It was no surprise that after all the talk about The Walking Dead during and after its first season that the ratings were huge for the premiere of the second season. And it’s no surprise that after 11 million people checked out the premiere that a few would check back out. And so in its second week, viewership dropped from 7.3 to 6.7 million in the initial broadcast.
The good news is that at 6.7 million initial viewers, The Walking Dead is still the most watched show on basic cable–it’s got more than double the amount of viewers as the number two show–and when you take into account the 11pm re-airing, the total number of viewers jumps to 8.7 million, which is still a monster number for a basic cable show.
UPDATE: AMC has renewed The Walking Dead for a third season.

Thank you kind sir. I have no idea why I love it when Ron and Conor do this but it does.
the dip in 18-49 was pretty HUGE! I skipped it and didn’t hear great reviews. My friends (all non-comic readers) were bored to death in the last episode.
I’m surprised there was any drop at all to be honest. That cliffhanger at the end of the first one was a good one and everyone I know seemed to be talking about for the next few days.
Walking Dead is that show for my group of friends where all I have to say is “Did you see it?” and if it’s late Sunday night or anytime Monday or Tuesday they instantly know what I’m talking about.
The second highest rated non sports cable show? Jersey Shore.
You’re not going to find a show on tv (past, present, or future) that doesn’t get a dip after a season premiere. The fact that it held up this strong is still remarkable. With last week’s huge number, I was predicting at least a million drop off. And yes, still monsterous for a cable show.
Did it beat all the crappy reality shows? Man, those are ruining television.
The 2nd episode hardly had any zombie action in it at all. I’m thinking this may be a result of the budget cuts. If not, I really do not want to see another hour of characters talking it out over an injured loved one. If that’s what Walking Dead on TV is all about, I can find better ways to spend an hour in front of the tube.
But that’s the same thing the comic is about, if you’re expecting people to kill zombies all the time, then you don’t understand what the Walking Dead is about. And there were at least two or three episodes in season one with a lot less zombies than this one.

I watched right after the World Series game on Sunday was over otherwise I would have watched on the first airing of Walking Dead. Glad it got a 3rd season.
