Marvel’s Next Big Thing: Jason Aaron’s Final Arc on Wolverine Begins with #300

Today we had another Marvel press call, this time we were talking to Jason Aaron, currently the best at making Wolverine the best at what he does.

In 2012, Wolverine celebrates 300 years in publication. Wait, that can’t be right. Let’s call it 300 issues in his ongoing solo title. That’s right. Wolverine #300 hits shelves in January.

This is the start of Aaron’s final arc on the series.

Stay tuned for more as it happens. Aaron calls it the biggest Wolverine story he’s ever done featuring all-out war between the Hand and the yakuza. Naturally it’s all set in Japan. You may recall that Silver Samurai died in Aaron’s Wolverine #1. In #300 we will meet his successor, the original’s long lost son.

But that’s not the only major return. Sabertooth is back. In one piece, even! How does he regain his head? You’ll have to grab issue #300 to find out.

We asked Aaron about his inspiration and approach to writing these sprawling action sequences. He points to Hong Kong action films and writing to the strengths of each of his calibrators including Adam Kubert, Ron Garney and Stephen Sanders. He also cites previous Wolverine in Japan tales by Miller and Claremont in particular.

Asked about Aaron’s overall take on the character now that his tenure with the series is winding to a close, he and editor Janine Schaefer spoke to Wolverine’s versatility. Aaron says he’s been able to tell many different kinds of stories with the character. He can’t pinpoint a particular highlight, but he does say he’s proud of the darkness the team’s been able to explore. The most recent arc involving underground drug wars and dragons was a fun serial to write and played to his strengths. He also has some “new toys” to play with in later projects.

Now, how’s about a preview of Wolverine #300, including wraparound cover art from Geof Darrow!

  1. What? Arron leaving Wolverine? Well, at least I’ll save some money…

  2. Wait… I thought Jeph Loeb was bringing back Sabertooth in his next Wolverine story… Is this a last minute editorial change in plans? Or is it a cop out and its a new Sabertooth?

  3. Aaron is leaving Wolverine (solo) but is still writing Wolverine & The X-Men…I would be thrilled if he got to write an Avengers book post-Bendis.

  4. I haven’t bought an issue of Wolverine since Millar and JRJr. I think I’ll have to jump on board for this.

  5. I’m hoping for a Wolverine vs. Shunka throwdown.

  6. I wish there really was an airline that had meal carts w/ ninja swords.

  7. It’s funny… I always forget how awesome the Kuberts are… I take them for granted too much…

  8. So he’s off Wolverine. PunisherMAX is almost over and Scalped is wrapping up soon too (I believe). So what’s he up to next? I hope some new creator owned work.

  9. Damn just when i start really enjoying a book , they go and make some changes. Well i hope the new writer can at least keep up the great job that Jason has done with this book.

  10. Shit.

    Had ta end sometime, bub.

Thank you Jason, for making me remember all the reasons Logan is my second-favorite superhero of all time. Before you came along, I was beginning to forget. I’ll always be grateful for that.

  11. Ahhh crapppp first Punisher Max and now Wolverine is going to end soon? When will the Jason Aaron bad news end?! Well at least he will continue on Wolverine and the X-Men i hope, ive enjoyed his whole run on Wolverine and will probably end up dropping it when hes done.

  12. I kind of guessed this was coming based on some of Aaron’s recent interviews, Still I’m sorry to see this confirmed.

Wolverine is that one character for me that we all have, the one from when we first started reading comics that will always be our favourite, and Aaron has done some of the best Wolverine work of all time. In fact, Aaron’s Wolverine: Weapon X got me back into monthlies a few years back; I had been sticking to trades before that.

I wonder if we will see new Marvel titles from him or if Incredible Hulk and Wolverine & the X-Men are taking the place of Wolverine and Punishermax?

Hopefully what comes next on Wolverine will be strong. As much as I am a fan, I have to admit that quality runs on the character tend to be few and far between.

  13. Yes. YES. A million times, yes!
