume.

  19. Alex Ross still knows what he is doing, huh?

  20. The Rocketeer cover was fanastic! (Heck, look at my user image.)

  21. reeealllllyyyyyy   only dc makes good covers huh?

  22. @dent309  Nowhere does it say that. In fact, there is an IDW cover there.

  23. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

I make a concerted effort to include covers from multiple publishers each week while still being honest. DC happened to have a good week this time around. Last week was more of a mix with covers from Marvel, Image, and Dynamite. The previous week? Image, Dark Horse and Archaia. No DC whatsoever.
