Stan Lee’s Soldier Zero: Exit Cornell, Enter Abnett and Lanning

When Paul Cornell was announced as writer on BOOM!'s Soldier Zero, he'd also recently announced his Exclusive with DC Comics, which lead people to wonder how that could be. Cornell got a special dispensation from DC to work with BOOM! and Stan Lee on the series, but it seems like now they have him all to themselves, as cosmic wonderkids, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning will be taking over Soldier Zero with issue #5 in February.

Abnett and Lanning, or DnA, as they've become affectionately known, have earned plenty of gold stars on their work over the last few years from Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thanos Imperative, The Authority, and more, so there's no doubt they have the chops to do well with this assignment, which seems to thematically fit with the kinds of work they do well.

In the meantime, Cornell will likely continue to be amazing at writing Lex Luthor and company over at DC Comics.  Make sure to check out Word Balloon's recent episode with Cornell, where he talks about the development of Soldier Zero and his collaboration with Stan Lee.

It should be noted that Soldier Zero is the best-selling title in BOOM! Studios history, so they've got something to keep up with.

  1. Tough challenge indeed.

  2. I know it’s not very recent, but I wish their Legion Lost and subsequent Legion reboot at the turn of (this) century would get some props. That was when I first got into their work and really saw what they could do with cosmic storylines. Great stuff there, and hopefully great stuff to come here as well.

  3. This explains Paul’s POV about working with Stan. He was polite but I think showed a level of being challenged by serving Lee’s editorial direction, while still trying to tell his own story.

  4. I just listened to word balloon. He didn’t say anything about the change.

  5. DnA is going to be everywhere in Early 2011.   They got the INFESTATION   event with IDW.   Heroes for Hire and Annihnatiors with Marvel.  And now Solider Zero with BOOM!.    As a super DnA fan , I am super happy right now.
