Keep an Eye Out For ‘Hollywoodland’

Ron and I saw this trailer for Hollywoodland at the opening night of Superman Returns. It looks quite good, but then I really dig true crime stories. Also, it has Diane Lane in it.

For those who don’t know, Hollywoodland is the story of the mysterious death of George Reeves, who played Clark Kent/Superman in The Adventures of Superman from 1952 to 1958.

It’s really too bad that Warner Bros. barred the filmmakers from using the S-shield logo or other images related to the original show.

Two things:

1. Ben Affleck might actually work in this role.
2. I don’t believe for a second George Reeves committed suicide.

Comments

  1. That looks great. Could be awful, but it’s a good trailer.

    True about Affleck as well.

  2. I’m always unsure about Affleck. But he could good.

And no way in hell did Reeves kill himself. I think the buttler did it.

  3. I was actually intrigued by this…but because of the non-use of the classic “S”, I wasn’t sure if what they were previewing was actually THE George Reeves.

The butler? Did he do it in the Library?

  4. This movie wasn’t called “Hollywoodland” the last time I heard about it. Does Warner Bros. have a copyright on “Truth, Justice, and the American Way”?

  5. Hmmm… that wasn’t before our Superman flick. Looks interesting, if nothing else.

Affleck isn’t horrible, he just doesn’t pick good roles. He can’t carry a movie, I think he’s best suited for a supporting role.

  6. This movie wasn’t called “Hollywoodland” the last time I heard about it. Does Warner Bros. have a copyright on “Truth, Justice, and the American Way”?

    Probably.

  7. I saw that trailer and it looked very good. Affleck looks like he found a role that was not attached to a bomb. Nice to see that George Reeves gettin’ a little respect.

  8. As much as I hate to say it, the last issue of Wizard has a great article on the suicide of Jack Cole, the creator of Plastic Man, who also died in the 50s, under less mysterious circumstances than Reeves, but still a bit of a mystery as to why…

the trailer looks great, I can’t wait to see it.

  9. The movie was originally called “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” according to Wikipedia. Also, found this bit of info: “The film’s original title was changed in February 2006 after Warner Bros. Pictures threatened legal action over the use of a well-known slogan associated with their character Superman.” Thought I would clear up one mystery around Reeves.

  10. A few months back Wizard had an article about the mystery of George Reeves’ death. It was actually very well done. I can’t remember what month it came out.

  11. AICN just said that Superman in Hollywoodland will now have the S…

  12. Interesting.

What are they going to do, CGI it in there?

  13. after watching Look! Up in the sky! over the weekend, i’m definately alot more excited for this movie than i was.
the trailer was great, and i definately wanted to see it, but my enthusiasm just skyrocketed.
finally, maybe a role of Ben Affleck’s that doesn’t make me want to trip homeless kids.
the shot of him in the clark kent getup was perfect. i actually rewound the clip to make sure that it WAS Affleck.
looks gritty and engaging. i’m in!

  14. Maybe Affleck could play Superman in a live action Dark Knight Returns?

  15. Maybe not?

  16. I’m just spitballin’ Gimme a break!

  17. Josh, I’ll tell one thing, mister. Now that IFanboy has a myspace page, this is SERIOUS BUSINESS. NO MORE JOSHIN’ AROUND

    yeah, sorry for that

  18. Honestly…no lie:

First time I heard that, ever. Really.

  19. Hey check this out. I used to watch these like 30 years ago.
