October 18, 2006: Why must comics vex me so?

The shipping list is up — take a look and tell us what you’re going to be picking up this week!

I have high, high, high hopes that this week will be better than last week. It would be hard to be worse.

(Be advised, this thread is going to be closed to comments sometime on Wednesday.)

Here’s my list:

52 WEEK #24
BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK #3
BIRDS OF PREY #99
CHECKMATE #7
ROBIN #155
WOLVERINE #47
X-FACTOR #12
CSI: DYING IN THE GUTTERS #3
THE LONE RANGER #2
QUEEN & COUNTRY #31

Books I’m on the fence about buying:

THE AUTHORITY #1
WILDCATS #1

Comments

  1. AUTHORITY #1
    Deadman #3
    WILDCATS #1
IMPALER #1 (Image & missing from your list)
    CABLE DEADPOOL #33 $2.99
    CIVIL WAR X-MEN #4 (OF 4) $2.99
    CLAWS #3 (OF 3) $3.99
    DAILY BUGLE NOVEMBER NEWSPAPER
    ghost rider #4
    MS MARVEL #8 CW $2.99
    RUNAWAYS #21 $2.99
    ultimate ff #35
    UNION JACK #2 (OF 4) $2.99
    WOLVERINE #47 CW $2.99
    X-FACTOR #12 $2.99
    X-MEN FIRST CLASS #2 (OF 8) $2.99

You’re right. This week has got to be better than last. I give up if it isn’t. And yes I know that Claws will be horrible but it’s a 3 part story and I already bought the first two. Does that make me an asshole? Probably. Am I going to get burned on the Authority and Wildcats? Probably. But they can’t be as bad as Wetworks. That book made me envy both the blind and the illiterate. Civil War X-Men and Ms Marvel will underwhelm I’m sure but I figure screw it I’m in for this whole CW thing. I’m excited about Deadman, Wolverine, X-Men First Class, X-Factor, ghost rider, union jack, ultimate ff, and runaways. I have very high hopes for impaler.

  2. MS MARVEL #8
    RUNAWAYS #21
    WOLVERINE #47
    X-FACTOR #12

    maybe… but probably not:
    AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL #1
    CABLE DEADPOOL #33

This is probably a good week to remember which books I dropped, saying I was going to pick them up in trade, and see if those trades are out. Weekly shipping lists lately seem to be like a game of duck-duck-goose: three books, two books, three books, EMPTY YOUR CHECKING ACCOUNT.

I think, once it’s out in trade, I’m going to buy this X-Men: First Class. Have I been sniffing glue, or is that a valid purchase? Anyone on board so far?

  3. I HOPE this week is better. I was surprised by the list:

    52 #24
    CHECKMATE #7
    ROBIN #155
    RUNAWAYS #21
    UNION JACK #2
    WOLVERINE #47
    X-FACTOR #12
    QUEEN & COUNTRY #31

an okay size week for me (I’m an 8-12 book guy with the (more than) occassional trade. The surprise for me was that I had more Marvel books than DC. That almost never happens, and they’re not even Civil War tie-in buys. My bet for PoW for me is either Checkmate or Queen and Country. Two Rucka books? Heaven for Dustin!

I’ll also thumb through the OMEGA MEN (loved the book when I was young) and may consider the Fables hardcover (I read the book in trade and love it, but do I need an extra $20 book?).

I’m done with the FLASH. Done. Won’t buy it. And not the way that Ron doesn’t buy the crappy Moon Knight book.

  4. Jimski
X-Men First Class #1 was passable. It would be great if you aren’t too crazy about continuity. There were some issues in #1 with it. I’m continuing on for now and hopefully they iron out the problems or I just grow up and stop being such a baby.

  5. 52 WEEK #24
    AUTHORITY #1
BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK #3 (OF 6)
    DESOLATION JONES #7
    EXTERMINATORS #10
    WILDCATS #1
    GIRLS #18
    CABLE DEADPOOL #33
    RUNAWAYS #21
    ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #35
    X-FACTOR #12

And the Fables Hardcover through the internets.

I’m especially amped about Desolation Jones #7 and, surprisingly, Girls #18. For the longest while, Girls was on the top of my ‘to drop’ list, but the book really hit its stride around issue 10 or so. I don’t know what happened, but the deeper I got into the story, the more interesting it became, to the point that now, I actually really look forward to it everytime it comes out. Check out the first couple trades to see if it’s their thing. If nothing else, it has a lot of boobies, if that, you know, sways you at all.

(Wait, was that alienating to the female audience out there?)

And, seriously, don’t bother with the X-Men Civil War book. It’s so, so horrible on so many different levels. David Hine shouldn’t be allowed near the X-Men or the larger Marvel U.

  6. I was just reading that David Hine is going to write a miniseries about Black Bolt going to war against earth in a couple of months and thought, “That sounds really interesting; I hope someone else writes an Ultimate version of that in a few years so I can read it.”

  7. 52 WEEK #24
    AUTHORITY #1
FABLES 1001 NIGHTS OF SNOWFALL HC
    WILDCATS #1
    CIVIL WAR X-MEN #4
    RUNAWAYS #21
    ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #35
    WASTELAND #4

They should have released authority and wildcats before any of the other wildstorm relaunches because I think these books will be leaps and bounds better than the wetworks/gen 13 stuff, but now a lot of people are wary about going near any of that stuff.

i’ve been losing a lot of interest in the ultimate books lately. It seems like they’re all just going through the motions lately and have very little to be excited about.

  8. “They should have released authority and wildcats before any of the other wildstorm relaunches because I think these books will be leaps and bounds better than the wetworks/gen 13 stuff, but now a lot of people are wary about going near any of that stuff.”

I won’t even touch the Morrison Wildstorm stuff until it is
    a) traded and
    b) reviewed positively.

I love Morrison’s stuff (with a couple notable exceptions – no, new x-men is not one of them), but this Wildstorm relaunch has been so widely panned, I’m not touching it until I hear it stands up months later.

  9. Conor doesn’t read CW Wolverine? But it’s so good!

  10. 52 WEEK #24 $2.50
    AUTHORITY #1 (MR) $2.99
    EXTERMINATORS #10 (MR) $2.99
    ROBIN #155 $2.99

    LAST CHRISTMAS #4 (OF 5) (MR) $2.99
    NOBLE CAUSES #24 $3.50
    SAVAGE DRAGON #129 $2.99

    AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL #1 $2.99
ANITA BLAKE VH GUILTY PLEASURES #1 (OF 12) $2.99
    CABLE DEADPOOL #33 $2.99
    CIVIL WAR X-MEN #4 (OF 4) $2.99
    MS MARVEL #8 CW $2.99
    RUNAWAYS #21 $2.99
    ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #35 $2.99
    WOLVERINE #47 CW $2.99

    X-MEN FIRST CLASS #2 (OF 8) $2.99

JOHN WOOS SEVEN BROTHERS CVR COMBINE #1 $2.99
    WORMWOOD GENTLEMAN CORPSE #3 $3.99

I started reading X-Factor #12 from the sneak peaks, and I need to re-read this series before I read this issue i think, a lot of plot points converge in this issue, and i was scratching my head a little. It’s a pretty lame week though, aside from Wolverine and Robin, there’s nothing I’m looking forward too all that much

  11. 52 Week #24
    Birds of Prey #99
    Checkmate #7
    Omega Men #1
    Shadowpact #6
    Ultimate Fantastic Four #35

It’s an ok week for me, but nothing really that special coming out.

I was going to pick up Wildcats, but all the delays put me off.

  12. I’ll probably take home less than this, but if they’ve got them, I’ll buy ’em.
    52 WEEK #24
BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK #3
FLASH THE FASTEST MAN ALIVE #5
CIVIL WAR X-MEN #4 (though I should know better but I’ve got that damn completist gene)
    ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #35
    WOLVERINE #47
HIGHLANDER #1 – I’m really hoping my store overran their order for this because it sounds like a lot of fun. I had a writing teacher in high school who showed Highlander shows near the end of the semester. He was second only to my art teacher who showed Evil Dead at Halloween, Christmas Vacation before the holiday break, and Ferris Beuller’s Day Off before school got out.
LONE RANGER #2 – This is the one I’m most looking forward to. The first ish was a lot better than I expected.

  13. All I care about this week is getting my hands on the new Queen and Country.

  14. DC

    52 Week #24 $2.50
    Authority Vol 4 #1 Reg Cover $2.99
    Birds Of Prey #99 $2.99
    Checkmate #7 $2.99
    Robin #155 $2.99
    Shadowpact #6 $2.99
    Wildcats Vol 4 #1 Reg Cover $2.99

    Image

    Casanova #5 $1.99
    Noble Causes #24 $3.50

Why am I the only person here getting Cassanova? Oh this is becoming a voicemail…

  15. IMPALER #1 (Image & missing from your list)

It’s not on the list because it has been pushed back to next week.

  16. Conor doesn’t read CW Wolverine? But it’s so good!

Dude, sober up and reread the list.

  17. arrrgh

  18. “Why am I the only person here getting Cassanova? Oh this is becoming a voicemail…”

I bought the first issue and didn’t like it. What do you like about it? I’m willing to be convinced… I want to like this Fraction guy because he is going to be writing Iron Fist.

  19. I read the first Cassanova too, but I didn’t like it. But it was too much cool attitude, not enough interesting story.

  20. By the way, who’s got the pick? I’s got the pick.

WILDCATS #1 (to say I loved Casey’s abandoned run is an understatement. This book has only this issue to impress me.)
    52 WEEK #24
    CHECKMATE #7
HELLBLAZER #225 (this one better pick up real soon)
    QUEEN & COUNTRY #31
    ROBIN #155
    RUNAWAYS #21
    WOLVERINE #47 CW
    X-FACTOR #12

  21. 52 WEEK #24
BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK #3
    CHECKMATE #7
SANDMAN #1 SPECIAL EDITION (MR) $0.50
    MS MARVEL #8
    X-FACTOR #12
    DAMNED #1

Kind of a slow week, so I’m probably going to check out The Damned from Oni, despite my skepticism about genre mash-ups: they seem to work better as ideas than in execution. But if you’re going to mash-up anything, demons and ’30s gangster noir is about as in-line with my tastes as it’ll get. Plus the previews look nice. The Fables HC will be purchased at some point, most likely through one of this site’s Fine Sponsors. I’ve never read a word of Sandman, so can’t pass up a cheap taste – kinda the same idea of a crack dealer, really. First hit’s free, and then they get ya on the “come back”.

  22. REX MUNDI DH ED #2

    100 BULLETS #77 (MR)
    52 WEEK #24
    AUTHORITY #1 (MR)
    CHECKMATE #7
    DEADMAN #3 (MR)
    DESOLATION JONES #7 (MR)
    EXTERMINATORS #10 (MR)
FABLES 1001 NIGHTS OF SNOWFALL HC (MR)
    SANDMAN #1 SPECIAL EDITION (MR)
    SHADOWPACT #6
    TESTAMENT #11 (MR)
    WILDCATS #1

    TABULA RASA #1

    MARVEL 1602 FANTASTICK FOUR #2 (OF 5)
    RUNAWAYS #21
    ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #35
    X-FACTOR #12

    DAMNED #1 (MR)
    HIGHLANDER #1
    LONE RANGER #2
    RED SONJA #15
    WASTELAND #4 (MR)

Big big week. 22 monthlies and a HC. And I have high expectations for many of the books on that list. Book of the week is going to be the Fables HC, no doubt in my mind. The art on that is gorgeous and the premise sounds great. Also very much looking forward to Rex Mundi, Desolation Jones, Runaways, Tabula Rasa, Wasteland, and all the usual Vertigo books. Morbidly curious about Authority and Wildcats, like everyone else. Loser of the week is going to be UFF I’m sure. That book is just awful right now, along with the rest of the Ultimate line (Ultimates excepted of course). I think this is my last issue of that title coming though, so I won’t have to put up with it much longer.

I also got the first couple issues of Casanova. I read the first one and didn’t really like it but picked up the second one anyway. I didn’t even finish the second one. I read maybe half and was so apathetic about it I put it down and never picked it back up.

  23. I will NEVER sober up, MISTER.

  24. AUTHORITY #1
    CHECKMATE #7
    CIVIL WAR X-MEN #4
    MS MARVEL #8
    RUNAWAYS #21
    WOLVERINE #47
    X-FACTOR #1

Looks like another Civil War heavy week. Fred, if you are an asshole for picking up all three issues of Claws, I am a bigger asshole for picking up all four issues of Civil War X-Men. This titled has had terrible art, a terrible plot and no significant connection to Civil War, yet I bought all four issues. Why can’t I walk away from a bad limited series? I don’t know what I am expecting from the Authority. I feel the making-superheroes-socially-relevant story telling, that originally made the title interesting, is now being done in a variety of other comics. I never felt especially engaged by the characters. So I guess I am buying it this time around to see if they are going to bring something new to the comics table. If it doesnt, I am not sticking around very long. I read enough superhero comics. Remember when Wildstorm had a certain edge that no one else had? Five years ago, in general, there were a lot of kick ass Wildstorm comics. What happened?

  25. I am also an asshole for continuing to buy Civil War X-Men and Origins if you really must know. I have the same problem with limited series books and it also extends to movies. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve started a movie and realized it was shit 10 minutes in but kept going anyway because I’m already watching it. It’s like some kind of weird ocd thing or something. Damn them, stop me because I can’t.

  26. if i’ve started a miniseries that’s less than five issues, i’ll end up picking it up even if its garbage. with x-men civil war i’m hoping that there’s something in the last issue that will actually matter in civil war, like the x-men firmly choosing a side or something.

  27. small week for us…
    I’m getting
Wildcats #1, Civil War X-men, Wolverine and killing Moon Knight, Rachel is getting 52 and Anita Blake.

I hope Wildcats is good and my wife has been looking forward to Anita Blake forever!

  28. What Jerome? You don’t like their guidance councilor approach? Not choosing is the same thing as choosing because you actually chose not to chose.

Yeah, me neither. I mean I guess you can say that individual members have chosen obviously but not the true core which I agree sucks.

  29. I kinda like the X-Men being neutral in Civil War. We don’t need any of those stinking muties ruining this crossover. The scene when White Queen told Tony the X-Men were staying out of the fighting was one of the best moments in Civil War. Keeping the X-Men out of it lets the series stand forward as an Avengers story. I think the mutants can share the spotlight for a little while.

So did anyone like anything in Civil War X-Men?

  30. My month of light weeks continues! Here’s my diminutive stack…
Fables: 1,001 Nights of Snowfall HC
    52 Week 24
    Checkmate #7
Civil Wardrobe (maybe… I’ll have to look through it)

So that’s all! I’m looking forward to the Fables hardcover and checkmate myself. We’ll see how it all turns out

  31. “So did anyone like anything in Civil War X-Men?”

i liked the idea of teaming up the original x-team back in issue one. the execution… not so much.

  32. the staples that they used were very fine. I applaud you Marvel.

  33. AUTHORITY #1 (MR) $2.99
    OMEGA MEN #1 (OF 6) $2.99…maybe
    WILDCATS #1 $2.99
    LAST CHRISTMAS #4 (OF 5) (MR) $2.99
    TABULA RASA #1 $4.99
    CIVIL WAR X-MEN #4 (OF 4) $2.99

I’ve got a relatively light week, so I was thinking of picking up the first trade of a series to start catching up. I’m thinking Fables, Powers, or just getting the second Captain America trade that came out last week. Any suggestions?

  36. Strange girl Volume 1 from Image. It’s awesome.
Please buy this book. They’ve had 11 or 12 issues so far. There are 2 trades and 2 issues after the second trade. The knock on it initially was that the artist was slow and it didn’t come out regularly. The artist has been replaced and it is now monthly. It is an Image book. It may be hard to get if you don’t subscribe and you go to a smaller comic shop but ORDER IT. It’s awesome.
It takes place 10 years after the Rapture. The Rapture, for those of you who don’t know, is this thing from the Bible where at the end of days or whatever God takes all the good people into heaven and leaves the bad or less good people on Earth to be ruled by demons. Sounds strange I know. The book follows the story of a girl named Bethany who is trying to essentially escape to heaven or whatever safety she can find. It is amazing. Please buy this book. It will be a devastating loss to comics if this were cancelled and I never hear anyone else mention it. It wasn’t even in the top 100 for september and people should be reading it. How the hell is Origins number 12?

  37. i’ll be sure to give strange girl a try on my next slow week. i’m always interested in books with biblical ties or that reference stuff in the bible. is it a limited run ala y the last man or preacher or is it ongoing indefinitely?

anything wolverine is destined to be a top seller, but i’m proud to say origins hasn’t taken any of my money. i leave that to civil war x-men.

  38. CABLE & DEADPOOL #33
    CIVIL WAR: X-MEN #4
    ROBIN #155
    WILDCATS #1
    X-FACTOR #12

I also might check out some back issues of DMZ. I’m starting to dip my toe into Vertigo books, and picked up Y: The Last Man Vol. 1 and Fables Vol. 1 last week. I liked them both, and the premise of DMZ sounds interestings. I also might look into Jack of Fables.

  39. I’m not entirely sure how long it’s supossed to run but I don’t think, from a story perspective, that it could be indefinite. I think that anything over 60 would be sure to be stale.

  40. “I also might check out some back issues of DMZ. I’m starting to dip my toe into Vertigo books, and picked up Y: The Last Man Vol. 1 and Fables Vol. 1 last week. I liked them both, and the premise of DMZ sounds interestings. I also might look into Jack of Fables.”

I’d pick up the first DMZ trade; it reads a lot better in trade format, and its a cheap one too – $9.99 i think. Jack of Fables is 3 issues in, and although great, I’d reccommend that you catch up a bit further with Fables before you start on Jack of Fables.
