Kevin Colden’s A Clockwork Orange

For a good, long portion of my teens and twenties, if you asked me what my favorite film was, I'd have said A Clockwork Orange. Sure, I was being a little snooty, artsy-fartsy, but at the same time, it's a hell of a piece of work, both in Stanley Kubrick's film version, and the original novel by Anthony Burgess.

Kevin Colden (Fishtown, I Rule The Night), who has a fantastic mustache, says of his dream project, "for many years now, I've wanted to adapt Anthony Burgess' classic novel A Clockwork Orange into comics form."

Recently, he shared some pages he did as a proof of concept on his blog. Suffice to say, I would buy the razoodocks out of this book.

Bonus Question: Without looking it up, how old is Alex in the book?

Comments

  1. I think he’s 17, but I could be blurring the book and movie together…

  2. @srh1son  Nope.

  3. Literally, 17 popped into my head before i read srh1son’s post, so yeah 17!

  4. Would it come with a dictionary? This looks great. Nice cover too. Would be an interesting read esp. if he kept it with that structured grid.

@srh1son  –i think he’s 15 when it starts and 18 when it ends. Of course the 21 chapters being very meaningful.

  5. i’m liking it.
    and i love structured grids

  6. It’s all about the milk plus and ultra violence

  7. By the way, bonus question is mine, in the book he is 15 (film 17)

  8. Holy crap, that looks awesome.  Can’t wait!

  9. looks great. hope he’s able to continue. I would pitch in a few bucks at Kickstarter.

@josh, care to share what your elder, wiser, yet possibly still snooty/artsy-fartsy choice for favorite film is now?

  10. @citizenmilton  Jaws and/or Goodfellas.

  11. Wow.  Yeah, I’d buy this.  That’s great looking stuff.

  12. @josh  Jaws is always the answer.

For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

  13. @josh is he 15 or 16, jesus it’s been forever since i read that book.

  14. 15 years old !  Favorite story of all time!!!!

  15. 14 I believe.

  16. wow, that is awesome. really

  17. Jaws and Goodfellas aren’t really snooty are they? A Clockwork Orange is artsy fartsy because it has strong surrealist elements and because it is Kubrick, who didn’t really care if films made sense or not (2001 A Space Odessey) the craft is what was important to him. Nowadays, because of the box office you gotta have a coherent plot, even Spielberg. I guess artsy fartsy is only university students who do black and white sexual exploration pieces.

  18. Now the real question is would this version feature the final chapter?  Kubrick never used the last chapter of the novel as it was cut by the publisher for the US printing because it was longer than they wanted.  I personally interept Alex as being around 19.  Granted he rapes two girls that in the book are apparently 13.  Kubrick depicted them as over 18 with lolli pops and had a threesome to the tune of William Tell.

  19. This needs to happen!

  20. 14

  21. i have to be honest i HATED the film and could barely make it through a page of the book. nice looking art though.

  22. @ Jordan – I agree he is an artsy fartsy kinda cat, but 2001 did make sense. It was mostly about evolution of humans, in a quick broad sentence. It was one giant metaphor after another. Also a great movie 😉
