The Avengers Come to Disney XD This Fall

Disney has announced that this fall will mark the debut of their new animated series, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes on Disney XD. Let's have a gander at the trailer they've released, shall we?

How 'bout that?

I'm someone who cut his teeth on the Marvel Universe, and I tend to be a bigger booster of theirs than I am of other comic lines. Having said that, if there are a couple of areas where Marvel has never really done it for me, those areas are the old school Avengers and Marvel's animated output. In other words, I would have expected the preview above to be an audiovisual sleeping pill.

Having said that? Can't wait. Now that I've seen what they have up their sleeves, I'm starting the countdown clock.

The animation style is reminiscent of Marvel/Disney XD's other recent creative success, Spectacular Spider-Man, exaggerated and heightened without being Super Hero Squad. The tone seems promising, and they've even made me believe Giant-Man and the Wasp might be something after all. I, for one, wouldn't mind taking twenty minutes a week to hear lines like, "The craft appears to be hostile, sir, and from the future!" delivered on that tightrope between straightfaced and winking.

It's also worth noting that, just from a strategic standpoint, it's not a bad idea to start telling kids who the Avengers are a year or two in advance of the movie. Well played.

What do you make of all this? Is this something?

  1. Awesome. Can;t wait. Heard good things about this, supposedly they’ve already started working on the second season. If it’s anything like the Spec. Spider-Man cartoon, we’re in for a treat!

  2. Sweet!!!  I love Spectacular Spider-man, I hope this is as good!!

  3. My jaw dropped when I saw the trailer, I’m…quite excited.

  4. Interesting. Weird mix of manga/Bruce Timm style, but I’ll give it a shot!

  5. I really like the art of all the backgrounds, but the character animation feels off. Still, can’t imagine having a show like this out there is a bad thing. And the Wasp/Giant Man being portrayed as not crazy or insane may be a good thing (if you were going to have a character wipe out their continuity via a deal-with-the-devil so they could "get back to basics" why not Hank and Janet Pym? Don’t they seem like the perfect characters who have been bogged down by horrible horrible things for decades now?)

Anyway. I don’t have time to watch cartoons any more, but it definitely could be something I’d watch on DVD sometime if it is good.

  6. KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Well, you can count me in for this. Here’s hoping we can get an Avengers/Spider-Man Marvel Power Hour like the late 90s Iron Man/Fantastic Four one that got me into comics in the first place.

  8. The first time I watched this it was over the shoulder of someone with headphones on so I didn’t hear the sound.  Second time with sound made me a little worried.  The voice over was very cheesy and makes me a little worried about the direction of the show.  However I am still interested and look forward to the new show, if it is half as good as Spectaculer Spiderman it should be amazing.

  9. This looks good. But i don’t think that I’m there demographic. that said, lets get some kids excited about superheroes!

  10. awesome. it’s only missing one thing……HAWKEYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. I’m impressed! I thought this was going to be some cheesy slapped together production, but it actually looks interesting! Hopefully we get Hawkeye soon. Let’s give it a shot!

  12. It looks great!

Though I’m a little surprised they’ve elected to go with only one woman.

    Girls don’t watch cartoons?

No love for craaaazy Scarlet Witch?

  13. they’ll bring in mockingbird when they bring in hawkeye. oOoOoOo i want tigra and wonderman, too. can you tell i’m a wacko?!

  14. The animation also kind of reminds me the recent Wolverine & The X-Men series. Even though I usually like the more detailed animation style of the 90’s X-Men, I like this type as well, as it’s highly energetic and can showcase some fast paced action scenes. I’m very excited for this series, am am glad that there are still all ages cartoons that I can get engrossed in.

  15. Happy days are here again!

Just have to get Hawkeye into the fold.

  16. OH….. the *ahem* kid-friendly avengers (aka the boring ones). They DID do a show like that before with the same characters (minus hulk) and it was god awful. Let’s hope the writers and animators make it worth que’ing up on tivo.

  17. FRAQ YEAH!!!!!

  18. The character design on this kicks the ass of the late ninties Avengers series (it currently airs on Saturday night on XD if anyone is interested), uhh battle armor.  And I cant believe I’m going to type this, that Antman in the banner is awesome looking!    I CANT WAIT!!!

  19. I as well CAN NOT WAIT!! Don’t like the Wasp design but its the style nowadays.  I want this to be the next 90s X-men

  20. just a question: Between Giant Man in the trailer and Ant Man in the picture, is Pym going to jump back and forth between the two?

  21. Exciting! Though I hope this airs with more regularity than SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN, which aired like five new episodes and then just stopped.

    I’ll set my DVR.

  22. Interesting that this is the original Avengers line-up plus Cap.

Really impressed with this. If I were 8 years old, I’d be all over this. And the same goes for the modern me.

  24. The animation looks great. I love the Spectacular Spider-Man show. I agree that the voice over guy is almost enough to make me worried, but if you ignore him then it looks pretty nifty.

But why isn’t Cap leading the team?

  25. @intergy Because he didn’t have a hit movie.

The announcer is part of the trailer and marketing for the network. It probably has little to do with the actual show itself. Batman the Animated Series probably had some pretty lame TV-spots as well.

  27. The bit with Thor knocking the bots around with his hammer was pretty thrilling. I’ll definitely give it a chance.

  28. Yes. No. Yes. Maybe. Wait. Yeah, I’ll give it a chance.

  29. I’ve never seen any Marvel animation that wasn’t lacking….something (haven’s seen Spectacular Spider-Man), but this looks pretty cool.

  30. I actually wasn’t that thrilled with the character designs. And it’s a kids show so I probably won’t be watching, as much as I like the characters these shows can’t really hold my attention anymore. No offense to anyone who does enjoy them, not everything is for everyone, right?

  31. Cool.  I will definitely give this a shot.  I loves me some animated comic book goodness.

  32. This Disney/Marvel deal continues to excite me more and more. I can’t wait to see this, the only problem is I don’t have Disney XD. I have backwoods south carolina cable that has no channels.

  33. Ahh the copyright claim team took it down pretty quick.

  34. NOO! Curse you, copyright ninjas! Now I’ll have to to wait until the trailer’s available via legitimate channels like some kind of hobo.

  35. @Casey! HA! Hobo.

  36. it’s having your trailer on the youtubes a good idea? WTF?

  37. Very cool. I’m loving most of the cartoon super hero out put (I don’t love Super Hero Sqaud, but it’s got it’s moments, and it’s not meant for me anyway) so I will be looking forward to this (And now that I finally have a DVR I can record it, sweet sweet technology)
