PREVIEW: New Images from Jeff Lemire’s THE UNDERWATER WELDER

All of us have spent at least one summer welding things underwater. Or, actually, no, the vast majority of us haven’t. I spasm with anxiety trying to collect those multi-colored rings at the bottom of a pool. So welding things is out of the question.

Actually, welding things on land is out of the question too. The last time I asked my mechanic father if I could help with some welding down the garage, he said, “There isn’t enough insurance in the world. Go put air in those tires.”

This August, Jeff Lemire will make us believe a man can weld. Underwater. In a book called The Underwater Welder. If history has taught us anything, this OGN will make you cry on land, thus replicating the experience of being underwater. That’s beyond 3D. That’s LemireVision.

WARNING: CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE.

As an underwater welder on an oilrig off the coast of Nova Scotia, Jack Joseph is used to the immense pressures of deep-sea work. Nothing, however, could prepare him for the pressures of impending fatherhood. As Jack dives deeper and deeper, he seems to pull further and further away from his young wife and their unborn son. Then one night, deep in the icy solitude of the ocean floor, something unexplainable happens. Jack has a mysterious and supernatural encounter that will change the course of his life forever.

Equal parts blue-collar character study and mind-bending mystery, The Underwater Welder is a graphic novel about fathers and sons, birth and death, memory and reality, and the treasures we all bury deep below the surface.

Lemire posted some preview images on his blog along with some quotes from a few small-timers like Scott Snyder and Damon Lindelof. Here’s a couple to tide you over before hitting the link.

You know who should play him in the movie?

Ron Butterfield, that's who.

  6. I like the premise. I think I’ll be checking this out. As an aside: Last year I helped my dad weld bars to make a wrought iron fence for his yard. Good father-son bonding going on, beer and bulls—ing, etc.

  7. YESSSSS was just thinking about this when they announced the end of Sweet Tooth earlier this week. score!

  8. I’m drowning in excitement!

Lemire’s work has totally made a splash with me. It’s a shore thing I’ll be buying this when it hits the stands!

If you’re new to Lemire’s creator owned stuff and want to test the waters, be sure to check out Essex County and Lost Dogs.
You’ll sea what all the fuss is about.

  9. Code Blue! Get us to GW!

  10. I recently read Lost Dogs on Graphicly and it was terrific. Lemire knows how to tug on the heartstrings without being sappy about it and Underwater Welder will probably be no different.

  11. Great. Now I have a new book to buy AND I have to rewatch seasons 1-4 of West Wing.

  12. Looks awesome. Is it going to be coloured?
