Smallville – S06E17 – Combat

Tonight’s episode: “Combat.”

I’d like to apologize for getting this thread up late. It’s been so long since a new episode that I completely forgot to check to see what tonight’s episode was. And it’s new!

I haven’t watched the show since the Justice League episode and from what I’ve been told I haven’t missed much. They are still there on the back up DVR, though, so I’ll get to them eventually.

Comments

  1. Hehe thanks Connor!!!

  2. This episode was pretty fun, finally a good fight, Kane can’t act worth of shit but it was still a great episode!!!

  3. Last week’s episode was HUGE plotwise. I’d watch that one first for sure if you have the chance.

  4. No apologies necessary, Conor, I have been wondering what the heck happened to Episode 16 myself (so understood why it was missing from iFanboy) and wondering when it was finally going to come out. I’ve been pretty confused.

I would like to add one topic to the mix if people think it warrants comment — what do you think about Smallville frequently taking a long hiatus between new epidsodes (4 episodes this time before a a several week hiatus)? Would you prefer a longer hiatus, but more concentration of episodes week after week, like 24 or Rome?

Maybe not all 23 in 23 weeks, but how about 12, hiatus, 12?

  5. Hasn’t it been like two or three weeks since the last group of episodes? Not too long.

You missed a couple of good things, Conor. Two bombshells dropped, one last week and one the episode before (weeks ago). Good Stuff.

    I haven’t watched last night’s episode, yet.

I think that ALL US SHOWS should adopt the 24 model and come out sequentially in one block. We’ve already seen what happens to shows like Lost and Jericho suffer greatly in the rating when taking long breaks, or too many breaks. I wish that TV execs would wake up.

Maybe not all 23 in 23 weeks, but how about 12, hiatus, 12?

Possibly. Lost is trying that this season and it doesn’t seem to have worked. Then again, that show might never be resusitated, ratings-wise.

Hasn’t it been like two or three weeks since the last group of episodes? Not too long.

In my current lifestyle, that’s forever.

  7. Dude LOST is coming back, this weeks episode rocked!!!

  8. I mean ratings-wise. Not quality. A few weeks ago they had their lowest rated show ever.

  9. EMERGENCY!!!!!!!!!! IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tonight’s episode will not be shown tonight, the next new Smallville will be shown on SATURDAY AT 7 CST

  10. i had no problem with the episode. It actually rocked and the action was amazing. mMy question:

When would Clark come to the point when he’s willing to kill? He’s the “Boyscout” would he really try to kill the Zoners and not find a way to send them back?

    Just one issue i had.

  11. He did seem to be struggling with the fact that he was forced to kill, it was an accident and in self defense, and imagine what hes going through being that Lana just married Lex and he has all these villains that he “let” out of the phantom zone all running free killing people. Lets not forget that Clark is still pretty young on Smallville and he’s not a Superhero he hasn’t gone through Jor’el’s training so he’s bound to make mistakes like accidentaly killing a crazy super villain who beat up his future wife and was savagely beating him down as well!!!!

  12. Oh, I just watched this episode, and what should have been major turning points to me just seemed…oh, ho hum. I don’t know what it is — too much hiatus between shows, so many years of Lana being clueless about Clark but always curious about something that’s staring her right in the face and SO obvious, the fact that the actress playing her stopped being compelling to me the second show she appeared (in the first season), too much of the “Well we can’t get you all worked up with our writing so we’ll do a big music video at the beginning and end of the show,” and on and on.

They’ve also been hyping these “big plot developments” for a long time. Lex and Lana are getting married — we know. Lana’s pregnant — we know. There is something strange about the baby — we know. Clark can’t get over Lana — we know. Lana is making a big mistake — we know. Lex is lying to Lana — we know. So you know all the stuff you know and we covered in so many other shows? Here is a show about all that stuff. But no real answers. Ho hum. Oh, and the one scene with Clark using his superpowers shown twice because…why? Running out of things to write about? Lana set it up. Surprise.

The scene in the crypt was nice. I always love a good scene in a crypt. But take it from me, who loves that kind of stuff to death, far more than I should — organ music and fog machine (fog machine?) is waaaaaaay heavy on the overkill.

Too much Lana, not enough Chloe, Lionel, or even Lex. Clark did not save the day, but Lionel CERTAINLY saved this episode as far as I’m concerned. Grumble grumble grumble grumble.

  13. You nailed it perfectly, Wally. Could they get away with killing Lana? Put her out of her misery. I know it would wreck Superman continuity, but I don’t buy anyone being that dense. Not even in a comic book/television world. Other than her relationship with Clark being dragged out this long, I really enjoy this show. If this Lana/Lex plot point developed two years ago, I might have been interested. Right now, it is too little way too late.

  14. Wally, I think your talking about the wrong episode, Lionel didn’t even show up on this one and there was no crypt!

  15. “Wally, I think your talking about the wrong episode, Lionel didn’t even show up on this one and there was no crypt!”

OH, ok. Thanks for that. Which goes to the fact that Smallville’s broacast schedule is completely inconsistent. If you look at the top of the thread, it is called “Episode 16, Combat” when in fact “Combat” is episode 17. It is extremely rare that Conor make an error like that, as he’s always careful and excellent with details, unless the broadcast schedule is just…not helping. Is there a thread for Episode 16? Never mind, probably not important.

I have noticed the number of comments on Smallville seems to be decreasing on iFanboy… Too bad. I was a fan of the show. I hope Combat is a better show that that dumb wedding one….

  16. OK, Smallville confusion resolved, I have now seen both epidsodes. Here it is if you got confused like me:
Episode 16: “The Promise” (Lana and Lex get married)
Episode 17: “Conflict” (Clark fights a Phantom Zoner, FIght Club kind of set up, Clark discovers his inner angry, lots o fight stuff)

I don’t know this Kane guy, I just thought he looked like Conor…

My other post is, as Raph correctly pointed out, not about the latest episode, that’s about episode 16, The Promise, Lana and Lex get married. So I expected crap from Episode 17, Conflict, seeing that dumb fight club in a cage trailer (who hasn’t done that before?) and fully expected to be disappointed again.

WELL, I really LIKED this episode (17, Conflict) a whole lot. It was really enjoyable. I won’t go into the details, but this one episode took on something people have been looking for and Conor mentioned a few times — Clark’s perpetual emotional stagnation, and when the heck is he going to move on.

Compare episode 16 (Promise) and episode 17 (Conflict) by the use of music in both episodes, and it’s extremely clear that the two were directed by two completely different people — the first (16) extremely poorly, and the second (17) really well. In all other aspects, even down to subtle acting touches, this is true.

My theory on Smallville must be accurate — the staff of the show is divided into two groups, both with equal influence at the studio, one very bad, one very good, and they absolutely refuse to talk to one another, and nobody helming the show can or will make the two groups work together or fire the bad people. The really good people consistently turn out really good scripts and shows, and the really bad people consistently turn out really bad scripts and shows.

This is exactly what happened, and unless they get their act together, this is a show asking to be cancelled.

OK, Lana lost the baby (no surprise there, just glad they didn’t hang on to that for the finale), I predict it’s in a jar somewhere at LexCorps. SO, what’s the excuse to keep Lana around? I don’t see one. FANTASTIC. Even hanging plot threads that still apply to Lana can be done without actually having her in the room much. FANTASTIC. PLEASE don’t keep her around if they do one more season PLEASE….I’m begging here…..

  17. Does anyone get why they went nonlinear with the timeline in these last two episodes?

  18. “Does anyone get why they went nonlinear with the timeline in these last two episodes?”

I don’t think they went “nonlinear” in the sense that the continuity of the stories doesn’t exactly match up, it just seems like there are two groups of writers/directors on the show, they are badly coordinated, and the broadcast schedule is a mess. Things heavily featured in one show are barely touched on in the next, so you get that “nonlinear” feeling, probably. Like a car that’s going in the same direction, but suddenly switchs gears and lanes all of a sudden.

The fact that the Lex-Lana wedding should have been a big event, but nobody here seems to give a rats arse, even though its supposed to be central to Clark’s character development in both shows is a good example.

Poor management at the helm of the show is my guess.

  19. I was talking about the timeline within each episode. More so in the episode before last. Each character’s story was told out of linear order, like Pulp Fiction. I kinda get that one, because it focuses on each character. However this past episode began, then flashbacked to days before and ended back at the same point it was at in the beginning. I am not sure why they did it that way.

  20. Someone has to fill the non-linear hole now that Studio 60 is on the shelf…

  21. OK, non-linear, I get what your saying Dave. Yeah, you’re right, they did do that trick where you see something, followed by a “48 hours earlier” title when the show comes back after the opening titles. It’s actually a pretty standard trick for storytelling these days I think if it’s used effectively, it can make for a good episode. I don’t read too much into it — I think Smallville may just be desperate to get their ratings up, and are doing everything they can to grab the attention of viewers in the first 5 minutes, or other little tricks and gimmicks. In neither episode did I think it added to the story or make for a better episode.

I would like to see the ratings for Smallville — my guess it’s dropping badly, which is too bad. I have been a fan of the show and stuck with it but…Tricks like this (what Dave mentions) can’t help a show with so many other problems.
