Spotlight: PrinceLess

Adrienne, like so many princesses born unto fantasy kingdoms, is locked away in a tower for her teenage years. Watching one would-be suitor after another attempt to slay the dragon downstairs isn’t the girl’s idea of a good time. When she discovers an enchanted sword under her bed, Adrienne decides to strike out on her own to rescue her sisters from their own prisons and put an end to this tiresome tradition once and for all.

Disney could take more than a few cues from Jeremy Whitley and M. Goodwin’s PrinceLess, a refreshing response to the frustratingly persistent damsel in distress genre. But the series is more than mere sendup, offering a vibrant and thoughtful adventure that never talks down to its all-ages audience. If there’s a kid in your life, they deserve to experience high fantasy from another angle, where tired gender roles are deconstructed and important questions are posed. Readers of all kinds will be thrilled to find smart, active characters ready to save the day. No more fainting couches.

PrinceLess is fun, funny and brimming with adventure. It takes an all-too familiar fairy-tale setting and breaks down time-honored stereotypes and cliches one by one. What remains is a bold heroine far more compelling than the pile of princes left smoldering in her wake.
