  1. Man, this looks to be a pretty nice week as far as comics are concerned.

    52 Week #21
    Teen Titans #39
    Amazing Spider-Man #535
    Cable/Deadpool #32
    CAPTAIN AMERICA #22
    DAREDEVIL #89
    ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #100
    ULTIMATES 2 #12

Conor, you don’t read “The Ultimates”? That’s kinda strange. I was pretty sure everybody read that book. It’s really awesome…and we finally get our all-out WAR.

Also, am I THE ONLY PERSON READING CABLE DEADPOOL?? Come on people! I’m hoping Ron is still reading it. This book is so…good! Definitely one of the best ‘under-the-radar-titles’ from Marvel (after X-factor). I know that it’s a book based on Liefield charcters…but come on! The writing alone makes this book gold. In my opinon at least.

  2. I don’t know if Conor reads Ultimates. You’d have to ask him. I don’t. I gave up early on in Ultmates the first time when it wouldn’t come out very often. On top of that, I’m just not the biggest Millar fan there is. Not my speed usually.

  3. okay, so this is where I embarrass myself. I fear tomorrow because I am probably going to pick up too many books…

who’s doing POW? if its ron, i say ultimates 2. if its conor, i say batman #657.

  7. Due to geographical/situational circumstances beyond our control, I’m doing this for the second week in a row. And I wouldn’t bet on Ron for Ultimates 2. I’m not sure he buys it, but I’ve never heard him even mention it.

And Mike, you need to learn to say no.

  8. actually, i never have heard u guys talk about it. then again, its probably come out once since you started the podcast. in that case, i’ll place my bet on eternals.

    CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE #6
CIVIL WAR YOUNG AVENGERS & RUNAWAYS #3

…and then with the rest of my paycheck, I’ll rent a U-Haul to get ’em home.

I still remember when Ultimates Vol. 1 came out, months and months behind schedule, and I declared, “Oh, to hell with this Millar. I don’t even remember what’s happening; the dramatic flow is a thing of the past. I am never putting myself through this nonsense again.” Stupid.

Then Vol. 2 came out, and I thought, “Well, surely after last time they learned from their mistakes. They won’t let that happen again.” So, so stupid.

  13. Okay, I’ll concede the timing problem, but it’s still a really good book. I know that schedules are one of the biggest killers for comics, but this book still tells a gripping story that keeps me coming back for more. And I mean, come on, this issue the entire Ultimate-MU is gettin’ ready for a brawl to take back AMERICA.

Do you at least buy the trades?

(P.S.: Mike, holy crap! Josh is right. You need to say no! You don’t wanna read enough comics to put you into the pooor house!)

  14. No, see, what I’m saying is that I’m way, way stupider than that. I say, “I’m not buying Ultimates anymore,” and then I do… and then I say, “Ultimates 2 is even later! I’m done buying this!” and then I totally do.

Which, of course, is why they take my sucker-ass money for granted and don’t even look sad when they reschedule Civil War #6 for the next Age. I understand most of 2007’s quarterly earnings projections are based on money I’ll spend on books that I declared I’m not going to buy.

Speaking of books people claim not to buy: I don’t want to alarm anyone, but I just glanced at the recent sales charts, and that Wolverine Origins book is selling like it’s made out of candy and drugs.

  15. Man, really? I can’t STAND Wolverine Origins. Does he really need to appear in another book? I dropped it after the first issue…It’s just not DOING WHAT IT PROMISES.

HOWEVER! His regular self-titled book is way better. I’ve been buying it since the Concentration Camp issue…It’s actually REALLY good. I’m glad that someone isn’t just doing a generic Wolverine book.

  16. Wolverine Origins has been a complete and total abortion. I have no idea why I’m still buying it. If you’ve been reading Wolverine since the concentration camp issue(35 if I remember?) and you like it, you should go back and read the Rucka run(vol 2 1-18), it’s really good. I still miss it, and complain about missing it, and curse everyone who has come onto the book since because they can’t do it like Rucka did. And then occasionally, at least once a month, I find myself talking a little too loud and saying things like ‘goddamn Daniel Way’

  20. is wolvering origins really that bad? i’ve never read it myself, but i do remember liking daniel way’s wolverine house of m arc a while back.

it seems a lot of my favorite books always have scheduling problems: all star superman, ultimates, planetary, astonishing x-men before it went monthly, i don’t know why but late books never really bother me. unless they suck (grumblegrumbleallstarbatmangrumble.

At the beginning of the year I had a personal goal of buying no more than seven comics a week. Some weeks it would be okay to buy more, as long as other weeks I bought less. If I missed anything I would get it in trades later. Then Civil War happened and Brubaker on Daredevil was better than I expected. How could I pass on the Ultimate Clone Saga? Brad Meltzer makes Red Tornado the star of the first issue of Justice League. Ah well. I don’t need to eat as long as I have comics.

  23. Plenty enough this week. I’m still catching up on previous weeks’ stacks…

    X-MEN #191

I wish I was as good at dropping books as I am at adding them…
It seems to me that complaining about scheduling on books like Ultimates is redundant. We all know how long Hitch takes and I, for one, think its well worth it. If I was that bothered I’d do like Josh and cancel it or wait for the trade.

  26. 52 #21
    Batman #657
    Justice League Of America #2
    Supergirl #10
    Teen Titans #39
    Amazing Spider-Man #535
    Captain America #22

    Perhaps:
    Daredevil #89
    Zombie #1

The point about Ultimates is that it is the kind of book that kills comic book readers and turns them away from this great hobby: it never cames on time and the story does not thrill you enough to continue the momentum, therefore there comes a time where you don’t give a f**k anymore about that book, no matter how much advertising it receives.

  27. I think they should just release Ultimates in trades. Skip the issues. Then again, I bet it sells a lot more in trades, and the issues are just like icing on the cake. A little extra dosh for Marvel.

Either way, I’m not interested anymore. It’s fascinating though how people react to it.

  28. I just read Ultimates in trades, but I’m not sure that those who are bothered by the lateness would like it better if Marvel skipped the issues and went to the direct-trade route. They’d still solicit the book before it was completely finished, and Hitch would still not finish on time. It doesn’t really bother me that it is so late (or All Star Superman), but when a book is late and mediocre, then I’m out. If you are going to be slow, you’d better be damn good.

    Here’s my list this week:

    52
Action Comics (may as well – only one more issue before Donner and why break up the run in the long box)
    Batman
    JLA
    Teen Titans
Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters
    Trials of Shazam
    Amazing Spider Man
    Captain America
    Daredevil
    Eternals

and a big maybe on X-Men. The mystery that is Mike Carey may just be too expensive a habit on a big week such as this.

My bet for the PoW is on Eternals. A rebound issue from the boring #2 and #3. I’m surprised Josh isn’t buying Justice League. Aren’t you the one that liked that book last time, even more than Conor? I can’t wait for it. Also – why no Cap? It’s Brubaker!

  29. 52 #21
    Amazing Spider-man #535
    Cable Deadpool #32
    Captain America #22
    Civil War Frontline #6
Civil War Young Avenger and Runaways #3
    Daily Bugle October Newspaper
    Heroes for Hire #2
    She Hulk #12
    Ultimate Spider-Man #100
    Ultimates 2 #12
    X-Men #191

Thats two huge weeks in a row for me but I’m not complaining better than having nothing to read.

  30. What are the odds something like Ultimates would be released as a graphic novel? As long as Marvel is making money from the issues, the trades and the hardcovers, they have no reason to change their system. It is my hope Jeff Loeb and Joe Mad get this out more frequently than it is now. I know it is crazy to expect it to come out monthly, but more often than an issue every three months would be nice. Personally, I think I could skip the single issues and get the trades, but I know the story would be spoiled.

  31. These are definitely high-class problems to have. “Look at how many books I have to buy this week. I like reading comics, and tons of comics are coming out. This is bullshit!”

(As a miracle of science, I actually have a special compartmentalized brain that allows me to kvetch about the lateness of Mark Millar’s books while also whining about what a heavy week it is. “Those books don’t come out enough, and too many books come out.” If most people did this, smoke would come out of their ears.)

I don’t believe I can generate enough hot air to fix the late book “problem,” even on the web. But occasionally my mind goes back to when Kevin Smith went on the Tonight Show to promote Black Cat #1. I remember it being sort of a big deal, since apparently no one had ever done the Tonight Show to plug a comic before. There was talk about how many new people that would bring to the medium, and what excellent exposure that was for the art form. I sometimes wonder about those new readers who went to the shop for the first time just to become readers of Kevin Smith comics. How was their introduction to comics? Did they ever find out how the story ended?

In terms of scheduling and quarterly profits, I wonder how hard it would really be to just not publish #1 until, say, #10 was in the inking stage. Because when you get right down to it, I mind the books’ lateness a lot less than the fact that they keep acting like it’s not going to happen this time. (And I keep believing them.)

  32. I forgot to put in Justice League. I’ll be buying it. Good spot, thanks.

As for Cap, I missed it when it started, and tried to read a few issues here and there, but it just didn’t grab me enough for some reason. I know I should read it. Maybe I’ll borrow Conor’s issues and read through it. I mean, you’re right, I should be all over that book. But I’m not…

  33. How do I finance this week’s books? Amazon.com for all the trades and hardcovers, combined with the points from my Amazon credit card. It’s the only way to go.

I may even try Justice League #2 this week. I’m feeling goofy like that.

  34. Can I suggest you click through iFanboy on your way to Amazon so we can get credit for those otherwise lonely affiliate-less sales?

    Just a thought….

  35. I’m with Jimski. No Mas frontline.

  36. Amazing Spider-Man
    Batman
    Captain America
    Civil War: Front Line
    Eternals
    Green Lantern

I really did enjoy Justice League #0 and #1, but I’ve discovered that I have no interest in reading beyond that. Front Line also just barely makes the list. Up until 2 days ago I had it dropped off my list completely. It’s just been so… blah… But I have to see how it ends. Sigh….

21 books and a crappy magazine this week. I gotta drop Wizard dammit. Anyway, I will be shocked if Ultimates 2 isn’t my best of the week. It almost always is. The lateness sucks but I’ll keep getting it because it is so good. Anyway, also looking forward to JLA, True Story Swear to God, Daredevil and definitely Eternals. Gaiman always has a chance to blow me away and hopefully this is one of those weeks. And last but not least, I love that Michael Gaydos art, even on a mediocre story, so Snakewoman should be decent as well. Oh yeah – USM 100 is coming too – I heard Bendis talking about how awesome it is so hopefully he is right.

    CABLE DEADPOOL #32

    HEROES FOR HIRE #2

Okay, my take on the Ultimates: I don’t mind the lateness, for the sole reason that I only buy it in trades. I figure in between my waiting time, I can pick up other things, just finished the whole run of the Preacher (thanks to recommendation from iFanboy). To me if the art is consitant, I’m okay, because Ultimates isn’t Civil War, it doesn’t affect the entire line of books and really hurt the retailers (as far as i know, could be wrong). Because when the art changes so much it just hurts the book, IMO. A great example is Morrison’s New X-men, the art changed SO much so many times that I got taken out of it, and reading it in trade form, as I did, made it even stand out more! So I can wait. And I think JLA is going into my wait for trade stack, sadly.

  39. I buy True Story Swear to God in trades. It’s good. Recommended.

  40. True Story Swear to God is on my watchlist; just have to get to work on Fables and finish Scott Pilgrim first.

(Two books in, I can’t figure out how the author would have me feel about the characters in Scott Pilgrim. Am I supposed to like Scott?)

My shop was sold out of two books this week twenty minutes after opening: Heroes for Hire and Young Avengers/Runaways. I don’t know exactly why that cracks me up, but it does. 50 copies of Ultimates; Heroes for Hire, gone. (I imagine they didn’t order 50 copies of Heroes for Hire.)

You know? I believe I will buy my copies of Scott Pilgrim 3 and Pride of Baghdad via the handy affiliate ad on iFanboy.com. I’ve been sniffing around for a good deal, but the answer has been staring me in the face all along.

HEY AARON SCOTT: I tend to buy my books at the nearby Fantasy Shop, which is that most peculiar of beasts, a local comic book chain store. Years ago when I got back into comics, I became friendly with the manager, who knows my taste well enough to set things aside for me and occasionally raids other people’s “pull and hold” files when they’re sold out of something I came in for. That Cheers, everybody-knows-your-name feeling is the main reason I don’t just mail order everything. (But I think Star Clipper in the Loop is probably the actual best store in town; I think their indie-trade-to-mainstream-superhero ratio is 1:1, and their trade shelves are neverending.)

  42. JIMSKI: Star Clipper is the only place I’ve been to in STL I don’t make it up there that often. I want that here. That was such a great store. I too shop at a local/regional comic chain store but have yet to really warm up to any of the staff. It would help if all my pulled comics were there when I came by…

  43. Wasn’t Jimski the one saying that Alan Moore is overrated? I don’t recall exactly what Jimski said, but I do remember criticizing Moore for his appropriation of literary characters for LoEG while at the same time complaining about Hollywood using his. In this month’s Wizard, Moore is asked about this point specifically and he addresses it. It’s on page 36. Borrow or buy a copy so you can read it, Jimski!

Aside: Alan Moore’s Youngblood issues were brilliant!

  44. I can confirm that was Jimski.

That point doesn’t make a fair analogy because, and I suspect this is what Moore says in a way: the characters he appropriated were for the purpose of twisting a genre just slightly, or deconstructing something familiar. Or, as in LoEG, he used folk characters, a la Fables, who are in the public domain, as he did with the recent Lost Girls, which means it’s fair game.

The films are just bad versions of his stories, which is hardly the same thing.

I don’t think I got a chance to say that on the podcast.

    OFF TOPIC!

  45. I’m accidentally known for having a big problem with Alan Moore now, so… that happened. I’ll have to sneak a peek at that Wizard (I wonder if my library carries it) and give my accidental nemesis his say. I do agree that the analogy I made is by no means direct, just something I found interesting.

I tell ya. You look for common ground with Darrel, and you end up Conorbooed. Cautionary tale, my friends.

I really liked Amazing Spider-Man this month (back on topic!) but I would love to hear what a die-hard Iron Man fan has to say about Tony’s place in the Marvel U right now.

  46. “Conorbooed”

    that needs a wiki page.

  47. Basically the jist of his objection is that the Hollywood adaptations were totally different ideas with his characters names slapped on them in an attempt to make more money. Lost Girls and LoEG, on the other hand, are continuations of pre-existing stories; he’s not changing anything that had come before. He says he would not object to someone doing V for Vendetta or Swamp Thing if they had something new to say with the characters.

  48. Is anyone enjoying “Red Tornado and Friends” aka “Justice League of America”? I’m just not feeling it. As a matter of fact, I’m not digging any of the recent DC relaunches, dating back to Green Lantern.

However, I’m pretty pumped about the Wildstorm relaunches. I look back on the days of Ellis’ Stormwatch/Authority and Casey’s/Moore’s Wildcats with much fondness. For some reason Jackson King is one of my favorite characters.

Thanks to you guys, I’m going to be picking up the new Jonah Hex when it comes out in trade. What can you tell me about Loveless? (Forgive me if you’ve already discussed it, but I forget.)

  49. We talked about Loveless a lot when it first came out. I’m not sure if Conor still reads it, but I dropped it. It’s a beautiful book, and it’s got a very interesting voice, but I just couldn’t tell what was going on too often, and therefore, the story wasn’t holding my attention. If you like 100 Bullets, you’ll like this.

Hope you like Hex. Don’t thank us until you’ve read it though! 😉

Casey’s Wildcats was the best thing he’s done in comics. I loved that book. And Ellis’ work was so fresh and original then. I do miss those days. But I fear you’re not going to see that kind of energy in these new Wildstorm books, because you can’t plan it, or manufacture it. Stormwatch just happened. From out of nowhere.

  50. I know, I know. I am just a sucker. But still, I get a good discount and bags and boards, so it’s worth it, right?

    (right?)

anyway, it looks like I am not the only one who is going throw his back out tonight–Steve and Chris are carting a bunch too!

I have almost run out of room in my closet, though. I am actually starting to get a bit worried…

  51. Proud to report that I dropped Loveless this week. It starts really strong, maybe the first 5 issues, but 11 came out today and it’s sucked since 5. So…

ASM 535 was so good. I really hate that I have to wait another month for the next issue.

HFH 2 was good too. Same thing about next issue.

FRONT LINE 6 was actually really good this week. Everyone should give it at least one more shot. I really enjoyed it. It has a rare appearance by Jack Ruby, kind of.

CABLE & DEADPOOL 32 made me ask myself why I haven’t been reading this all along. The narration and the dialogue are very amusing. The story is good too.

Haven’t hit the rest of the stack yet

  52. This is the part of the night when I remind people that this is the “pre-game” area, and most of the real talk about this week’s books will go in the Pick of the Week thread, which will be up later tonight. Don’t blow your wad yet!

  53. Teen Titans 39
    Supergirl 10
    Batman 657
    X-Men 191
    ASM 535
    52 21
    Albion 6
    American Way 8
    Action Comics 843
    Daredeviel 89
    Stan Lee Meets Spider-man
    JLA 2
    Wizard 181

Through in all of that, Previews, a couple of back issues and an action figure and this week really hurt.

Thank God Albion is over after this week.

  54. Oh, boy! What happened this week? Oh… Civil War finally came out…

Here’s my pull list for the week:

Action Comics #843, $2.99 – This has just been a great story. When Johns and Donner come on board I’ll be a little sad to see Busiek leave this series. At least I’ll have him on Superman. Wait… that sounds weird…

Amazing Spider-Man #535 CW, $2.99 – This was a great issue. I think it was a little drawn out (well, it was a lot drawn out) but I can’t wait for next issue.

Batman #657, $2.99 – I read this issue tonight – next issue better be REALLY good to make up for this issue. Ugh.

Daredevil #89, $2.99 – This is my first issue of Daredevil with Brubaker on board. I’m cautious and excited all at the same time. LOL.

Heroes For Hire #2 CW, $2.99 – The first issue of this book was great, I can’t wait to read this issue.

Invincible #35 (resolicited), $2.99 – Awesome! Awesome series. I can’t get enough of this book!

Justice League Of America #2, $2.99 – I loved the first two issues of this book, but “whoa” this was a bad issue. The only redeeming part of this book was Arsenal (but that’s only because I like the character).

Teen Titans #39, $2.99 – Fairly good issue. I didn’t see the last page coming until I turned the page. Very nice. Much better than last issue.

Ultimate Spider-Man #100, $3.99 – I’ve been away from this book for the last year or so and I picked this book up on a whim. To the back issue bins!

Uncle Sam And The Freedom Fighters #3 (Of 8), $2.99 – I blame Sean over at Raging Bullets for getting me hooked on this miniseries. Just a great series!

  55. I’ve been ambivalent about Morrison’s Batman but I love where this is going. Damien is totally Batshit ™! The dialogue, with a couple of exceptions, doesn’t seem as awkward as the previous couple of issues. I find that for me Morrison’s dialogue alternates between clever and wonky. More clever this issue.

I was surprised a bit by the latest issue of Uncanny. Carey benefitted greatly from the art change. The art wasn’t particularly noteworthy, but at least you could tell what the hell was going on. I bet Carey cringed when he found out that Whedon was using the same plot device in Astonishing in the same month. I thought editorial would be all over that one!

I was disappointed by Ultimate Spider-Man. The only thing compelling about it is MJ in jeopardy. Peter’s dad yapped WAY too much. I hope this series isn’t jumping the shark.

God, I wish Captain America would have decapitated Pym in The Ultimates 2 #12. I really loathe that guy! (Did the art look rushed to anyone else?)

  56. We’re over here now:
