MAD MAGAZINE Lampoons DC Reboot…All the Way From 1999

Cub reporter Jeff Reid sent this one in just before marrying a gorilla. Luckily for he and his human wife, the proper papers were never filed for that bit of monkey business. I remain emperor of the world, but I do respond to the signal from his watch.

Anyways, Mad Magazine has some thoughts about the reboot happening one short elevator ride from their own New York offices. Thing is, they made comment on it over a decade ago. Here's Jeff with the history lesson.

"I stumbled upon this while flipping through a Mad collection and thought I'd pass it your way. It's from an article titled "If Truth in Advertising Laws Applied to Comic Book Previews," which was originally published in Mad #382, June 1999. The article is just a few pages of fake previews and it makes fun of various comic book sales goosing tropes like killing off characters and having Wolverine guest star in everything. Of particular interest to modern fans is that Amanda Conner did the art in this article. Barry Liebmann wrote it, but I have no idea who that is."

Thanks, Jeff!

Comments

  1. I’m guessing Bob Kane stopped spinning.

  2. Maybe Bill Finger is spining now that there will be TWO Detective Comics #27 on which he is uncredited.  Assuming that the new numbering lasts that long.

  3. Any scans for the rest of the article? Or do we need to plunge into the darker corners of the internet?

  4. Avatar photo Jeff Reid (@JeffRReid) says:

@nick7913  If it helps, the article was reprinted in Mad About Super Heroes. Unfortunately, it’s out of print but if you can find that collection, you can find this article.

  5. Isn’t Mad Magazine owned by DC Comics anyway?

  6. I owned that issue, but I can’t for the life of me remember the rest of the “article.” I just remember that look on the Joker’s face. HA!

  7. @jonnyflash  Right?!

  8. Half of the rest of the article was “Death of Superman” jokes.

  9. life imitates art

  10. It looks like that star is actually on Batman’s boot.

I’m guessing Bats had a sleepover and put on the wrong boots in the morning 😛
