IDW’s ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS Optioned By Sony Pictures, Michael Bay

No doubt a lot of celebrating going on at IDW this week. Zombies vs. Robots, the brainchild of chief creative officer Chris Ryall and artist Ashely Wood, has been optioned by Sony Pictures. The film is set to be produced by IDW, Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes, and Circle of Confusion. Ink's still drying, but we'll keep an eye out for any ancillary details like directors and actors and all that nonsense as the project heads toward production.

This is all wonderful news for IDW, a publisher once largely considered a stable for licensed comics based on film and television properties. The polarity hasn't reversed entirely, especially with the ongoing Infestation event (a mashup of Star Trek, GI Joe, Transformers, Ghostbusters, and Zombies vs. Robots), but the balance is shifting. More and more original IDW comic franchises like Locke & Key, 30 Days of Night, and now this series, are instead being adapted into other mediums.

While the draw for co-producer Michael Bay and the rest of the Hollywood side of the deal is wholly evident in the title, it's also a really cool premise. Benevolent robots and typically malicious zombies playing capture the flag with the world's last human baby? With the potential for Amazons to show up in the sequel? Sounds like a perfect popcorn flick to me. Here's hoping they also employ Ashley Wood–a bona fide fine artist and art director–to inject the project with his exquisite brand of urban decay

  1. I loved the art in this book, loved the high concept. The comic itself is kinda weird to read and i don’t think i ever finished it. I agree this could be a really fun popcorn movie. I really hope Ashley Wood gets to put  his visual stamp on it.

  2. Wow. Wasn’t expecting that. Nice one!

  3. It will be interesting to see how this gets made. I’d love to see an animated film and see it in Woods style. But I’m sure we’re never going to get that.

  4. It’s not like Michael Bay to make something which captures the cultural zietgiest but is empty

  5. Michael Bay.
It’s going to suck. To bad, too, I lOVE the comics and have them all. Working on getting the trades now so I can pass them along to my friends.
