The Best of the Week in Covers – 05.01.2013

The Best of the Week in Covers will always sit by your bedside and watch Downton Abbey with you until you feel better.

Hawkeye_10

Hawkeye #10
Cover by Francesco Francavilla

A creepy cover for a deeply unsettling issue. This one’s disturbing on a Kubrick frequency. It makes me want to confess stuff I didn’t even do! I tinkled on Josh’s floor! Not George Clooney the Dog! I couldn’t help myself! Forgive me, Hawkeye #9 cover!

Earth 2_12_Full

Earth 2 #12
Cover by Brett Booth & Norm Rapmund

WIZARD FIGHT!

The Superior Spider-Man_9

The Superior Spider-Man #9
Cover by Marcos Martin

Best peek into a brain pan since that issue of Lock & Key. A perfect metaphor for this issue’s Inception-style meta-brawl.

Abe Sapien_2_Dark and Terrible

Abe Sapien: Dark & Terrible #2
Cover by Sebastian Fiumura

Great storytelling of course, but it’s also heartbreaking to see a swell guy like Abe in this situation. He’s had it rough enough as it is!

X-Men Legacy_10

X-Men Legacy #10
Cover by Mike Del Mundo

Mike Del Mundo is racking up more landmark covers on this single run alone than many artists accrue over five or ten years. I have no stats for this. It just feels like that.

Comments

  1. Love Francavilla great issue ail-round!

  2. I think I’d probably go with Green Arrow #20, Earth 2 #12, Hawkeye #10 (although I wasn’t a big fan of the interior artwork), All New X-Men #11 and Aquaman #19 as my choices for cover of the week. Great selection though.

  3. Were you feeling weird about having X-Men Legacy here for each issue? I’m not reading it, but every cover has been pretty rad.

  4. Wha?! Either I am super unobservant or you are a Jedi Master of webpage editing. Anyway that cover is great. White backgrounds always get me.

  5. A good week for covers, i’d have added Jae Lee’s Animal Man & Ryan Sook’s Worlds’ Finest to the list.

…and now that Paul has most honorably offed himself maybe i will:)

X-Men Legacy has had really rad covers, I agree. Totally psychedelic and appropriate for the schizophrenic plot.

  7. Great cover on Abe Sapien this month. I don’t even read the series and I feel bad for the character on the cover :-p

  8. Judging a book by its cover, x-men legacy should be one of the best books on the stands.
Is it worth checking out? A lot of reviews were kinda meh. Any opinions?

Up until recently I wrote the AR cover recaps for the series (they’ve since gone in-house). I think it’s a fascinating character and the writing’s quite good. It’s only held back by the art, except for a handful of issues by fill-in artist Jorge Molina, who’s TERRIFIC.

    • X-Men Legacy is hands down one of my favorite titles right now.

  9. I love about half of the Earth 2 cover – Dr Fate’s colouring makes him indistinct on my printed copy, and Alan Scott looks like he shouldn’t be there. But Wotan – wow!

  10. Forgot to say, my fave was Animal Man #20, by Jae Lee and June Chung, with its Rockwell feel – just beautiful.
