Mars Forever! New ‘John Carter’ (of Mars) Trailer

A few days ago, Disney released a new trailer for John Carter (of Mars).

My sister has an interesting theory on the movie that she shared with me today:

“Here’s how I see it. The (actual) Civil War was Part 1 in the Riggins Trilogy. Friday Night Lights was Part 2. And now John Carter is the final chapter. I couldn’t care less about plot, character development, or any other semi-important things. All I know from this trailer is that Riggins will be carrying a sword, often shirtless, his hair will be perfectly Riggins-esque, and I will enjoy this movie. That’s all that really matters. Mars Forever.”

That’s good enough for me to see it.

If you’re interested in checking out some John Carter comics, there are some available on Graphicly:

Comments

  1. I never read any of the books, but the film has a great look. It’s an interesting set up.

  2. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Very, very excited for this movie. Next year’s gonna be a great time at the movies.

  3. This new trailer definitely has me pumped for this one. I love the scale of what we’re seeing.

  4. looks expensive

  5. I’m happy for my 3D phone for once. Looks cool.

  6. Since my first viewing of this trailer on youtube, I’ve thought the actor playing John Carter was Timothy Olyphant. :/ Kinda changed the frame of this movie slightly (so minute). Been excited for this film since the first trailer so that didn’t stop the giddy.

  7. I’d think Riggings and McNulty would get on quite well I don’t know about Sinestro though. Imaginary crossover aside, this looks like it could be fun.

  8. I’m very excited for this film. People don’t seem to realize that it’s being directed by Andrew (Wall-E, Finding Nemo) Stanton. His first live action film, and the script is adapted by Stanton, Mark Andrews and Michael Chabon. A writer many people around here like.

This was supposed to be Pixar’s first live action film, and from my understanding, it kind of is. The only reason, at the end of the day this is “Disney’s John Carter” and not “Pixar’s John Carter” is they knew it’d be be PG-13, and weren’t sure how people would feel about a PG-13, violent Pixar film. But it was made in the same fashion as all the other Pixar films from the creative standpoint. All of them (Lassater, Docter, etc) being involved in pre-production and getting the film ready. Stanton has been talking about this film since Wall-E. I’m very excited.

Also for those curious, the first five novels are free on Amazon Kindle.

  9. Five minutes ago, I couldn’t have cared less about John Carter of Mars and that it was getting some sort of movie.

But damn, that looks cool, and the more I find out about it, the more interested I am. Considering Wall-E is one of my favorite movies ever, I cannot resist the pull of another sci-fi project from Andrew Stanton.

  10. Wow. I used to make fun of this property cuz of its original title: *John Carter – A Princess of Mars.* (hahaha!) But damn. Great fx, great action scenes, sexy shirtless actor (if Conor’s sis needs someone to see it with her and drool, I will) and best of all? Knowing that Michael Chabon had something to do with the script makes me slightly optimistic that this film won’t suck dogballs like “Immortals” did. This is a nice surprise.

    • “Immortals” was ok if only for the nearly nekkid sexy men and the art direction. If Hollywood is going to do the story of Theseus again, they should adapt the great novels about him by Mary Renault.

  11. The background music sounds like Led Zepplin’s “Kashmir.”

  12. I think I’ll go see this one.

  13. I worry that this will be about the same quality of movie as the “prince of persia” movie. But if we are lucky, maybe it might be as good as the firt “pirates of the caribbean”

  14. I am an absolute fanatic about the first three John Carter novels (those are the best in the 12-book series). So I’m torn between ultimate excitement for one of my favorite stories coming to the big screen, and humungo doubt that what I’m seeing has anything to do with the original story. I like this second trailer, and I’m confident Stanton will make a great film, but it’ll take a little more to convince me this version holds a candle to the essence of Burrough’s books.

And BTW, I respect your opinion Jurassicalien, however, even though Nemo is my favorite Pixar film, it’s full of violence. The threat of death occurs every five minutes: Barracudas, sharks, whales, jellyfish, filter blades, suffocation, “shaking the bag”, crabs, seagulls… and the big one: the loss of a son and parent. Pixar has evolved with the times. They’ve been doing PG-13s since then, aside from maybe Wall-E.

  15. I look forward to this. A very fun book. The first three novels are great, if you like action, lo-grav duels & airships.

I hope to see John Carter, Dejah Thoris and Tars Tarkas weaving a web of steely death, cleaving through the ranks of their enemies, and selling their lives dearly. For ERB’s sake.

  16. The more I see, the better and better this looks. I’m REALLY looking forward to this. Loved the novels as a youth.

  17. Everytime i look at this trailer I can see Fear Agent. From the battles to the costumes with Fur on their shoulders
