Holiday Wish List

It’s clearly the time of year to think about getting some new books on the shelf. Perhaps you’ve got a list of hardcovers you didn’t quite want to pay for. Perhaps you’re looking for a gift for someone who doesn’t normally read comics. Perhaps you need to get something for someone who really loves silver age DC Comics and nothing else.

Where do you turn? We can help! And by “we,” I mean the collective legions of readers and listeners of our loquacity.

What do you want for the holidays? What are you thinking of buying for others? Need a recommendation? Put it the the group!

And, greedy bastards that we are, allow me to remind you that if you’re thinking of buying anything from the Omnipresent Overlord of Shopping, Amazon.com, please get there from here and help us out.

Me? I’m hoping for a shiny new copies of Absolute Dark Knight, The Complete Calvin and Hobbes, and perhaps even some naughty stuff.

If you’re looking for gifts for people, let us know what kind of other stuff they like, and I’m sure we can pick out some suitable comics, even for the most cape-a-phobic of your relations.

Comments

  1. I am hoping for Absolute New Frontier and M.I.5 Volume 3&4 on DVD. I’d like to put Lost Girls on my list, but I don’t want to ask my family to buy me porn. Even literary porn by Alan Moore.

  2. Yeah, I left Lost Girls off the larger list for the same reason. I didn’t want them embarrassed by snarky comic shop counter guys.

I was not aware that MI5 vol 4 was available….

That show made me so happy.

  3. On my list is the Absolute New Frontier, Absolute Sandman Vol. 1, and New X-Men omnibus. I’d like to ask for Lost Girls as well, but won’t for the same reason…

  4. Its not a book I want;

its thats cool “You Can Star in ‘The Amazing Spider-man’ Personalized DVD”!!!!

The perfect gift for superheroes of all ages 🙂

  5. They have all three seasons of Arrested Development on Amazon for 33 bucks.

If you know someone who likes good TV, it’s a steal.

  6. I’m pretty sure that Arrested Development is the greatest television series in the history of moving filmed images…

    No, I’m posititve it is.

  7. And you would be correct.

  8. Oops. Looks like it’s gone up to 55. Still a good deal, but not as much so.

  9. My mistake, volume 4 of M.I. 5 isn’t available yet. I better let my sister know before she goes crazy looking for it. Maybe I’ll put Arrested Development in its place.

  10. I’d like to put Lost Girls on my list, but I don’t want to ask my family to buy me porn.

    Wusses!

  11. I’m pretty sure that Arrested Development is the greatest television series in the history of moving filmed images…

I’m sorry, did you say Twin Peaks was the greatest television series in the history of moving images?

  12. My family’s hates comics, and my fiancee refuses to get me any only on the grounds that she can never find stuff I don’t already have. I recommend Absolute Sandman (maybe the most beautiful book I own), the Invincible Ultimate Collection hardcovers, Powers Definitive Edition Hardcover Vol. 1, New X-Men Omnibus, Alias Omnibus, and in light of this week’s excellent pick, Strangers in Paradise Pocket Edition Volumes 1-5, which will get you nearly all of the series for about $50.

  13. I’d like to put Lost Girls on my list, but I don’t want to ask my family to buy me porn.

I have no such issues. I just spoke to my wife at lunch about it and I think she’s getting it for me.

  14. “I’m sorry, did you say Twin Peaks was the greatest television series in the history of moving images?”

I’m pretty sure he said Seinfeld was the greatest, but I could be wrong – he might have said Battlestar Galactica. Either way I’d be hard pressed to disagree.

On a side note, can someone explain to an html moron such as myself how to bold or italicize test in my posts?

  15. That is, “how to bold or italicize TEXT in my posts?”

  16. hey there
bold is <b> ended by </b>
italic is <i&gt ended by </i>

  17. Thank you
    Thank you
    Thank you

  18. Just make sure that you put the opening and closing tags in after line breaks. It won’t travel across line breaks for some reason (Fred I edited your post to fix it).

  19. the reason dear conor
    and I’m glad you asked

is because the bulletin board software that you use tries to infer formatting(as it should). So it assumes that line breaks are paragraph tags and in most browsers paragraph tags automatically cancel out b and i tags. They are assumed to be closed. It doesn’t really matter until you throw in a multi-para quote or something

  20. yeah i remember something from college
    nice

  21. Fred is correct in his wisdom.

Stay tuned for some news regarding upgrades to iFanboy, but until then please bear with us with our humble home for now.

And I’m pretty sure he said Twin Peaks

  22. I have the exact opposite problem: I know someone for whom Lost Girls would be 100.3% perfect, but I cannot give someone pornography for Christmas. Particularly not an ex-girlfriend. It would not go well in the home.

Arrested Development: cut down in its prime. Twin Peaks: peaked early and kept on a’crawling along. Also might have been a little too avant garde for my pedestrian tastes.

I hope somebody buys me Pride of Baghdad, and I would really, really dearly love one of those “all the [Marvel comic title here] ever printed” DVDs.

  23. I want someone to get me The Five Fists of Science and the Complete Lowlife.

I also just added the first season of SNL to my wishlist.

I’ve gotten 2 people the first ex Machina trade and I’ll probably do that a couple more times this Christmas.

  24. Im going for walking dead trades…But Ill be buying from amazon, but a friend is going to bring them overseas…International shipping & taxes cost a lot. For the price of shipment of one trade, I can get two more….Ill be doing it through Ifanboy, of course….

  25. Well the top of my list isn’t a comic, but a film based on a Manga, surprised even me. But it is Oldboy (the 3 disc set) just an incredible film. All the Invinsible trades, past 1. The Extended King Kong. Star Trek compleate set. And the comics, Absoulute Kingdom Come, Hush, and Watchmen. And the Complete Bone, one Volume Edition. And JLA Morrsion, get my hands on that. ANd finally, SNL season 1, and Animaniacs Vol. 2. Just all kinds of good. And yes Arested Development is amazing, and I need season 2 of Twin Peaks out.

  26. bold
    italic
That has been bugging me for a long time. Thanks Fred.

  27. glad to help

and ron i wasn’t bitching(the humble thing). I actually design internet based software for a living so I get the need to be intuitive and flexible and the line break as a p thing is intuitive so it’s in. it’s fairly standard.

You know what would be cool though – avatars -there I said it

  28. No worries Fred, I do the same…you should hear me rant about sites, especially ours….

as far as what would be cool…stay tuned my brother.

  29. The iFanboys need to make an Amazon wishlist of all the cool stuff I’m sure they’re asking for this Christmas!

I would totaly buy most of what they post.

    Please!!!!!! Do this!!!!!!

  30. Oh, yeah, Amazon.
All of the comic stuff I’m asking for this Christmas is off Amazon:

Wolverine: Enemy of the State Hardcover

Sleeper Vol. 1: Out in the Cold

    Captain America: The Winter Soldier

    Astonishing X-Men Vol. 2: Dangerous

Captain America: The Red Menace Vol. 1

A Gentlemans Game: A Queen and Country Novel

    The X-Men Trilogy

    Superman Returns Special Edition

And I was going to ask for Powers: The Definitive Hardcover Collection…. but I got it for $5.00 at my comic shop today!

  31. No worries Fred, I do the same…you should hear me rant about sites, especially ours….

I’m pretty bad with that too. You think I hate Daniel Way, man get me going about dumb websites

Hey if you guys need any help/extra hands feel free to ask. Love to help however I could.

  32. thanks Fred much appreciated…

  33. At what comics shop did you get the Powers hardcover for $5, and how can I get there?

  34. But it is Oldboy (the 3 disc set) just an incredible film

Good god do I want that, but I already have the movie and the first volume of the manga, are the extras worth it?

I’d like that shiny Invincible HC that they just delayed, or the New X-Men Omnibus.

I’m giving each of my family members a comic gift this year. My sister is getting Scott Pilgram V1, my father is getting The Best of American Splendor V1, and my mother is getting The Art of Sin City.

  35. I put Lost Girls on my Amazon list. Chances are the non-comics reading heathens in my family won’t have a clue as to what it is and won’t look at it before they give it to me.

    Also on my list:

“Arrested Development” (I’m pretty sure that’s what he said)
The Donner edition of Superman 2
“Justice League” and “Justice League Unlimited” DVDs
A BBC Radio CD version of “The Hobbit”

    Yup, it’s official. I’m a geek.

  36. Powers Vol. 2
    Queen & Country, Vol. 2
Captain America: Red Menace, Vol. 1 and 2
Jonah Hex: Face Full of Violence
    Saga of the Swamp Thing
Strangers In Paradise Pocket Books (had this before, but your review solidified it)

and as a recommendation to anyone else, check out Scott McCloud’s new book, Making Comics. I heard him talk at a college over here and didn’t even know it was out, but his books on comics are the most insightful out there and give you a real respect for what they can do. If you haven’t read his first, Understanding Comics, you need to drop whatever you’re doing and get it right the crap now!

  37. good trades besides strangers in paradise for a girl? a girl who isn’t into super heroes, but likes comedy and some action… anything?

  38. Blue Monday by Chynna Clugston
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1929998627/102-0749248-1147353?ie=UTF8&tag=ifanboycom-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=1929998627

Great book about teen romance and relationships with alot of humor and a general positive feeling

  39. Box Office Poison would also be good. Or Tricked.

    Or Fables.

  40. Oooh – or The Waiting Place by Sean McKeever and various artists.

  41. lost girls?

  42. I suggest the “Marshall Law” tpb

  43. What about Bendis’ Fortune and Glory – that’s pretty funny..

  44. Actually, (and F&G is a GREAT recommend) any of Bendis’ early stuff like Jinx or Torso is great stuff for almost anyone who likes crime stories, regardless of gender.

  45. Totally agree, but after I said the Waiting Place, I realized he asked for “comedy and some action”..Jinx and torso aren’t really knee-slappers 🙂

  46. I went more broad. I get excited…

  47. wow thanks a lot guys!

  48. I want Absolute New Frontier.

As for what I’m buying people, I’m trying to show the depth and breadth of the medium by purchasing American Born Chinese, Strangers in Paradise, and Persepolis for some friends. Also, hooked one person on Y already, so I’m going to give them DMZ, which is I think is another solid gateway book.

And for a comic book geek, I’m getting the X-Men Art Adams book, because he loves X-Men and came in during the crappy 90s and has no idea about the great Asgardian Wars stories.

  49. At what comics shop did you get the Powers hardcover for $5, and how can get there?

The Dragon Caves in Chattanooga. But I’m afraid it was the only one. The shop is trying to get rid of their old stock and have all of their GN’s for $5.00, all that’s left now are mostly movie tie-ins and stuff like the Morrison/Millar run with Skrull.

I also got Astro City: The Tarnished Angel!

  50. At the top of my list is Lost Girls. I’ve asked my wife for it and I think she’s actually considering it. On a recent trip to see the family over Thanksgiving, we listened to the Alan Moore interview on FBR. She commented after the interview that she might want to read that. Once she makes a statement like that, I figure it’s not long before it shows up in a box on the doorstep.

The other thing that I would like to find is Whiteout Melt. I read Whiteout recently and was blown away by how good it was.

Also, I think he said Babylon 5 was the greatest show ever.

  51. The New X-Men Omnibus edition – top of my Christmas list.
