Light Week? Try ALPHA GIRL #1, AMERICAN VAMPIRE VOL. 3, & XOMBI

We fill the sequential void. With comic book recommendations.

Ron says try…

Alpha Girl #1

By by Jean-Paul Bonjour & Jeff Roenning, Robert Love, Dana Shukartsi, & Diego Simone

Looking for a fun, new comic? Try Alpha Girl #1, a teenage girl fighting zombies in the mid 1980s. If that doesn’t sound like fun, then I don’t know what is.

Josh says try…

American Vampire, Vol. 3 HC

By Scott Snyder, Rafael Albuquerque, & Sean Murphy

You all know about Scott Snyder. Fine. Point made. The focus of this recommendation is about the artists. Between Sean Murphy and Rafael Albuquerque, you’ve got two of the absolute best talent in all of comics. Albuquerque’s pages flow like liquid masterpiece, from scary monsters to sexy people, to WWII Axis vampires in the Pacific Theater. Different, but equally magnificent, Murphy takes the story to Europe where the Nazis have their own vampires. From castles to motorcycles to giant leviathan vampires, there isn’t a page of Murphy’s work on this volume that didn’t make new and veteran comic book artists question their talent. If you haven’t read these books, you haven’t seen how it should be done.

Conor says try…

Xombi TP

By John Rozum, Frazer Irving, and Scott Hampton

I’m not even sure that I can reliably tell you what Xombi is about. It is weird. But it’s good weird. Part sci-fi, part fantasy, part action-adventure, part comedy, and all gorgeous. David Kim is Xombi. He’s a man who was infused with experimental nanotechnology that renders him indestructible and potentially immortal. He’s got a bunch of wacky friends and some even wackier adversaries. And I say “wacky” in the best possible Grant Morrison sense.

Comments

  1. I was reading the solicit for Alpha Girl and it sounded really interesting… up until they mention Zombies in the last sentence. It completely lost me there. Is this the only concpet that creators can come up with to spice up their books? Is it asking too much for them to try something different?

    • In an effort to bring some positivity: I will definitely be picking up American Vampire HC 3 and Xombi is seriously worth checking out if you didn’t read it in issues

    • As evident by the mention of Snyder and American Vampire, different creators bring different views on existing genres. I think the industry could use more horror titles. I’ve been looking forward to Alpha Girl. A badass girl fighting zombies in the 80s… I’m all over that! But different strokes for different folks.

  2. I had no idea that the American Vampire collection included Survival of the Fittest. That’s incredible. I was expecting it to get it’s own seperate collection.

  3. Where in the world is Frazer Irving? I need more new Frazer Irving art in my life.
