It seems like there's always some late breaking story out of Hollywood on Friday night and tonight is no exception.
Deadline and its sister site TVLine are reporting that after months of "will he/won't he" reports, Michael Rosenbaum will return as Lex Luthor is the series finale of Smallville on May 13th.
Rosenbaum played Lex Luthor for seven seasons on Smallville and as the show entered its tenth and final season, fans (and one suspects, producers) began to wonder if Rosenbaum would return for the finale. Much like the speculation surrounding George Clooney and his return to ER, it seemed like every week there was a new report on the status of a possible return by Rosenbaum. "He's done with the show." "He's thinking about it." "He's moved on." "Tom Welling got him drunk and made a case for him to come back." "He's run out of razors blades." No one knew what to think and as late as Friday morning the report was that he would definitely not be coming back for the finale.
In the story on Deadline, Rosenbaum has said of his return, "I'm simply doing it for all of the fans out there who made Smallville the great success it is. II appreciate all of their passion, their relentlessness and even their threats. Ha ha. I can't wait to hug the old crew back in Vancouver one last time and see all of my old friends once again….. Oh, and for Lex to become the badass he's destined to be."
Fans of the show will no doubt welcome back Rosenbaum, who was always the best actor on the show. It is fitting that he will be back to close out the show and pit Lex Luthor against, hopefully, Superman. It wouldn't have been right to end 10 years without Clark's greatest enemy.

YESSSSSS!!!!!! He was/is definitely the best actor on the show. I’m so glad he is coming back. I wonder if it’s going to be him or the clone Lex? Either way I’m glad he decided to close out the show. I wonder if his final words in the show will be, “Otisburg? Otisburg!!!”

So excited for this. The episode where he split into two Luthors, his evil Luthor is still my favorite characterization of him in live action.

I do not care if it is just like the Clooney return for ER where it is just screen time. He has been the best live action Lex that has ever appeared (Clancy Brown rocks!) and it is great for him to return.
I hope they show him with a beard and long hair for the first minute or two before he shaves it all off. A nice little nod to how Luthor came back from death in comics once before.

awsome, I am so happy, i am just hoping its not a clone, i want it to be the real lex, its just not the same if its not. now i know kristen kruek said she wont be back but i still need them to wrap up her story cause last time we checked she had super powers and was giving off kryptonite radiation so thats gotta get fixed or i will be pist……so happy michael is comming back!!!
@marshak75 Yes, because over the last three years or so, Rosenbaum has repeatedly said that he was done with the show. That, coupled with the show’s relatively small budget, made it seem as if something might not be able to be worked out.
I share in the joy that he’s coming back, even if it’s tinged with the disappointment that it’s just for one episode. Still confused about why he was so against doing the show; I guess he wanted to avoid being identified with this role?
@LEXPRIME – I think that her being infused with kryptonite and never able to come near Clark again is pretty wrapped up.

@MikePositive i dont, in the comics i dont believe lana has any powers, and i think that should be the same here, it wont ruin the show for me but it would be nice if she went back to normal, but getting lex back is more important so i am still happy about that 🙂

Glad he’s coming back. Lana can stay gone fo all I care. Plus, bringing her back now would get in the way of the Clark/Lois relationship. Good riddance I say.
Michael Rosenbaum is a great actor and the definitive Alexander “Lex” Luthor in my opinion and even more so then Gene Hackman. Thank you CW and Mr.Rosenbaum for giving us Smallville fans a fitting series Finale for the hero that started it all. Now if you can also show a quick glimpse of The Batman. My all time favorite Hero even in flash of lighting that would be the best ending ever.
I was getting scared he actually wasn’t going to return. Now I can stop imagining the disaster the last episode would have been with another actor. It seemed like they were going to have an easier time getting Gene Hackman to reprise the role.

I loved the show the first 5 seasons or so, but lost interest after that. Maybe an error on my part.
Either way I’ll def be checking out the series finale now that Lex is returning.
Curious how much they paid to get him and if he’ll shave his head.

Didn’t read about this until this morning. Awesome! There’s no way they could have ended the show without him.
Rosenbaum will catch on again somewhere. I keep hoping he will go back to a comedic role because he is brilliant with comedies….Maybe people keep identifying him with Smallville, but they are missing out.
