Movie Stills: Iron Man Picture Hits the Web

With the risk of another Joker-ish fiasco, I bring you this.

Click for the big shot.

If this is actually the suit, I’m totally okay with that.

Comments

  1. Yea, I just saw this on Dig, I hate Ironman but this is looking good.

  2. I think this came through Entertainment Weekly, so I think it is reliable. Yeah, I like it a lot. This movie keeps looking better and better.

  3. I somehow think you’ll see this on sale at the toy store before you’ll see it on the big screen…

    But I could be wrong.

  4. I think, for the filmmakers, one of the good things about Iron Man is that there’s no “definitive” suit, so the whiners can really only complain so much.

But I’m shocked at how close this is to what they’re currently using.

  5. I will whine anyway. Why couldn’t the Transformers look like that?

  6. This is from Entertainment Weekly so it should be legit. They also had a picture of Donwey as Tony Stark. It looks like it should be really good. I read that Tony Stark’s alcoholism won’t be addressed until the “possible” sequels though. I think the casting so far for this movie is great. What do you guys think of Paltrow as Pepper Potts?

  7. You can’t even tell it’s got Charlie Chaplin inside.

  8. Spy video of the Iron Man armor on the set.

It comes 47 seconds into the video.

  9. IF that turns out to be the real thing, then I am so positively surprised. Looks fantastic, a nice combo of a couple IM armors.

  10. Wow, I can’t wait to pay money to see this.

  11. Marvel really seems to be making a huge effort with all these movies lately, in contrast to when I was a kid in the 1980’s when DC seemed to dominate the popular culture with Superman and Batman movies, Justice League toys, and cartoons on TV. Back then pretty much the only place to go for Marvel characters was comics (except I suppose for Secret Wars toys).

  12. “I think, for the filmmakers, one of the good things about Iron Man is that there’s no “definitive” suit, so the whiners can really only complain so much.”

That’s a pretty good point. But consider this — I just saw Batman Begins for the 3rd time, and that movie strays from “established comic continuity” all over the place, and I loved it even more the 3rd time I saw it, and everybody pretty much acknowledges that’s a pretty great film, maybe the best superhero movie that’s been made, or at least in the top 3 at least.

AND that movie had costume problems all over the place. On the 3rd viewing, I actually spotted a number of glaring glitches and costume malfunctions, not to mention the fact that his cape keeps inexplicably turning from plain black cloth to the high tech leather whatever wing stuff. And nobody complained because it’s a great script, with a great story, well acted, all under the supevision of a masterful director. Most would be surprised if I mentioned just one really bad particular costume “thing” that is really bad, because it’s one of the best scenes of the movie — everything else just takes your attention away from it so well.

Iron Man could have the coolest armor under the sun, and still be a big turkey. Or not. We’ll see.

“But I’m shocked at how close this is to what they’re currently using.”

I’ll be shocked if this turns out to be the real version. The rule until now has been to keep everything absolutely 100% secret to build expectation. Breaking with this rule would be a pretty big shift, though things have been leaning in that direction…

  13. “They also had a picture of Downey as Tony Stark. It looks like it should be really good. I read that Tony Stark’s alcoholism won’t be addressed until the “possible” sequels though.”

Downey as Stark could be great. The irony is the sequel about Stark’s alchoholism might be delayed because Downey might either be in jail or drug rehab…

  14. “I’ll be shocked if this turns out to be the real version. The rule until now has been to keep everything absolutely 100% secret to build expectation. Breaking with this rule would be a pretty big shift, though things have been leaning in that direction…”

Jon Favreau has actually been really forthcoming with details. He wants to calm the fears of the fanboys.

  15. That is awesome

  16. IF that turns out to be the real thing…

It’s real. It was published in last week’s Entertainment Weekly.

  17. I post recklessly.

  18. Oh, wow.

  19. Also, that looks damn hard to move in or see out of. I just have a hard time picturing any fight scenes with it.

    But standing still its beautiful.

  20. I worry about the casting of Paltrow because usually she’s a box-office jinx. Hopefully she’ll break out of her slump and this will do well.

  21. As long as Tony Stark drinks recklessly throughout the film, I’ll be happy.

  22. I don’t think you’re going to be very happy.

  23. …and I’m sure Downy will be completely sober during all his scenes. After he’s done shooting…who knows….

  24. “I read that Tony Stark’s alcoholism won’t be addressed until the ‘possible’ sequels though.'” Wouldn’t it seem a bit of a waste to have Downey in this role and NOT address the alcoholism in the first movie? There may not BE a sequel (e.g., no one’s clamoring for a Daredevil sequel), and even if there is, Downey may not be around for it— he has a way of getting himself put away.

Anyway, I agree with Wally above– what really matters is the story, the acting, the directing. However, with the actors they have– not just Downey but also Terrence Howard– I’m hopeful. Those are really good actors, and I’m HOPING they wouldn’t have signed on for it unless it was a good script.

  25. Another thing– does anyone think Marvel to some degree undercut this movie by effectively making Tony Stark the villain of Civil War?

In the beginning of Civil War, the creators all said that the two sides would be portrayed in an evenly balanced way. However, it seems clear that this didn’t in fact occur– there was clearly a “good side” (anti-reg) versus the “bad side” (pro-reg, who actually brought in super villains).

In the process, Marvel certainly didn’t create any love among fandom for Iron Man, did they? I suppose hardcore Iron Man fans are still Iron Man fans, but the more casual Marvel readers have to view Iron Man in a more negative light now.

OR, does it just not matter what comic fans think– is the movie aimed at such a much larger audience that it doesn’t matter what the Civil War readers think of Iron Man?

  26. Dudes, that suit is awesome. Slowly but surely, Hollywood is pulling itself out of the “super crappy adaptations of comic characters” thing that they had going for awhile.

I’m officially excited for this movie…and the possible toys.

  27. OR, does it just not matter what comic fans think– is the movie aimed at such a much larger audience that it doesn’t matter what the Civil War readers think of Iron Man?

Yes. If the 300,000 people who read Civil War don’t show up to the movie it won’t make that much of a dent on the box office.

And let’s be honest, very few people are not going to see the movie because of how they feel about Iron Man in the comics today.

  28. Also, that looks damn hard to move in or see out of. I just have a hard time picturing any fight scenes with it.

    Check out the video link.

  29. Looks awesome! I’m really excited for Downy and hope the movie is dark and gritty.

Ok, me, a recent comic reader asks: why couldn’t it look more like the Ultimates suit? I like it. Then again, It will not keep me from enjoying the film but…

  30. Wow that looks great!!! I’m really loking foward to this.
Robert Downey is one of the greates ators of our generation and I think hes a the perfect choice for IM…..

  31. The suit looks effen cool. I just hope the movie doesn’t suck.

  32. I love that they kept the look so true to what Iron Man really looks like. I think the suit looks totally amazing though I can’t say I’m surprised that they pulled it off. My reasons for thinking this?

    1. The Stan Winston Studio designed and built the suit. Anyone familiar with their work knows they can’t be beat for this type of thing.

    2. RoboCop, who has a similar look to Iron Man, also looked amazing and that was 20 years ago.

  33. If Christian Bale wasn’t already Batman, I think he would’ve made the perfect Tony Stark.

  34. I’m not a huge reader of the book, but what ethnicity is Tony Stark. He looks bi-racial, maybe half black, half white. Anyone know?

  35. Paramount is counting on this to be a successful franchise for them so my guess is that they’re doing all they can to make sure it’s legit. With Sony having Spider-man, Fox having Fantastic 4, and Universal having the Hulk (I bet the Ed Norton version’ll be good), not to mention Warner Bros. having Superman, Batman, and any other DC property, Paramount can’t afford to have this not do well.

The suit looks good and I trust Jon Favreau with this project. I kind of like Iron Man better now that he’s a dick, but in reality he always kind of was.

  36. Stark is a Whitey McHonkeyton, as far as I’ve ever know.

And he has the most pliable facial hair of anyone in the world.

  37. I don’t think Civil War is going to wreck the box office prospects. I do wonder whether/how Marvel Editorial will attempt to “rehabilitate” the character in time to get some trades out when the movie’s released. I also wonder how the film impacts the chance of the Hulk ripping his thick, pickled head off and throwing it into the sun. Not that I have a strong opinion in the matter.

  38. I definitely don’t think 300,000 comic readers going or not going to this film will make a difference – for Paramount it really is about getting millions more to see it. But internet buzz is always a big plus (or big minus) on free publicity, so you can’t completely count out the impact of comic fans.

I don’t think the “Tony on the Dark Side” is a problem for Paramount, but it may be for Marvel, if they are want the movie to lead people to buy Iron Man comics (which these days seems like just about any Marvel title).

I think a bigger problem is just the character itself, or lack thereof — the suit, the suit, the suit – what a cool suit. It’s always been about the suit. If there is no actual person you can relate to in the suit, then the suit is empty, and that doesn’t make a movie fun or interesting. Special effects alone and spectacle can only take you so far. This will be the central problem for the movie to overcome. A cool suit will be easy — depicting the guy in the suit and why he does it will be the hard part.

My own problem with Iron Man in CW is not that he’s “good” or “bad” but that he’s just an empty suit with a tremendous lack of character, except for a precious few issues written by Bendis. There are stacks and stacks of issues where he’s just the latest version of the suit, saying the same few cliche lines he says in every other book…and…whatever, I have a hard time caring.

As for Downey, all kidding aside, he’ll be fine, and probably the best for the role. Despite all his substance abuse issues, it is amazing that he keeps turning out movies like clockwork, and turns out pretty good performances just about everytime. He may be in and out of rehab like a revolving door, but that certainly has never stopped him from working consistently.

  39. You know that half of the people who absolutely hate Stark are still going to see Iron Man, anyhow.

  40. Half?

    Every single one will go.

The people who complain the loudest are the ones who always buy the books.
