Tonight’s episode: “Fight or Flight“!

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there’s a new addition to the cast tonight…

There were birds all around…

… but I never heard them singing…

  1. Excited about issue(episode, whatever) 5 of the new series. Not so much on that girl above. Give me an evil looking Rose MacGowan anyday. 😛
Anyway, all of you Netfick’ers; You can stream all the episodes of the new season from Netflicks. I recently signed up (didn’t know how to say iFanboy sent me, sorry Conor.)and saw that both seasons are availble to stream on your computer and the quality is great. What I am excited most about tonite: Finding out more about Parkman’s dad.

What I am least excited about: Hype of the new character.

  2. I can’t believe I screwed up the spelling of Netflicks. Geeze!

  3. I place my bet on her being Claire’s aunt.

  4. …aaaand my cable’s out.

  5. I recently signed up (didn’t know how to say iFanboy sent me, sorry Conor.)

I’ll expect a check in the mail.

  7. On a related side not Kristen Bell and Hayden Panettiere are going to be at Big Apple Con next month.

  8. oh boy oh boy

  9. Here we go.

  10. For a minute I thought that the graphic that said

    SURESH, PARKMAN, WALKER

    said

    SURESH PARKMAN

And I wondered when they got married. Clearly I need some sugar.

  11. Stop snitching, Taskmasterette!

  12. Yay! Veronica!

  13. I melt when Kristen Bell smiles!

  14. Oooh! She’s got Sith lightning!

  15. SURESH, PARKMAN, WALKER – sounds like a law firm.

  16. I miss Nathan’s beard but the stubble works for his new demeanor.

  17. Peter’s got a girlfriend, Peter’s got a girlfriend…

  18. Just like a big brother to interrupt his little sister’s afternoon delight.

  19. I’d watch more tv if i were her. Bruce Lee!!

  20. I’m likin’ “flying karate kick” girl. She’s got spunk.

  21. No kidding. I’d clean out the Bruce Lee section at the video store.

  22. Taskmasterette’s coworker looks familiar…

    She’s also somewhat nosy. Suspicious.

  23. Nathan is like my new favorite person and we’re only 15 minutes in.

  24. I thought she was the changing girl

  25. “Taskmasterette’s coworker looks familiar…

    She’s also somewhat nosy. Suspicious.”

She’s the non-powered friend that gets killed and drives the hero into crimefighting.

  26. You know what’s great during commercial breaks? Chocolate chip cookies.

  27. He a painful brain?

  28. She’s the non-powered friend that gets killed and drives the hero into crimefighting.

Yes, but what have I seen her in before?? It’s driving me crazy.

  29. He has a painful brain.*

  30. I wonder how much Micah spends on Soul Glow.

  31. Wow, that’s some really not at all convincing green screen.

  32. ooh back story!!!

  33. Matt stepped through a door and into the Black Lodge.

Oooh – it’s like the cave in Empire!

  34. What a dick! No back story. Grr.

  35. So much for the Parkman family reunion. Nothing quite like Daddy-love from a psychic psychotic.

  36. What a dick! No back story. Grr.

  37. Parkman’s dad IS The Nightmare Man! Freaking awesome.

  38. I want more Lightning Lass – where’s Kristen?

  39. So if Taskmasterette can duplicate anything that she see’s how is it can she play something different than soul-glo did. Being able to mimic something doesn’t mean you know how to actually play it just means you can repeat what you saw.

  40. She might not be a straight up mimic, maybe.

  41. Okay, so she is.

  42. “Hey, don’t taze me, bro.”

  43. “They’ve gotta bring Hiro back to the future. Now we’re being told that he and Kensei are having all of the adventures but we’re not seeing them happen.”

Feudal Japan is really expensive to recreate

  44. Yeah… I think what bugs me the most about this show is how the writers never think logically about the “powers”. Whether it would be how the characters hardly ever use reason or how when they do they don’t use them to the extant that they could.
The writers just need to spend time thinking about what and ability would mean.

  45. ok conner,

that scene w/ mica makes me hate him too now.

  46. How lonely is this girl? Because Peter might just have a little too much baggage…

  47. Oh, please let the bad accent be dead.

  48. The cave, Nathan, remember your failure at the cave!

As cellmates go, Parkman could have worse.

  49. awesome i love shadow fights

  50. I think Lightning Lass is going to taze Irish brother’s arse.

  51. No! Not Tobolowsky!

  52. You know, this random Scientist helping Ando is going to have to be killed. He knows too much!

  53. Shit….that’s…a big army.

And they can’t read the rest in the future….figures.

  54. The Bruce Lee story!!!

  55. ha, bruce lee. No shit!!

  56. Credit goes to echeola on the Bruce Lee prediction.

  57. sylar!!

  58. Yay! He’s dead!

  59. “Okay, I killed him. What is the big deal?” She’s the anti-cheerleader, “Sorry, Daddy, it won’t happen again.”

  60. I was just thinking to myself that it would be great if Veronica was talking to Keith and then she said “Daddy”! Sigh. I miss Keith Mars.

  61. She didn’t just kill him, she freakin’ BBQed him. Damn.

  62. Veronica Mars has definitely gone over to the dark side.

  63. Looks lke HRG is getting his edge back next week.

This episode was a mixed bag.

    THE GOOD STUFF:

    – Parkman and Nathan was gold – all of their stuff was great
    – Veronica Mars was great.
    – Peter and the girl was actually pretty good, too.
    – Taskmastette has the potential to be the most badass of all.
    – The Nightmare Man. I love villains who don’t look like villains.

    THE NOT SO GOOD STUFF:

    – Hiro is getting boring.
    – Bad green screen

This show is still basically treading water. I am somewhat confident that this will all lead somewhere interesting and there are enough really good new characters to add to the mix alongside the already established players that I am still really into it, but I fear that others are going to drop off soon if they don’t pick up the pace already.

  64. Good freaken’ episode.

Mika is bothering me more and more.

The irish girl is bothering me.

Kristen Bell is hot as usual.

Good to see Tim Sale’s art.

Who is the dark Dr. Seresh that showed up at the Taskmasterette’s House?

  65. I must say, I love the names “Taskmasterette” and “Lightning Lass” for the characters. Decent episode overall, but where’s Claire?

    Needed way more HRG.

I think the cast is getting too big, Sylar is going to have to clean house.

  66. You heard it here first: ELECTRONICA MARS.

My other new character nickname is, for Peter’s new little Irish lass: Rory Gilmore’s Stunt Double, or RGSD for short.

Yeah, writing for Parkman and Nathan was really good this week. And the nightmare room scene was pretty good, too.

And for those who think the show isn’t as good and/or treading water, beware: Looks like they are going to Quebec.

  67. Who is the dark Dr. Seresh that showed up at the Taskmasterette’s House?

Seemed like regular old Dr. Suresh to me. That’s where Tobolowsky sent him with the taser.

  68. You heard it here first: ELECTRONICA MARS.

    Damn you and your brilliance.

  69. I agree with jestergoblin, the cast is getting too big. It’s hard to keep stories on track and fast moving when there are so many going on at once.

I don’t agree that the show is just treading water, I think it is starting to break out. I think they need to start tying the individual stories together. That’ll make it easer to follow, and you’ll see the characters you like.

btw I told my guys at my comic shop that i post on a board while watching the show, they thought that was pretty nerdy. PEOPLE WORKING IN A COMIC SHOP THOUGHT I WAS NERDY!

    I don’t mind, really I don’t.

  70. This is almost starting to feel like Fables to me. I feel like Hiro should get his own spin-off (Hiro of Heroes/Jack of Fables) to tell the Kensei storyline while the main storyline focuses on the killings.

I guess it just seems weird when characters don’t appear for a few episodes.

  71. Micah needs a haircut…or to be dead. Whichever fits better. Jestergoblin was right, Sylar needs to thin the heard, starting with West, who wasn’t even in this episode but I still can’t stand him.

  72. I just realized – I like the odd numbered episodes way better than the even numbered ones – it’s like bizarro Star Trek movies

  73. This was an amazing episode, save for the Irish girl.

Terrible accent and she reacts much faster than a person physically could. Also, is it known worldwide that Montreal is a french speaking Canadian city? Thhat quick conclusion is bugging the hell out of me, for no apparent reason.

    Kristen Bell, marry me.

  74. Terrible accent…

At least she’s English. Her accent’s not as bad as her brother’s.

Also, is it known worldwide that Montreal is a french speaking Canadian city? Thhat quick conclusion is bugging the hell out of me, for no apparent reason.

I would think so. Why wouldn’t it be?

  75. One positive for the Irish girl is that Peter’s getting some lovin’. And poor Peter needs some after last season.

  76. Prediction: Monica aka Taskmasterette dies in a few episodes. Aside from Hiro, Sylar, and Peter, she might be the most threatning of all of the new cast members. Maya’s brother can stop her abilities and bring people back. Taskmasterette can go to Blockbuster video, rent the enire martial arts section, and do what ever the hell she wanted. And she’s becoming very aware of her powers faster than any other cast member. I really like her, but I have a bad feeling about whats in store for her.

  77. I think Monica’s in for the long haul. She was added this season to have another character who actually gets a thrill out of her powers like Hiro did. I’m also thinking the comic book cover is as prescient as the other comics.

You’re all to hard on Micah.

  78. KRISTEN BELL HAS SUPER POWERS!!

Or so they’d like you to believe:

Everyone got to talking, and Joe and Aron said

  79. Good stuff… 2 weeks in a row. Blimey!

Conor, for once Grumpy agreed with everything you said about this episode. All the good stuff you listed was indeed awesome, and the bad stuff was pretty bad (I’d add Micah to the bad list though, and the Oirish lass bothers me some – it’s a lame Irish accent even for a Brit actress).

I also agree the series is up and down, but getting more good than bad, and picking up momentum nicely. Who knew 3 episodes ago Nathan and Parkman would turn into the best characters in the show?

“ELECTRONICA MARS”? Aaron Scott, I humbly bow to your genius! Bravo, sir!

  80. Man, I don’t want to be the asshole here, but what makes you guys such masters of the Irish accent? I mean it’s not like they sound like the Lucky Charms guy. At least the sister, and the turncoat are English and so theoretically know Irish accents better than we do. And the Roasted Oirishman did attend school in Ireland, so he must have been there for awhile. All I’m saying is that maybe they’re a little over done, but it’s not as bad as you guys are making out.

  81. And holy-crap that Veronica Mars girl is attractive.

I have no problem with the girl’s accent, but there is no denying that the brother’s accent was way overdone.

  83. Fair enough. Of the few Irish people I’ve known only a couple have had the stereotypical accent, and only one had anything approaching his. I’m just saying that it’s probably not worth getting all up in arms about the way some people are. That said it’s a moot point now. That dude is one overdone teriyaki stick.

I know I should just read some of the other forums, but I can’t quite bring myself to bother. Am I the only one who absolutely hates the storyline of the border-running-wonder-twins? I sigh with discontent every time they come on screen. It’s just the same ol’ shit every time with them.

  84. Fair enough. Of the few Irish people I’ve known only a couple have had the stereotypical accent, and only one had anything approaching his. I’m just saying that it’s probably not worth getting all up in arms about the way some people are. That said it’s a moot point now.

My biggest problem with it was that they could have just as easily have gotten an authentic Irish actor for the part. It’s not like they are scarce. But like you said, it’s moot now.

It’s just the same ol’ shit every time with them.

That’s why I think the show is treading too much water at times – The Wonder Twins & Sylar, Claire, Hiro, all of their storylines have shown very little in the way of forward progression.

  85. Even though there are more characters the writers are working toward fewer storylines by characters teaming up and by ignoring characters completely in some episodes. I certainly appreciated the break from the Wonder Twins. But at least when we see them again they’ll be teamed with Sylar. I assume we’ll get a big Hiro dose next week. That’s a storyline I’d like to get big chunks of at once although truthfully I’d rather he come back to present day.

  86. This was my favorite episode of the season– actually, the first this season that I thoroughly enjoyed.
There was no Sylar, no twins.
There was plenty of Echo– er, I mean, Monica.
There was the cool, Emma Frost-inspired fight between Nathan and Parkman.
And, perhaps best of all, we got rid of the Irish guy. Now, if we can have Peter leave the sister, maybe we can get HIS story moving along.

  87. Oh, and no creepy teenage stalker-guy. And did I mention, no twins?

  88. I still like the twins, but I seem to be in the minority there. I dunno, i think it’s an interesting idea (although one I’m sure has been done before, feel free to call me on it if it has), and I have a feeling there gonna come into major play later in the season.

But nonetheless, a great episode. On the basis of the last 2 weeks, I stand corrected on my early harshness of the series.

  89. I don’t necessarily think that the Border-Running-Wonder-Twins idea is bad, it’s just that it needs to go somewhere. My perception (which admittedly is probably wrong) is that every single time we see them all we get is them getting separated, the girl freaking out, people dying, and the brother absorbing the “funk” and everybody coming back to life. Every single time, it’s just the same thing over and over. Their story line just needs to be advanced more quickly and then it’s possible that they become interesting.

  90. “Every single time, it’s just the same thing over and over. Their story line just needs to be advanced more quickly and then it’s possible that they become interesting.”

100% agree, and there is the problem many of noticed about the show in general. I love a show with an ensemble cast tremendously, but that usually means at least half the characters (or usually more) are in the same place here or there for most of the show, and the others are in one place here or there together as well, with main characters navigatinig the two groups to move the plot forward.

But so far, everyone in this show is scattered all over the place, and, as noted by others, the plot progression is way slow. Oirish brother getting BBQed is like –Ok, so why was he in the show so much, only to get killed by Episode 5? I don’t feel much connection to either him or his sister to care much – but Kristen Bell was pretty hot – Electronica Mars – That’s good.

I love Ron’s comment about even numbered episodes and odd numbered episodes, I thought the same thing mysellf – its like they have so many characters to juggle, they’ve resorted to “tag team storylines.”

“This week we had these characters, so next week we have to have the others and not the ones we had this week.” I don’t know what’s up – they want “an epic story on a broad canvas,” or they figure different characters appeal to different people, so keep everyone to not alientate the viewers the characters that others like? Who knows.

But it does seem that the various and sundry, all over the map characters and plotlines are coming together finally. Peter finally getting his butt in gear and the wonderful scene with Nathan and Parkman being “brain whacked” was great stuff.

All in all, the show has pretty good writing, pretty good directing, and pretty good acting. They just need to (again) figure out which storyline to build on and move forward rather than meander around with alot of underdeveloped ones.

And yeah, that green screen in Russia was pretty bad….almost looked like they were walking on treadmills….

  91. I dug that. Though we have approached the halfway point of this arc now, right? Chop chop, fellows.

I like that some characters vanish for an episode, personally. We used to watch Star Trek in the dorms and joke about how every actor would be shoehorned into every episode, even if nothing that was happening had anything to do with them.

“Worf, what brings you down to engineering?”

“I’m just here to pick up my check.”

Heroes has 47 people in the cast; if you don’t like the weather, just wait ten minutes, as we say here in the Gateway City.

Uhhhhgghhh, feudal Japan. Leading the board of Top Ten Things I Did Not Sign On For.

  92. This show is boring me to tears.

And, for the record, I think I’m a bit of an expert on accents, with Irish being one I pay particular attention to. At the least I’m an amateur accent enthusiast. Her accent wasn’t so bad, but her voice coupled with it is a bit grating. Also, if they grew up in the same place, they’d have the same accent, and they didn’t. They had completely different accents. Ireland’s a small country, but there are tons of variations on the accent, and Cork and southwest Ireland have an accent that’s totally different from Dublin, or Connacht, or Northern Ireland. She actually sounds a bit like she’s from the north. For an example of the northern accent, listen to Garth Ennis from our video show. Granted, he’s been in the US a while, and that will change it a bit, but you’ll get the point.

There’s also a surplus of bad, cliched, over-acted lines, especially in this episode. I kept thinking, “how can you write that with any self-respect?” and, “how can you act that line?” But that might just be me being picky. (It is!). I think the show is getting more tongue-in-cheek than is my taste. I really haven’t enjoyed this season much at all. Am I alone in this?

  93. There’s also a surplus of bad, cliched, over-acted lines, especially in this episode. I think the show is getting more tongue-in-cheek than is my taste. I really haven’t enjoyed this season much at all. Am I alone in this?

Not totally alone. Although I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m bored to tears. I’m actually somewhat enjoying it. However, here’s what I’ve noticed…I get more excited for the “Next week” blurbs at the end of the show than any particular scene within.

What I think that means is that I’m engaged enough with the stories to be continually curious about what happens next, even as each individual scene has certain cliches and melodrama that I’m not as fond of.

All that said, I’m still enjoying the show overall, but more on a “serial” addiction level than actually being captivated by the writing of the individual scenes and threads.

  94. However, here’s what I’ve noticed…I get more excited for the “Next week” blurbs at the end of the show than any particular scene within.

Oh yes! Didn’t next week look awesome!? Yeah, but that’s every interesting thing from the whole hour, packed into 9 seconds. There hasn’t really been a payoff on any of this stuff yet.

  95. “There’s also a surplus of bad, cliched, over-acted lines, especially in this episode.”

I’m trying to keep an open mind for old times’ sake, but when Electronica Mars was talking to Daddy on the phone I was saying her lines before she did.

  96. Three weeks ago I’d have agreed with you 100%, Josh, but I feel it has been getting better. Not perfect, by any means, or as good as the first season, but closer to the show I loved.

It’s possible that my expectations have been lowered week after week by a poor opening, or maybe I’m convincing myself out of loyalty to like it, but on the whole I honestly have enjoyed it loads more this last couple of weeks. If they keep up the level of that Parkman/Suresh scene then I’m hooked. Probably won’t happen, but I’m keeping that grump upside-down for now.

An “accent enthusiast”, Josh? On a side-note, what’s the best accent anyone’s heard an actor do in a role that wasn’t their natural accent (regardless of nationality of the actor)?

  97. OT but related. I’ve mostly given up on Bionic Woman but I saw most of it last night. The show is having trouble finding its feet. It has all sorts of great elements but can’t pick a direction. But mostly I feel the lead doesn’t have screen charisma. Last night there was a silly story conceit that let her play the bulk of the episode in her (naturual) English accent. Suddenly, she was alive and had a little spark. Seems like trying to maintain an accent short circuits her natural acting.

  98. An “accent enthusiast”, Josh? On a side-note, what’s the best accent anyone’s heard an actor do in a role that wasn’t their natural accent (regardless of nationality of the actor)?

I was always really impressed by Brad Pitt’s accent in Snatch. He was a little cartoony, but it certainly didn’t sound like him. I can’t say the same for him in The Devil’s Own. Ugh.

Gary Oldman is a guy who can do any accent and do it really well. Right off the top of my head, I can’t think of what his accent is until I remember he’s British. He’s amazing. From Jim Gordon, to The Professional, to True Romance, that guy can do anything.

There are lots of worsts, but notables include Don Cheadle in Oceans 11, Tim Roth in Reservoir Dogs, and any time Ewan McGregor tries an American accent.

  99. Tad, I thought the EXACT same thing about Bionic Woman. I’ve been sticking with it, but has been a bit of a let-down. It has moments, but not enough. I think Michelle Ryan’s US accent was ok, but yeah she suddenly seemed engaging when she was speaking naturally.

Josh, I agree about Brad in Snatch (such a dodgy sentence, I apologise). Gary’s a given, the man can play anything. For Americans playing Brits how about David Anders in ‘Alias’ (I’m not counting his role in Heroes as he’s ripping off Johnny Depp), or James Marsters in ‘Buffy’? On the reverse side of convincing US accents, Rose Byrne’s also pretty good in Damages, as is Hugh Laurie in ‘House’?

Sorry, I know this is totally off-topic now, I just thought it interesting as the accent thing has been such a big part of Heroes so far, but please disregard if not.

  100. “what’s the best accent anyone’s heard an actor do in a role that wasn’t their natural accent (regardless of nationality of the actor)?”

As a non-Brit, I don’t feel comfortable judging British accents, but I think Minnie Driver and High Laurie have just about the best American accents I’ve heard. Never heard ’em slip. In contrast, I think Patrick Stewart would sound like the King of England even if he were trying to play Will Hunting.

  101. I think the irish excursion in Heroes and all the chatter it’s sparked on these threads is really symptomatic of what’s really wrong (i.e., the Story), and why people are reacting negatively. There seems to be no relation to the main plot, and the character development is just not there – whether it’s Peter, the girl, or the now BBQed brother. People feel like its just wasting time in the show, and the accents pop up as the most obvious thing to latch on to and complain about, because that’s the most substance (such as it is) that this whole “Peter’s trip to Ireland” has. People comparing it to the Bionic woman is natural, as that is also a show having trouble finding a backbone of a story.

The Irish accent thing doesn’t bother me, because for the past year I’ve been hearing Ando speak Japanese the way Gov. Arnold of California speaks English (yes, that bad). James Kyson Lee has a very obvious Korean accent, although I think he is a very good actor. Of course most people don’t notice because most viewers obviously don’t speak Japanese (unless they want to sell the show here, where American TV shows are actually becoming a pretty big part of the DVD market, finally).

HOWEVER, the character dynamic between Hiro and Ando won me over. Stoic Ando and Puppy Dog Hiro has now gone full cirlce and it seems now its a bit more like Puppy Dog Ando and Stoic Hiro. So, I really don’t mind. If people felt the same about Peter’s excursion to Ireland (relevance to the plot, good character development), they probably wouldn’t care at all about “OiPods.”

Just for fun, here is some other funny nitpicks:

    1) Japanese Scientist reads 400 year old scrolls, and is not shocked they are written in contemporary Japanese. Imagine finding a parchment from Shakespearean England, and not being surprised it’s written in 20-21st century English? Japanese are forced to study far more Classical Japanese in their Jr. High and High Schools as part of the standard curriculum for about 6 years (the way we have to read at least one Shakespeare play a year, but more), so just about anybody Japanese would notice.

BUT, when the guy notices the scroll is addressed to “Ando,” and Ando gets all flushed and says, “Oh, well, you know, Ando is a very common name….” (it actually is, even 400 years ago), that was enough of a “wink and a nod” for me to not care about this particular sand pit of a story hole. “yes, we know its all a bit ridiculous, but you know that too, just having fun here” is what the writer was saying, I think.

My problem with Hiro now is like Peter in Ireland. What has this got to do with anything, why are we here, is this going anywhere, will there be a payoff, do we have to wait until the absolute end of the season to have any clue…? That’s what bothers me.

The accents are just symptoms of a bigger problem, ne?

  102. Just to be clear, the accent thing is a fun nitpick for me. It doesn’t affect whether or not I like the show overall. I’m not that touchy. The fact that I’m bored and rolling my eyes constantly though, that does.

Interesting about Ando’s accent. I’ve always wondered that.

  103. I think I’m in the minority in that I’m actually enjoying this season but there is a story dip just like any superhero book, the Origin arc of a story is very hard to follow.
I’m enjoying Hiro in feudal Japan where he seems to be honing his skills (too bad we don’t get to see him fight too often, I hope there is an upcoming episode with him fighting side by side with Kensei).
Parkman seems to be the team up guy. I loved the Nathan vs. Matt fight set up by Matt’s father.
“THE TWELVE” story bits are always highlights for me (although I wanted to see Hiro’s father’s power).
I don’t mind the Irish branching but it is getting excessive play time.
The accents don’t bother me as it goes with TV territory as do stereotypes which are played up in most media including this series.
Monica is my new favourite storyline branch (plus we get to see another Original Star Trek actor – Nichelle Nichols).

I have to agree with Josh when he says he is an “accent enthusiast”, he has done excellent accents from the UK and Ireland on the shows and he really nails them better than most American TV.

  104. Good accent: the blonde agent on “Chuck” is Australian, but I think she covers it over well.

The Bionic Woman–why does she walk so funny. She has a weird bounce to her walk. She covers the Brit up well though.

Also, hailing from the SE US, Black Echo’s accent is not at all a true New Orleans accent, nor much of a Southern accent, though I like her character a whole lot.

  105. Granted, I’ve never seen Veronica Mars, but I thought that her acting was pretty poor. Although, that could be a result of extremely crappy lines.

  106. Also, Forest Whitacker does a great cockney accent. Even Michael Caine says so!

  107. OT but related. I’ve mostly given up on Bionic Woman but I saw most of it last night. The show is having trouble finding its feet. It has all sorts of great elements but can’t pick a direction.

I know it’s OT, but…you TOTALLY hit the nail on the head, Tad! Each episode of Bionic Woman seems like it’s pulling the concept in a different direction. There was one a couple of weeks back that David Eick wrote, and it had a bit of that dark, Battlestar Galactica quality to it, but it’s been incredibly inconsistent from week to week.

  108. Granted, I’ve never seen Veronica Mars, but I thought that her acting was pretty poor. Although, that could be a result of extremely crappy lines.

    You take that back! 😛
