Light Week? Try Proof #1, Garrison #1, and Random Acts of Violence

Sometimes you look down at that pull list that you just made and you realize there aren't many books on it and that you've got a light week! And that just won't do! You can't go all the way down to the comic book store for just a handful of books. It's at times like these that you need some suggestions on new comics to try. Well, luckily, we're here for you.

Ron says try:

Image Firsts: Proof #1

By Alexander Grecian & Riley Rossmo

We're going to look back at the latter part of the first decade of the 2000s as a great time for creator owned comics, and one of the first titles that heralded this era will be remembered as Proof.  Thanks to the Image Comics program leading up to Free Comic Book Day offering the first issues of their popular titles for just ONE DOLLAR, now you can read the first issue that used Cryptozoology to capture our imaginations and introduce us to the amazing art work of Riley Rossmo.  With only 26 issues published so far, it's still easy to get on board and the there's no better jumping on point than issue #1.  Plus, it's just ONE DOLLAR! You've got no excuse!

Josh says try:

Garrison #1

By Jeff Mariotte & Francesco Francavilla

I know almost nothing about this title, other than the cover and art is by Francesco Francavilla, an artist whose work I've grown to appreciate wholly from his sketches on the web, and word of mouth.  There's a tough, cowboy looking dude, and the book is set in the future.  Wildstorm does some really good offbeat series, so this one is a must-try.  I could probably learn more, but then if it's awesome, I'll go in completely clean, and I love that.

Conor says try:

Random Acts of Violence

Random Acts of Violence

By Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Grey & Giancarlo Caracuzzo

I know nothing about this mini original graphic novel from Image Comics. I wasn't even planning on getting it, originally. But then I saw the creative team and realized that I couldn't remember the last time that I read something from the writing team of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Grey that I didn't at least like, if not love. I love Jonah Hex. I love Power Girl. I really liked The Last Resort. And Giancarlo Caracuzzo was the artist on The Last Resort. If there is any creative team out there that can transcend mindless violence and turn it into something fun, funny, and entertaining, it's the team on this book.

Comments

  1. Super excited for Random Acts, and will certainly pick up Garrison

  2. For Proof I would say just get the trade, cause if you get issue #1, you’re gonna, wanna and will buy the trades.

    I’m really excited about  Garrison.

  3. RE: Garrison # 1

I totally agree with you Josh. I have been waiting for this issue, based solely on the amazing art by Francesco on comic Twart. I have also gone back to grab his past works.

And Wildstorm has indeed had a good track record with stories off the beaten path.

    Automatic buy.

  4. I didn’t have a light week to begin with, and now it just got 3 buys heavier.

  5. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Very excited to get my hands on Garrison #1.

  6. Just pulled Random Acts Of Violence after reading this.

  7. Garrison looks interesting, wonder if my shop will get it.

  8. I’m hungry. What do you suggest? Ohwait-wrongarticle xD.

But seriously, people should try Airgear from Viz. Fantastic story up until #220 so you got a long way before you get sick of it like Spider-man in the Clone Saga.

  9. Usually I am pretty meh on the titles suggested here, but all of these are really tempting.  If only I ddin’t already have like 6 books this week.

  10. My wallet likes my pull list anemic. They are not on good terms.

  11. Garrison #1 is the book I am most excited for this week! Also I know nothing of the plot.
