SDCC 2012: VIDEO: New DREDD 3D Red-Band Clip is Red-Banded For a Reason

Lionsgate has released a new Red-Band video clip from September’s Dredd 3D. If you’re squeamish, you may want to pass on this one. Forget Bullet Time. How’s about some Impact Time? Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby embark on a bit of a drug bust in a sleazy apartment. By the time they’re done, the tenants aren’t quite anatomically correct anymore. So much so, that it’s difficult to actually pull a family friendly screen shot to tease the thing. So here’s a promotional photo of Urban in the title role.

Now. On to the mayhem. The bloodletting that actually leaps off the screen and saturates the matte frame around the image. Ready?

Kids? Bath Salts are for pussies. This is your brain on Slo-Mo.

For those unfamiliar with Judge Dredd, here’s the official synopsis from the studio:

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

  1. Dude. That’s pretty bitchin’. They gotta darken that blood a bit but other than that, I think it looks equal parts ridiculous and awesome.

@PsychoJudgeDredd: How much do you love the fact that the promo image almost precisely matches your avatar (minus gritted teeth)? At the very least they got the helmet right.

  2. I think this movie looks great. I may make effort to see it in the theaters.

  3. I’m really looking forward to this film.

  4. ugg, that looks so goofy & fake. what is this piranha 3dd?

  5. Double Whammy!

  6. This looks like a high quality fan film.

  7. So…. when can we get a Where Do I Start: Judge Dredd? Any recommendations for a great Dredd story? I know the really broad strokes of the story, but not a specific story or collections that’s great.

    I’d appreciate any suggestions.

There are some big phonebook format collections available. I want to say that the most popular stories start in the second of those. I’m gonna try and put something together in time for the movie release.

  8. Yikes! I can hear the moral guardians from here – let the shit-storm commence.

  9. That dropped my desire to see DREDD about 30% I don’t care about that violence but that hyper-slo-mo, look-how-kewl-this-is was intensely annoying.

  10. The matrix showed us how bullets make air ripple, this shows us how bullets make bellies ripple.

  11. I love Karl Urban but that looks pretty damn awful.

  12. Lena Headey got a nice body.
