The heretofore most unlikeliest of Marvel Studios films finally has a writer and director, confirmed by the man himself on Twitter today.
Yep, for those of your wondering, I am directing and rewriting Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and I couldn’t be more stoked.
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) September 18, 2012
Writer/director James Gunn has been kicking around Hollywood for a while now, and is a well known name within those circles, if not with the general public.
Joss Whedon himself blessed the choice of Gunn just a week ago in an interview with MTV:
James is what makes me think it will work. I myself was sort of like, “Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I’m not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].” And then they said, “Well, we’re thinking about using James Gunn.” And I said, “Oh, then no, you’re fine.” He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon. This is the guy who wrote The Specials. People don’t understand how influential that movie was about heroes, about taking heroes and making them mundane. And [he directed] Super.
He has a very twisted take on [the Guardians of the Galaxy film], but it all comes from a real love for the material. It’s going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he’s going to come from left field and I’m going to go, “What?” And then, “Of course, why didn’t I think of that?” And then I’m going to beat him!
Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to hit screens August 1, 2014, and will feature Drax, Groot, Starlord, Gamora, and Rocket Raccoon.
James Gunn will be appearing at MorrisonCon later this month in Las Vegas appearing on the CELLULOID HEROES: COMICS’ LOVE AFFAIR WITH HOLLYWOOD panel talking movies, will he discuss the upcoming movie? We’ll see!
You had me at Groot.
I wish this came out in August 1, 2012. This is going to be one marvelous movie.
Good, I thought I’d missed it!
Nathan Fillion in for Star Lord.
Rainn Wilson in for voice of RR.
Michael Rooker in for Drax.
I vote Steve Buscemi for Rocket Raccoon.
Nathan FIllion as Star Lord
Peter Dinklage as Rocket Raccoon
Andy Serkis as Groot
Rock as Drax
and maybe Eva Mendes as Gamora
Peter Dinklage is great but I feel like Rocket Raccoon needs to be a little more goofy. Peter Dinklage plays drama with situational comedy so well.
Buscemi for Rocket Racoon’s voice and Andy Sirkus for his actions.
As long as Nathan Fillian is involved somehow.
Never heard of the guy before, have yet to see “Super”…
Let’s just say that I’ll go see at the theater when it comes out but can’t say I’m “excited” about it yet…
AWESOME new=Gun is badazz, checkout Super or slither for conformation
I don’t know nothing about the GotG and was previously just waiting for the trailer to determine my interest, but I love Gunn’s stuff, so I am jazzed now.
It’s an interesting choice. I liked Slither well enough. Gunn’s sensibility might be the smart way to go with a property like this. Had I my druthers, I’m not sure who I’d want writing or directing GotG. I’d almost say Moffat because Abnett & Lanning’s take had that Doctor Who blend of comedy and darkness. But that’s more of a niche tone that wouldn’t appeal to the wider audiences they’re after.
Wow, MorrisonCon just got even MORE interesting!
Hometown boy makes good! (He and his brother went to my high school, so I’m going to go ahead and pretend like we’re lifelong friends if this movie is anything.)
I cant wait for August 2012! 😛
When I first heard talk of a Gaurdians movie, I thought, “Why?” With James Gunn at the helm, my thought is now, “When?!”
Troma for life, good news.
omg, actually excited about this.
Lemmy for the voice of GROOT
Craig Ferguson for Rocket
Hoping for Simon Pegg as Rocket.
Definitely my pick as well.
No one real powerful on the team, huh? They need a Quasar or Nova or Adam Warlock to deal with real power-threats. Guns, knives and sharpened sticks will only get them so far. No TP?
