Sam Jackson is Nick Fury is Sam Jackson

Aint It Cool News has the ultra meta news that Samuel L. Jackson will be appearing in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man as Nick Fury.

Somewhere, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch just clinked glasses.

And somewhere, David Hasselhoff just cut himself on a hotel lamp. Again.

I love this. Art imitating art.

And you knew this had to happen eventually. Of course someone was going to approach Samuel L. Jackson about being Nick Fury (Ultimate Universe aside, he’s just perfect for the role) and you just knew that Jackson would say “yes” because he’s a huge fanboy. Hell, he’d probably say “yes” anyway. I don’t think he says “no” to anything. He even did that movie with Eugene Levy.

I’m kidding, by the way. Don’t hurt me.

Comments

  1. I would totally be down with this. Sure it’s mixing up the universes, but I’m not worried about it. So here’s hoping this rumor will come true.

But if it does, do you think he would come back again for the rumored Avenger movie? Would Marvel movie start to tie in together like that?

  2. Even if this and The Hulk ends up being awful (which I doubt), these will go down in history as one of the coolest casts for any action movie.

  3. I think the idea behind Marvel producing its own movies is to tie them together. There really isn’t any other way to do it when you have a group like the Avengers.

  4. Sam Jackson is the anti-Nic Cage. He does as many shitty fanboy movies, but people don’t give him shit for it.

“Hey Sam, we’ve got a movie here for you. In it, you play a-”
    “YES! I’ll do it!”
“But don’t you want to know what the part is?”
“I SAID I’d do it! I’m feelin’ real generous right now, see? And when I don’t feel so generous, that’s when mother fuckers start gettin’ jumpy. So just lemme sign that paper, and you can be on your way.”
    “You signed it ‘bad motherfucker.'”
“Yes I did! Yes I did.”

  5. BAAAAAAAD idea. Boooo!

I am so not excited about the Iron Man movie I intentionally forgot it was being made. Unless he dies in the end…that would be okay then. Stupid fascist is just jealous cause he has no real powers. And nick is an old fav of mine. I didn’t mind his appearance in Ultimates, but he didn’t really act like Sam Jackson.

BTW. Who else hated the cartoon. Garbage of the highest order, and now they are hell-bent on ruining Dr. Strange. Note to Marvel, make some “Amalgam” style deal and let warner brothers do your animation. PLEASE!

  6. You know that none of the stuff from Civil War will actually have happened to the character in the movie, right?

  7. You mean we aren’t getting an appearance of the Sentry? Darn.

The guy has always been shakey for me, he IS a weapons dealer. I haven’t been reading his eponymous issues, but I’d like to know if he is in therapy for his addictions. There is a term in addiction counseling for a person that thinks he is “cured” of his addictions and yet continues his negative behaviour without continuous therapy or meetings. Stark acts to me like a person with this kind of problem. Control issues galore!

Of course if a bad movie can make a good character suck, then maybe a good movie can make a bad character good. I’ll see the movie if you guys tell me it’s good. I guess civil war has made me bitter. I’ll go calm down now.

  8. Of course if a bad movie can make a good character suck, then maybe a good movie can make a bad character good.

I dunno…Just look at Blade. He was a nothing character til the movie. Then things….deteriorated.

  9. As much shit as you might give Samuel L. Jackson…

(the fact that we instinctively call him by his his full name, middle initial included, might say something)

…you know when the camera pans to his eyepatched face and he says some random badass fury line, every fanboy for miles around will be overwhelmed by a feeling of “fuck yeeaaah”

  10. I don’t remember a ubiquitous feeling of Tony Stark hate until Civil War happened. You might have never liked him, but he was a popular and valid character for about 40 years or so. All those traits about him might not make him lovable to you, but they certainly do make him an interesting, flawed, fictional character, who is ripe for the creation of drama.

So, to make the declaration that he’s a bad character is not really speaking for the majority, and I’d have to disagree strenuously.

For example. Is being an alcolic the same as being a bad person? Not necessarily.

He’s a weapons dealer…I guess, but you make it sound like he’s selling guns to terrorists, when in fact, he’s a defense contractor for the government. Some might say that’s a bad pursuit, but I would say it’s a valid occupation, especially if you feel there’s some inherent goodness in helping a nation defend itself, or for making our own troops safer. If he was a black market arms dealer, fine, but that’s not what he is. I’m pretty sure Bruce Wayne’s company does some defense contracting too, and he’s got his own foibles personally as well, but no one here would say he’s a bad character.

  11. Touche…nice response, Josh. BUT…

I don’t dislike the “existance” of the character in comics, just Iron Man the superhero when I suspend my disbelief.

I agree with everything you said, but because I feel that the current Iron Man is maybe a natural progression of the character, he is tainted for me. I once loved the character, but I can’t help taking very negative emotions into the theater. Maybe I should be angry at Marvel for ruining Tony for me.

As far as my opinion being in the minority, thats fine with me. I posted it because my feelings are strong, not because they are common.

I am not arguing against the movies creation, only my negative emotion currently attatched to the character has ruined my excitement. The fun of comics (and fiction in general) is in my suspension of disbelief, allowing the characters to be the jerks that they are.

Just as a note… I am still on Mighty Avengers. I just yell at the pages when he appears.

  12. Stark’s one of the most interesting characters Marvel has right now. His series hasn’t been great for awhile, but his role in WWH and the last Iron Man issue have been promising. It’s good that he’s taking responsibility for his actions (shooting Hulk into space), and putting himself in the firing line to get smashed instead of just sending SHIELD to do it or whatever which would be the dick move.

Stark has made some decisions that made him unpopular, but let’s compare him to Batman, as Josh did. Batman built the Brother Eye to spy on meta-humans and let that be the tool that almost destroyed the world, yet no readers are up in arms about how much they hate Batman now. And that’s not the first time Batman’s done things like that, back in Grant Morrison’s run on JLA his plan to take out the Justice League was revealed and he got kicked out of the team and again I don’t remember a big anti-Batman backlash then.

Anyway onto SLJ as Fury. Sounds good. We have to realize that the movies pick and choose what they want from all continuities anyway, so the fact that Nick Fury was pretty much cast by Millar and Hitch just made him an obvious choice.

I’m looking forward to the IM movie. Should be fun at the very least.

  13. I just can;t wait to see the IM suit in action…and see how they make the Mandarin into a plausible villain.

  14. I think this is a pretty cool idea, only because I’m a huge fan of the Ultimates series. I think this role will allow Mr. Jackson an opportunity to do what he does best: be a bad ass.

In regards to the Iron Man character, I tend to remove the comic continuity from my judgement of the movies only because movies very rarely follow them correctly. I’m only interested in seeing if they can adapt the character’s personality, abilities, and concept well enough that it makes a cohesive and engaging story.

That being said, I’m pretty excited for the movie. The pic of the armor looks cool and it’s got a great cast. It has potential written all over it.

The difference between what Batman did and what Iron Man did though is that secretly all DC fans want Batman to kill all the other DC characters.

“Yes I did! Yes I did.”

DAMN Josh, you had me and the wife laughing on this one. One thing though, all Sam’s lines should be in ALL CAPS. Cause, you know, he yells alot.

  17. Sam Jack- Nick Fu- Sam- Nick-

can’t finish post, mind scattered on floor.

We’re through the looking glass, people.

  18. This is off topic but did you guys see the “Dark Knight Returns” photos that were released today?
There’s a pic of Batman and two of the “Batpod” a weird looking motorcycle he rides.
Why isn’t there a thread on this Connor? hehe

  19. sam jack is great. I think he is the only actor who can pull off fury.
I just hope the movie is better than the cartoon movie they had.

  20. This is off topic but did you guys see the “Dark Knight” photos that were released today?

Yeah, absolutely amazing to the highest degree. Now if we could just get Rucka back on one of the Bat-books, I’d be happy.
